Windshields My Roadster has a detachable windshield. Actually, it has two. The large one that came with the bike and was on it when I lowsided last winter, and a smaller shield that was given to me by a very generous member of the XL Forum. Right now, it’s wearing neither. Around town, which is where I’m doing nearly all my riding at the present, I prefer the cooling effect of the wind. Summer in Cincinnati means hot and humid. On the road though, a windshield is a blessing. That’s the beauty of having an easily detachable accessory. I didn’t always like windshields; in fact, I thought they were the antithesis of what a motorcycle should be about. It was a view that was shared by my buddies back in the early ‘70s. Full Dress Harleys were to be sneered at. We called them Garbage Wagons. We were minimalists. No stinking’ saddlebags or bug catchers for us. We were genuine bikers. Or somethin’. It took time, but gradually, I began to see the appeal in hard, waterproof saddlebags. It was pretty nice to ride through a heavy rain and still have my change of underwear and my tool kit dry. Then I bought an FLHS in 1988. It came with a Windshield and saddlebags. I was getting it because my wife at the time took one look at the comfy passenger seat and “suggested” that she’d be happier on it than on the lightly upholstered board that I had on the XLH. I knew that as soon as I could, I was going to remove the windshield. I picked the bike up on a Friday evening. I rode my Sportster out to the dealership in a heavy mist. When I left the dealership on the FLHS, the mist has increased to a steady rain. The 50 mile ride home in the rain was much more pleasant than the ride out in the mist had been. Needless to say, I never took the windshield off. However, while windshields can be nice, they do remove a bit of the sensation of riding. Feeling the wind on my body as I cruise along is part of the experience. Back in 1972, My wife and I were renting a large apartment. The bedroom was enormous, and Sue was building a 1958 R-26 BMW in it. (I was building a 1953 Triumph 6T in the spare bedroom) One day, Sue needed some parts from a dealership north of Boston, so Bill carried her there on his 72 Superglide. BMW riders were every bit as snobby then as they are now, and the few that were hanging around looked down their noses at Bill’s bike. Sue got her parts and as she and Bill were getting ready to leave, one of the guys who had a fairing and bags on his bike and was looking at Bill’s bike said, “You should put a windshield on it”. Bill replied, “If I wanted a windshield, I would have bought a car.” Sometimes today, I still feel that way. | ||

When riding my FLHS I like wearing my shorty helmet, like a cop helmet, not a novelty one. A pair a shades and I'm good on a hot day. One day I figured I'd take the windshield off since it was so hot and take a ride. I got up to 45 mph hour and the wind was catching my helmet and forcing my head back, my glasses were bouncing on my nose! I made a U turn and went home and put my windshield back on! I've never taken it off since! I guess I need a leather aviator cap and some goggles to ride without it! | ||

Missing Snippets There are a number of things I haven’t mentioned in one of these little essays that I think are important. I’ve talked about them with a number of people, but I’ve never written about them and I think I should. First, the big one. When I arrived here with the U-Haul truck full of my chit, there was a card waiting for me in my accumulated mail. It was signed and dated by Erik Buell, but a little Post-it said that it was from all my friends at Badweb. That was a real mind blower. I couldn’t make it to Homecoming, so the folks that were there sent a bit of Homecoming to me. I was completely overwhelmed. David was also amazed and that was only amplified by the fact that Ourdee drove down from Indianapolis to help me unload the truck. He can’t believe the amount of help that Badweb has given me. I’ve told him that Badweb is full of exceptional people; he not only believes it, but he also finds it to be unheard of behavior from any of the forums he’s ever been involved with. I’m just floored that I got a card from one of my heroes. And people wonder why I’m fanatically supportive of both Buell and EBR motorcycles. I’ve found the doctors I needed to find, and they’re all in the same location. I called Christ Hospital, and they lined me up with a Cardiologist, Urologist and a Primary Care Physician ay a location just a couple of miles from my house. I called all three and I now have appointments on the 12th, 13th and 18th of this month. I still have to change my Driver’s License and Registration for the Roadster over to Ohio, but I’ll get to it. Maybe later this week. I didn’t get everything unpacked by Sunday night like I’d hoped, but I got pretty flipping’ close.The Living room looks like a sparsely furnished living room, but it isn’t full of boxes and neither is the dining room. There’s one and a half plastic bins to go, then everything upstairs will be unpacked. However; all the stuff in the basement is still waiting. That’s going to take a while. I’m getting a running lawn mower from a friend of David’s. Damnut gave me one in Massachusetts, but it needs a bit of attention before I could use it to cut the grass. Perry used his yesterday to cut his grass, and he says it’s running fine. He has a better one that he’s keeping, so I’m going to be the lucky benefactor. I’ll keep the mower that Jim gave me as a project. Theree’s plenty of room for it in the shed out back. My brother David saw signs for a 4 day motorcycle rally in Newport, Kentucky, so I went over there today. It’s a nice location for something like a rally; it’s right on the Ohio River. I found the rally site, but there was nobody there. A lot of awnings for various food , beer and other vendors, but nobody manning them and no bikers. I don’t know just what the deal is, but it sure looks like somebody dropped the ball. It’s a shame, but it gave me someplace to ride to. I haven’t gone anywhere on the bike since I moved down here and it felt pretty good to put a few miles on. Not enough miles, but more than what it takes to go to the supermarket or Home Depot. I’m not sure what I’m going to do for the Fourth. Maybe I’ll take a ride along the River for a few hours. Twisty roads with lots of elevation changes; not a bad way to spend a few hours. Happy 241st, USA! Today’s July 4th. Everybody is celebrating. Fireworks are legal here and both neighbors on either side of me were lighting off all kinds of loud and colorful items, from roman candles to big, high flying rockets. I’m quite sure that all the Emergency rooms in the area were quite busy treating burns and all kinds of related injuries on people who weren’t quite as careful as they should have been. As far as my celebrations went, all I did was put a U.S. flag out front. I thought about buying some fireworks, but my inner cheapskate rebelled at the prices. I bet that tomorrow, the prices will drop significantly. I had planned to go for a nice ride today, but when I got up this morning, I realized that I needed to clean the oven first so I could broil a steak for dinner. I got that done, then had a couple of errands to run. Then I got a text asking if Perry could drop off the mower and extension ladder… By the time I got done with everything, I only had a couple of hours left for a ride. So I rode over to the Anderson Ferry and crossed the River into Kentucky. I rode along the river, eventually crossing back to Cincinnati on the Robeling Bridge. I could be wrong, but I think that Robeling built the bridge here before he built the Brooklyn Bridge. The only bad part is the deck of the bridge is a steel grid; the kind that makes the bike feel that all the wheel bearings took a dump at the same time. Still, it was pretty neat. I liked it so much that I crossed back into Kentucky over the same bridge. Tomorrow, I get Internet at the house. I’ll probably post this Snippet and the one I wrote last night from the house. One thing I did today while waiting for Perry to come by was I started spackling all the holes and cracks in the walls. I’ll have to go over some of the patched holes a second time before I sand them down, but things are progressing. I’m doing what I can to make me feel at home. It’s going to take some time, however. I’m not at all familiar with this part of the country. I’ve felt this way before; when I moved to Colorado Springs, back in the ‘70s or when I bought the house in Leominster in ’01, I felt equally displaced, but as I got familiar with the surrounding area, each place felt like home, eventually. Maybe I should go for a ride tomorrow, after the installer gets done giving me Internet. We’ll see. | ||

Apparently they've got some neat new attractions, and there's a giant ferris wheel close by to boot. Have a friend who used to be a performer there, a buddy who used to run sound equipment there too. | ||

Well Crusty, I just looked at Google Maps and if I catch highway 50 I can get to the Cincinnati area and then on to your house in 6 hours 37 minutes. It's 5 hours on the interstate but I like 50. I rode it to the West Virginia Buell Rally one year. Just wanted to check in case I can sneak away for a few days! | ||

Meanwhile, I Was Still Thinkin’… The other day, I was sitting on the throne reading Rider magazine which had an article on the Yamaha FZ-10. They raved about how great it was as a Sport-Tourer. It made horsepower and handled. They put a trunk and soft saddlebags on it. They loved the upright seating position. The weak point was the fuel mileage. It only averaged 33.5 MPG. That got me thinking about the Black Lightning again. I remember when I took out the 1190 SX in 2014, I was getting fuel mileage in the fifty plus range while blitzing backroads in western Massachusetts. (The leader of that extended demo ride was riding in a spirited manner). The FZ makes 137 HP, and the SX makes 146. The author loved the handling of the FZ; I can’t comment on that, but I do know that I’ve never ridden a motorcycle that fit me better than a Buell. I had been riding a Moto Guzzi Norge when I did the SX Demo ride, and the difference in handling was extreme. Last Spring, Froggy let me take his SX out while we were both in Suches for Glitch Badness. I never got above third gear, and I could have done the whole stretch of Hwy 60 in first. All my reflexes were geared toward the Roadster and not the EBR. I was braking way too early in every turn and I wasn’t revving the engine enough to get into the meat of the power band. Still, it was one hell of a ride. Last night, I read a comparison of the H-D Street Rod (a bike that appeals to me for some strange reason) and the Yamaha FZ-07. The XG got beaten by the FZ, but not by much. Then I looked at the price. As tested, the Street Rod cost $9,744.00. I went over to Cycle Trader, and Action Motorsports in Waukesha, WI has a few 2017 1190 SX models in stock for $8,495.00. That’s an Incredible bike for peanuts! Yes; I’d still have to make some changes, but no matter what bike I buy, I’d have to make changes. Right now, I’m so broke I can’t afford to get one. Buying the house and moving has squeezed me dry. But my mind is racing. If they still have one in a couple of months, then maybe I could swing a loan. I’d have to make it through another winter without a car, but that should be a little easier here in Cincinnati than in Massachusetts. I’d also have to cut down the amount I’m throwing at the credit card, but I’d still be bringing that down, just not as fast as I had hoped. I also have to ask what am I going to have to sacrifice. Do I really want to put off buying a decent bed or getting a dresser? What about the carpet? Am I willing to live with that electric stove, or will I give in to my hatred of electric stoves and buy a gas stove? Some things I can get by with cheaply, I don’t care if my dining room chairs match, or if the decor is funny. I will be buying paint; I hate that flipping’ pink. But paint won’t cost that much and it’s a one time expense. New Blinds are $4.50 each (I priced them at Home Depot) I have a bunch of curtains/drapes; probably not enough, but do I really need them? I’m set for cooking utensils and other kitchen tools. How much are gas, electric and water going to run? I got my first gas & electric bill, and it was cheap, but I wasn’t here for a couple of weeks, so I don’t know how high it’s going to be now that I’m living here full time. Well; I have to give this a lot of thought, and I have to see just how much my monthly expenses run. I might still be the first person to ride an EBR to the Arctic Ocean! That would be pretty sweet in my mind. | ||

Rabbit Hash I’ve been wanting to get out and go for a ride for a while now, but every time I try, there’s something I need to do for the house. Last week, I tried and I only made it over the river into Kentucky for a short ways. Other times, I was busy enough that I couldn’t take the time without feeling that I was slacking. I had told myself that I was going to get away for a full day today, and I meant it. However, this morning, I had to empty the last couple of plastic tubs and put all the shit inside them away. Some of the stuff was clothes, which, on top of my dirty laundry, filled my laundry bag; so I decided to hit the laundromat first. By the time I got back and put the clothes away, it was well into the afternoon. I considered blowing off the ride until tomorrow morning, but then I just said, “NO! I’M GOING!” So I did. Now, last month, when the second guy from Duke Energy came by to turn on my gas, he was telling me about a neat little town in Kentucky called Rabbit Hash. He said that the roads in the area were beautiful and that on any given weekend, thousands of bikes would go past his house, which was in the vicinity. Last night, I looked it up on Google maps and it was right on the river, so I did a quick inventory of route numbers. Today, I went out in search of Rabbit Hash. I went over to the Anderson Ferry and took it across the river, then took all back roads. The Gas Tech was right about the roads; they were wonderful. Very hilly and twisty. The roads were lightly traveled two laners, for the most part. One did open into a divided four lane for a couple of miles, but then I turned onto a different road, and it was back to narrow, twisted hills. Eventually, I found Rabbit Hash. I never did spot the General Store, which is supposed to be really neat, but that’s OK; I’ll just have to go back one of these days and look a little harder. It’s kind of funny how my mind jumps around when I’m just out for a Sunday Ride. I started thinking about Rabbit Hash and wondering if it was anything like Corned Beef Hash. Then I started wondering if it was anything like Blonde Lebanese Hash. I couldn’t decide if one should eat it or smoke it. That made me think of the time back in the early ‘70s when I ate about a two gram chunk of the aforementioned Blonde when I thought I was about to be arrested (I was quite mellow at work the next day). I also was thinking about the price of gas. A week ago, it was $2.07/Gal for Regular. Today, it was $2.33. It just jumped up .26 cents over night, for no apparent reason. Then I was thinking about how when the price goes down, it’s a cent or two at a time over a period of weeks, but when it goes up, it’s a big raise overnight. I also was wondering why it’s .50 more for Premium. A couple of years ago, it was only .20 more. I’m quite sure there’s some bullshit explanation combined with smoke and mirrors to explain it, but in my heart, I know that they’re only blowing smoke up my ass. The price went up because they want a bit more profit. Well, anyhow; I had a very pleasant afternoon ride, and when I got home, I fried an Italian Sausage burger with Provolone cheese and had that on a grilled Onion roll for dinner. It was delicious. I think that tomorrow, I’ll check out that mower that Perry gave me, and then I’ll cut the grass. | ||

What’s Up, Doc? In a few minutes, I have to head out and see my new Urologist. He’s the first of three doctors that I have appointments with over the next week. Tomorrow, I see my new Primary Care Physician and next Tuesday, I see my new Cardiologist. Oh, joy. Yesterday, it rained most of the day. David took me over to Ikea to check the place out. I was a good boy and didn’t spend much. I bought a squeegee to clean the shower doors with, a cheese grater and a new dish drainer. I didn’t buy the bed that really caught my eye, or any of the other neat things that would really look good in my house (that TV stand was really sweet looking; much nicer than the milk crates and shelves that I’m presently using). Once I got home, the rain stopped and the sun came out, so I went out to the rose bush back yard with the pruning shears and started taking down the overgrowth along the fence line. There’s a lot of it, and I don’t know what I’m going to do with it all, but when I’m done, the yard will look a whole lot better. It’ll look a whole lot bigger, as well. *********************************************** Well; it’s now a day and a half later. I saw the Urologist yesterday and my new Primary Care Physician today. Tomorrow morning, I have to have my blood drawn and I have to fast. That means no coffee until after I get it done. My new PCP wants me to have a Colonoscopy. Oh, lovely. I hope that I don’t have to drink a gallon of soapy Kool Aid the night before; like I did last time. I also hope that the results of the procedure are as good as the results of the last one was. Like I said, I have to get my blood drawn tomorrow morning. I think that I’ll stop at the CVS on my way home and get one of my prescriptions refilled. I need to do that pretty soon, so if I do it on my way, I’ll be killing two stones with one bird. I couldn’t work out in the yard today. There were scattered but frequent thunderstorms. I got soaked on my way over to the Doctor’s. It was dry when I left home and it was dry at the Christ Hospital building, but it feral poured really heavy for a couple of hundred yards between the two locations. It was like riding through a waterfall and I got soaked. I had a dry ride home, but it started storming as soon as I got back, so I installed the new faucet that Don gave me for my kitchen sink. Now, the sink doesn’t sound like a machine gun when I turn the water on. It just works like it should. Today was a slacker day. but I still managed to get something accomplished. I don’t have to be in full Attack mode every day. As long as I do something constructive around the house, then eventually, it will all get done. I think that I’m going to start sorting out all my shit in the basement soon. Actually, I started a few days ago, but I need to spend a bit more time down there and figure out what I want to put where. It will look a whole lot better once I get it organized. There are two movies in the theater that I want to see at present. Cars 3 and the new Spiderman movie. I was thinking of going today, but the thunderstorm killed that idea. If I can get my laundry done early, Maybe I can get to the theater for the afternoon. I’m toying with the idea of riding down to Louisville, Kentucky. I haven’t been there in many years. I’ve lost track of everybody that I knew, but I still have some memories. I don’t know if going would be a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s only a hundred miles or so away. I’ll have to think about it some more. There’s also the West Virginia Buell Rally. I’ll be there unless there’s a medical reason that will keep me from going. I’m also thinking about maybe riding to Peoria to see the TT next month. I’ve only been there once, but it was a really neat track. Maybe Henry Wiles will be able to beat the Indians there. I’d enjoy that. If I don’t go to the TT, then I can always hit the Mile in Springfield on Labor Day weekend. Then again, maybe I can figure a way to see both races. I’d really like that. I’ll have to keep a close watch on my finances and I hope that everything is cool with my bladder and that I won’t have to do another round of Chemo before I decide whether I’m going to one race or both. Hopefully, I’ll be able to hit both. | ||

Covington used to have a nice bar with some good beer, the cack (Grammer police) and bull was the name of the place. There's another bar, much more sports oriented, that will shuttle you to the reds games and back for free, just for drinking beer at this place. The aquarium is pretty neat, you walk through it, and if you are up for a ride cbus had a drive in that is pretty cool - we saw cars three a few weeks ago from the back of my truck out here. Rabbit hash used to have motorbike rallies, but I never went to one. Hopefully you can get settled in the Midwest. Ride up to Portsmouth sometime and check out the flood wall then head into KY on route 7 (I think) or you can take it North to pburgh which would be a great time too. | ||

Krispy Kreme, Rabbit Hash and The River In 1979, I was working on the River as a deck hand on a Tow Boat. I would work 30 days on and 30 days off. I got off the boat and went back to Louisville one evening, picked up my bike from where I was storing it and went out in search of my friends. I found Wild Bill and Nancy and Hank and Donna at one place just before closing. We all decided to ride over to Waffle House to get something to eat. Along the way, the blue lights came on behind us, and we pulled over. At least Wild Bill and I did; Hank was completely shitfaced and he never saw the lights. He just kept on riding at 20 MPH and faded into the distance. The deputy sheriff who pulled us over immediately gave us grief about drag racing. Then he demanded to know how much we’d been drinking. I was stone cold sober and told him so, but he didn’t believe me. Bill said, “I had a couple” and the deputy said, “That’s what I wanted to hear” He then told us to pull into the Krispy Kreme donut shop and drink coffee for 45 minutes. If he saw us on the street before 3:00, we were going to jail. He then went up a couple of blocks and turned into a side street and parked, waiting for us to head out. Wild Bill, Nancy and I did as he ordered, and at three o’clock continued on to Waffle House. Yesterday, I went back to that Krispy Kreme. I decided to take a day off from trimming hedges and cutting down the overgrowth along the edge of the yard, etc. and go for a ride. I stayed off highways almost the entire way to Louisville. I took small back roads and a US highway (Rt. 41) that ran alongside the River. Traffic was light and I could travel at my own pace. Sometimes, I was well above the posted limit, and sometimes, I was slower, but I rode in the zone where I was happy. Sometimes, it’s fun to strafe turns, sometimes it fun to check out the surrounding area. I did a little of both. I first went back to Rabbit Hash. I wanted to actually see the General Store. It’s right on the river, and I stopped and got a bottle of Virgil’s Cream Soda, checked the place out and sat on the front porch and drank the soda and watched the bikes coming and going. It’s a popular destination for Bikers in the area, and it’s really easy to understand why. The roads are as twisty as a snake with a broken back. I checked out the small towns along the way, and I was surprised to come upon a Steel Mill at one point, followed by a Stainless Steel Plant a few miles later. Of course, with the river right there, shipping heavy and bulky items would be much easier than using either rail or trucks. It’s also easier to bring in ore and coal for the furnaces. (did you know that one barge carries as much as 14 Boxcars?) As I got closer to Louisville, I started seeing Horse Farms. There has to be big money in horses. I’ve seen country clubs that weren’t so nice as some of the farms in Kentucky. Eventually, I got to Louisville and made my way to the Krispy Kreme. I got a couple of their famous glazed donuts and a cup of coffee and sat with my memories for a while. I wonder what happened to everybody that I used to know? I’ve lost track of everybody; Chuck, Crow, Ears, Rebel, Abe, Shirley, Fat Charlie, Cindy, Mona, Kathy and all the rest. I finished my donuts (Krispy Kreme has the flat best glazed donuts I’ve ever eaten) and coffee (I wish their coffee was equally good), then I started back towards Cincinnati. Originally, I was going to head north on I-65, then take US Rt. 50, but I changed my mind. I was in a bit of a maudlin mood, and I just wanted to get home, so I jumped on I-71. Traffic was heavy all the way. The one good thing about taking the quick way home was that I stopped in a rest area and got a road map of Kentucky. Now, when I head over the river, it’ll be a little easier to plot out routes. Kentucky is a beautiful state; riding there is a joy with its hills and roads that twist and turn surrounded by lush green woods and fields. And it’s just a two dollar ferry trip away. I can appreciate that. | ||

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly I just had lunch; a can of Hormel Chili with NO Beans and a couple of hot dog rolls; washed down by a quart of Cool Blue Gatorade. I had been out in the yard doing some esthetic enhancement - Cutting down weeds that have turned into small trees and putting the cut up pieces into garbage bags. The weather here is oppressively hot; it’s 92º F (33.3 C) and the dew point is 76º F (24.4 C). Working outside is like working in a steam bath. I was sweating heavily the whole time I was out there and I felt like I was about to pass out, so I decided to take a break and cool down. I realized that I had’t eaten anything yet today, so I grabbed a can of chili, along with a couple of Klosterman’s hot dog buns and that became my brunch. As I was eating, I started thinking about all the different foods that I really like that aren’t really that good for me. Not only do I like Hormel’s chili with NO Beans, I also really like Hormel’s Beef Tamales. I ate a can of those the other day for dinner. I also really enjoy Tina’s Red Hot Beef Burritos (5 for $2.00). I like to smother them with Newman’s own Salsa. Two of those burritos makes for a filling meal. Then there’s White Castle. About three of their cheeseburgers with an order of Onion Chips and a cup of their coffee makes for a delightful repast. Another "breakfast meal“ that probably isn’t the healthiest choice I could make, but is ambrosial to my taste buds is a couple of Kayem Natural Casing Frankfurters on Martin’s Potato Bread buns with Cain’s Sweet Pickle Relish and French’s Yellow Mustard. Unfortunately, of all four ingredients, only the French’s yellow mustard is available here. I’ve tried Queen City Sausage brand Dinner Franks which are locally made, and they’re pretty good, and the Kroger Sweet Pickle Relish isn’t bad, but it’s not the same. Oh well; I’ll just have to get used to what I can get. You folks who know me well know how much I love cold Pizza for breakfast. I haven’t had Pizza since I moved here last month. It’s really hard to find good pizza once you get away from the Northeast and I can be a really Choosy Mutha. There’s a little place here in Cheviot that’s caught my eye, and I’m probably going to give them a try in the near future. Hopefully, their pizza won’t be too bad. My brother’s been living here since the early 80s, and he’s even choosier about Italian food than I am (that’s the curse of growing up in an Italian Family). David hasn’t found what he considers good pizza yet; though he has found a couple of places that have edible pizza, if not good pizza. Still, he hasn’t hit all the pizza joints, so I might get lucky and find one that has good pizza. Those are the foods that just ran through my mind in the past fee minutes. I’m sure there are many items that I love that somebody will be quick to point out are bad for me, but I really don’t care. I’m alive and sputtering along, and I’m enjoying my life as much as I can. I’ve cooled down and now it’s time to finish today’s yard work. | ||

A bread machine! I use mine to make a fairly healthy Honey Oatmeal loaf every week or two. The nice thing with the machine is how easy it is to make dough for pizza with it. | ||

John, Try the Paul Newman brand pizza. IMO it is the best frozen pizza on the market. Especially if you like thin crust.....yummy | ||

Hmmm- DiGiorno or Freschetta have been my go-to's, bonus that they're usually available at my local United Grocery Outlet. LOOOVE that place- spend $50 there, or pay about double for the same stuff at Kroger or any other regular grocer. Got Aldi? We don't use them much, but they are also great spots to save $$$ on groceries. | ||
