Anyone have any experience with home video security systems? Looking like undesirables may be nosing around under the guise of looking at the house next door. One guy offered to sell drugs to my lady's 17 year old daughter yesterday but we didn't have any pictures to give to the police when the report was filed. Looking at this one as a good compromise between features and price: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9 SIA46G2335410 |

I've got one similar to that, same mfg. 5 MP cameras, 6 channels. Wish I'd gone with a larger drive in it, 2 TB isn't nearly enough. Excellent tech support, even after the warranty period was long gone. I've had mine up and running with minimal problems for the last 2 years now. I'd go for the highest recorded resolution possible. Although it doesn't say it anywhere in the literature, if you have wifi and wireless cameras, those can be directed to the NVR and recorded just the same as the wired IP cameras they ship with it. I've got 2 on my network just because I can, although both are in the garage right now. |

My place is covered with Nest. Video and audio .... good sound, good resolution, dead reliable. I'm sitting in a bar in Manhattan and just said "hello" to my mailman (delivering an international Ulysses light setup) from 100 miles away. |

The Nest stuff is beyond my price range right now. Spent part of lunch scoping out camera locations and places where I can get the cables from outside to inside. Going to put one on the shed with direct burial cable, might put another on a light pole out front. Probably use the direct burial cable for everything as I can either buy premade cables or a 1000 foot spool and the cost will be the same for one premade cable in the run I would need to get to the shed. 1000 feet would leave plenty extra from the entire project. I'll definitely put the 4TB drive in it, not sure I'll use all 8 cameras, can place about 6 right now. Going to put a couple of the bigger camera looking versions right in line of sight as a deterrent, the domes will go in less obvious spots. Often the presence of cameras will make the casual lowlife move on to the next house, only the determined lowlifes will still break in. Still need to make sure everybody is ready for this though before I buy it, there are of course privacy concerns that everyone needs to agree upon. |

Nest is nice, but be aware you are not the only one with access to it... Read the TOS. If you are OK with that, then go for it. |

If some millennial in Silicon Valley watches to watch me tripping into the kitchen at 0430 in my skivvies for coffee . . . more power to them. Also . . . like the cameras on the 4 - 27" Mac screens . . . a business card and tape is a great security measure. |

By the way . . . don't think your insurance company doesn't know when you leave before buckling your seat bely of change lanes without signaling. It's a WHOLE new day. |

I am pretty confident my insurance company has no idea when I leave or return or if I use my turn signals. But that depends if I take my new car or the bike or FJ40. It's not just that millenial down the street from me, it's whoever pays for that information. They reserve the right to share any and all data with their partners or advertisers. I had a great conversation with my Father in Law about this sort of thing (He's retired FBI). Various law enforcement agencies no longer have to get warrants to tap phones or security systems, because they can just pay for the information, just like they pay informants. Keeps them legal and reduces the risk of having information thrown out of court because someone forgot to dot the "i's" on a warrant. I was at the RSA security conference a couple of weeks ago and these were being handed out en masse: https://www.amazon.com/Webcam-Cover-Laptops-Pad-De vices/dp/B004Z0XSY6 Still does not deal with the microphone though. |

Many Windows/Linux laptops can have the webcam and maybe microphone disabled in BIOS/EFI and those should not be able to be flipped back on unless the computer came with a utility that can alter BIOS settings through the OS. Anyway, the camera system has been ordered with the 4TB drive and should be here next week. The direct burial cable (STP) and connectors were ordered from Cables and Kits in Florida and will probably be here tomorrow or Monday (they are always super quick). A coouple of the cameras will be "easy" to put up, already have power or cable TV running through the wall and I can just past the CAT5e through with it. The others are going to take some planning and digging. Going to put one of the big round "can style" cameras on the front porch so it is very visible as a deterrent. There will be two more covering the same area from different angles. The back and side entry will be the harder parts to cover, and more likely to be the points of illegal entry. |

If the quality of the dome camera housing is any indication, this should be a good system. The housing is real metal. The cameras are all much bigger than I was expecting, but that's OK. |

I found that the ones I have emit the faint red light which does draw attention to them. Pretty much impossible to miss that camera even when someone isn't looking for it. Good and bad I suppose, but it does work as a deterrent most of the time. In the few years that the setup has been installed, I think I've had only one instance that got me only slightly worked up. Everyone here is typically armed or has access to whatever means required to repel boarders or unwanted visitors, 911 not being a requirement until after the fact. They wouldn't be able to respond anywhere near as quickly as a well placed 9mm, .40 or .45 round. |

Yeah, half the battle is to have very visible cameras as a deterrent. I also found out that the dome cameras have a place for a micro SD card, I assume that the can style cameras are the same. Why do I care? A well organized thief would find the dvr and pull the drive or take the entire DVR to cover their tracks. But if the cameras have a record as well, then I could at least recover some evidence. Need to buy a bunch of cards now and set that up. These cameras are IP based, the DVR is essentially an IP camera receiver and recorder, as well as network switch with PoE to power the cameras. But the cameras can be seen and adjusted directly from their IP address, as well as download the video saved on their internal cards. This is a surprise I had not thought I would be getting. Redundant recordings could be useful. Lots more reading to do before installing them. |

I wouldn't suggest tying a red dot presentation pointer to a motion sensor . . . but I suppose it could be done. :-) |

Is there anything about which you don't claim to have indisputable understanding. Marriage relationships, are you any good at that? |
