Tootal, I probably had the most fun on that rigid frame mini bike! I rode the thing until the oil was like tar and then an older friend of the family flushed it out with kerosene, we dumped in new oil and back to doing laps. |

Mini bikes were a great training ground. I learned all about #35 chains and master links and half links and shortening chains and lubrication and the effect of universally sandy dirt roads. Also throttle cables, oil changes, cleaning foam air filters, etc., etc. Also, learned the value of suspensions after jumping off of a plywood ramp nailed to a stump in my parent's yard (landings were rough!). |

My brother and I learned to ride on this "contraption" as my Great Grandfather used to call it! It didn't have a throttle like a motorcycle, it just had the lawnmower lever attached to the frame. The first time I rode it, it took off and I was too afraid to let go of the handlebars and shut it down and ran into a tree! That stopped it! The brake was a right foot lever linked to a metal flap that would rub the rear tire. Once I got good on it I just rode it left handed and worked the lever with the right. To this day when riding my Harley I can ride one handed with my left a lot longer than my right! We were riding along some railroad tracks over those big rocks and the frame snapped off at the goose neck sending me into a beautiful face plant! End of story and minibike. |

Remember how useless those rear wheel "scrub" brakes were if the tire got wet? |

or MUDDY!? Remember the Rupp minibikes with the front suspension? A friend had one and he rode it over a jump and the whole lower fork legs fell out while airborn! You guessed it, FACE PLANT!
