I rode with the Lakeland guys one Sunday to Ocala and back in '98. We were comparing notes: he rode an S-3 at the time similar to mine, and he came from Mt. Sidney, VA up in the area I lived at the time. (He may have been related to the Huffmans that lived in the holler that I now own!) Nice guy.

No matter how good the new Harley Street rod 750 may be If Harley dealers treat it like Buells by just ignoring the potential customers that come in to look at it then it will fail sales wise Just like Buell's and the original sreet rod or the XR 1200 failed in order to attract new blood to there customer base Harley must make exceptionally great new models, Think B.M.W. when they came out with the S1000r sport bike Yes I am well aware how H.D. screwed Erik Buell and I doubt Erik would even consider going to work for them again but they really (Harley) need someone like him and give him free reign to develop some great H.D. badged bikes .but as I said they would have to train their dealers and especially some of there ignorant sales people that there are other motorcycles people are interested in other than slow heavy underperforming slugs.

I don't understand, or see the connection between the Street 750, and Buell...

The "Street Rod" has a crunched up rear fender and powder coated rear shock springs, which somehow makes it "not a cruiser" for whoever wrote the article. Which somehow makes it a sportbike??

I have to agree with most of what Bartimus stated. I don't get the angst about this bike. The platform is a replacement for the Blast in their riders edge program, which even when Buell was still in business, was getting a bit long in the tooth. It also seems to be a viable bike outside of the riders edge program. Beyond being a riders edge bike, I really don't see any parallel to Buell, other than being a motorcycle.

I've owned a few. Post AMF Harleys are much better than the AMF era. Really, mime were quite trouble free. Nothing like the older one's I've ridden where above 60 mph the speedo needle becomes a useless, vibrating blur. Still, it's not the bike for everybody. My biggest thing is that I never felt like I fit in with the "Harley riders". At the same time, I didn't fit with non-Harley riders. Perhaps not fitting into someone else's mold kept my mind open to Buell in the first place.

Like it or not, without Harley, Buell would likely never have been. Certainly not in the incarnation that I own. Was Wandell a shit? Sure. I'm glad he's gone. It's a step in the right direction for everyone. The reality is that HD does change, as do their bikes. Some have a hard time even seeing that reality.

You said the Blast was getting "long in the tooth"!

If they came out with new colors they would have been good for another twenty years. Up grade the head light and tail light another ten years. The Blast had a future at HD!

Chauly, if the guy with the S-3 was old, tall and had grey hair, and the voice of Foghorn Heghorn, he was my old friend Lafayette. He was known around BadWeb as Buellistic. He was a master with the tube frame bikes. He had a great sense of humor.

Sadly, he is gone. Died a while back.

this is his response to squids with mohawks on their helmets. He sometimes rode his Blast with that helmet on just for giggles.

By golly, Charlie, that aint too bad at all! I like the stance... how does it ride?

Aww, hell, you've not ridden that bike yet when those pics were taken... I can see that the pegs are intact!!

I'm ambivalent about the rim color, maybe the seat, but it looks pretty sweet anyways. Only nit to pick is the fork- dang but those fork tubes look puny! Cost cutting hits again...

If that seat was white, it would be a great summer bike.

I met Lafayette at a Bike Week gathering; memory lapse about where it was. I cooked barbecue for the group, I'm thinking '06, maybe? One of our guys that had a bad wreck and was in recovery. Anybody I recall Crusty was there.
Huffman preferred the S-3 to anything else he sold in the dealership.

The drive-by comparison was based on the untraditional (for HD) aggressive rake and steering head angle and a few other things of this "new" bike...

The "street rod" and the "street 750" aren't the same bike. The "street rod" here is supposed to be more agressive (sporty) and better designed. Neither is used in the riders edge course, that's the "street 500".

Revzilla made a good review at bike week:

If they couldn't find any curves in the Ocala National Forest, they needed a better guide. There is some good riding up that way.

I came home on my XB quite a few times with zero chicken stripes and my buddies in wonder how well that thing with a tractor engine got along.

Of course, the slower you go, the straighter the curves get.

Nope, not close.

I put a lot of work to get my XB9 racebike to reliably redline at 8000 with an absolute 8200 limit. It'd be on track 3 days a month. Keep in mind, it was a racebike that lived at 6000+ and not a streetbike that only once and a while got spun up.

I'm guessing a lot of work... from the bottom end to valve keepers.

I've heard the fork & blade rod setup is the biggest impediment to higher engine speeds.
A near 4" stroke doesn't help either...

Probably doesn't help that a 45 degree twin is never really balanced either. The entire thing was designed as more of a tractor engine than a racing engine. There's lot's of hurdles to spin it fast.

I sat on a Street Rod today. The photos made the pegs look too high, but as a 6'1" XB12S rider, it was just fine. The bar ends looked good and they were in stock in Parts. Very nice, but $99 each. The catalog also had clipons for Sportys!

Don't know if this is the most current thread, but behold the new Sportster S!

As an old fart, I don't like it, too bulky. They say it is 502# wet, though.
