I've been catching news about Puerto Rico and the devastation there, unbelievable. My sous chef has family there. My SO once lived there. What's your take on that mess? Related topic- Alaska has, over time, developed "micro-grid" energy structures. Very interesting, looks to be a very efficient way of life. I live in the TVA system, always have, grown to love the lakes, rivers, and good/bad history of the whole thing. My next door neighbors growing up built a 3 story log cabin with old wood salvaged from the areas that would be sacrificed for Percy Priest lake, before they flooded it... visiting them is like stepping into a magazine and walking around, looking at beauty in all its forms. Praying and wishing the best for PR. |

I'm not going . . but lots of folks are. Current "bounty" is a $250K bonus for 6 months of work. Only contact I've had was "can you design and assembled 1,000 micro-grid generator systems". I'm buried in the midst of a $2B project with a private developer on a 1,077MW plant and all the miles of overhead 345kV lines. . . . Im buried for the next 3 years. But . . this was in the NY Times today . . . https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/24/us/from-montana -to-puerto-rico-a-small-firm-strikes-a-powerful-de al.html?emc=eta1 Plenty of opportunity. But, like Katrina, you will need to go well armed and ready to provide for your own security and defense. |

Thanks. We take it for granted, having power, hot and cold water, even insulation, as I watch the winds blow... I do wish we had more of a national conservation mindset. As far as resources, energy consumption, and efficiencies go, we really should be more mindful- Al Gore or not. Saw in the news that China has shut down entire manufacturing regions to manage, reduce, or force compliance for pollution control. Hey, it's almost Halloween- maybe somebody could re-animate Nikola Tesla and put him back to work. |

Apparently their power system was in very poor condition well before the hurricane. There is only one power “company”, the government owned Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA). The vast majority of power was produced by diesel generators and all the fuel had to be shipped in. PREPA had been operating in the red for years. A few years ago, our office worked with an Army Reserve command which has facilities there at the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. At one point, someone actually stole the power transmission lines onto the base, and they were forced to get by with standby generators for something like 3 months. Their power, purchased from PREPA, was so unreliable they started a project to install their own generating station suppling their ~10 buildings so they could be self sufficient. The project died apparently because the man in charge attempted to circumvent some regulations to get the generator project done, but that gives you some idea of how things were before the recent devastation. |

Wow- thanks again, Hugh. Apparently PREPA is SNAFU'd and FUBAR. No one gets to choose their parents, or where they're from. I was lucky, born and raised here in TN. Somehow I'm quite happy at my place on the globe. Latitude, Longitude, and attitude are all cool here. Watching the seasonal weather though... Gatlinburg still isn't quite back from the firestorms yet. |
