You need to keep in mind that while we are focused on the one sitting Congressman that was shot, and occasionally the few others that were also shot, some fatally, this was not likely what this idiot had in mind. He had a large group in a fenced in enclosure. Right before starting to shoot, he confirmed that this was the Republican group that he was shooting at. It's hard to believe that he had anything in mind but killing off many sitting Republican congressmen. It clearly was not a focused attack on an individual, or small group. IMO, it's clear cut domestic terrorism committed against the Republican party. Does anyone question if we are seeing a civil war starting up? I'm just glad that so many on their side have never learned to shoot. That was a blessing in this case. | ||

It was an SKS. It's not an assault rifle since it's not select fire. It's not even an assault weapon in it's standard form as it doesn't have a detachable magazine or the required number of cosmetic features that define what an assault weapon is. Its just a garden variety semi auto rifle. But to be honest defining an assault weapon based on cosmetic features was dumb on .gov's part anyway. | ||

It would be interesting to see some coverage of how this guy became "radicalized" I'd like to see that too. It would be nice if we could tell who is about the cross the line between mentally sane enough to collect guns and mentally insane enough to justify prevention of gun ownership or whatever quick and practical means there might be of preventing terrorist like events from foreign and domestic threats. It does seem that even insane shooters know well enough to not let on what they're about to do. | ||

Aesquire: I get the dark flippancy regarding tragedy. I took the family to the JFK assassination memorial in Dallas a few years back. I had read about all the conspiracy theories, the magic bullet, the lone gunman, Russians, the mob, all of them. I won't render an opinion on how much validity there is to any of them, that's another thread. (The memorial is worth the time and touches on all of them too.) What I will say is, I walked to the window adjacent to the one Oswald used, (the actual window is roped off, with a Carcano propped up on a box), I looked out on the street below, and thought to myself, "18- 24 inch target, 30yards, moving 10-20 mph straight away, downward angle. You don't need a second shooter. Even I could probably do 3 in 7seconds, and get 66% if I practiced my bolt technique. I'm more skeptical of conspiracies, but I 'm always open to the possibility. | ||

A retired Marine buddy insists he has a good chance of making the shots under those circumstances. Oswald was an ex-marine, KGB wannabe, that the Soviets decided was a nut not worth having as a propaganda tool, much less a agent. ( or picked as an agent. No way to tell. Unless they release his file. ) Personally I could get the number of shots off. Pretty sure I could hit the car. Be pure luck to get the reported results. Me? At least he plans to go back there in the next couple of years. Also he's not the wack job that many are, but he sure isn't the typical Northern Michigan country guy. Be pure luck to get the reported results. You never know when that will happen. When I started sighting in my AR-15 I did a three shot group in one ragged hole at 100 yards. Miracles happen! The first shot would be at his discretion. A bit of luck on one of the two other shots is certainly withing the realm of possibilities. | ||
