For those who have the dvd of the recent film: Break it in half, then burn it. Then forget you ever saw it. Read the books. Possibly watch the BBC version. Whatever you do, do not let a Vogon read poetry at you.

The film version at least has Alan Rickman, as the voice of the 'bot. That makes up for a lot.

But I do agree the BBC versions ( 2? ) are better, even with the near zero budget.

And the books best of all.

My earnest recommendation to anyone when a movie comes "based on" a book you haven't read, is to see the movie first, then read the book. That way you won't be disappointed so much. I think It made Watchmen better to experience in that order. I wasn't unhappy with plot changes I didn't know about, and generally, actually think improved the story, but I might not feel that way if I'd read it first.

I do occasionally suggest reading the novel beforehand. Dune, for example, has a weirdly complex universe and might be better after reading.

Starship Troopers, is another, as the movie was directed by a guy who hated the source material. And I doubt ever actually read it. It's as if it was made by listening to a verbal description of the book by someone who didn't like it and resented the job. Don't bother with the sequels. just.... don't.
