Primary and backup heat full blast at night the past few, electric blanket deployed to ward off cold feet screams. ( bless the designers of two sided independent control for blanket! )
5 miles down the road my Caravan still hadn't warmed up enough to not want gloves. Inside.
Zac- I had an almost identical experience coming home the Tuesday after Christmas...
Found a dead-in-the-water "Jesus biker", this time on one of those big Yamaha scooters, at the truck stop just west of the 40/75 split. I was almost home, this guy had SC tags- was hoping to ride TO KANSAS to see his girlfriend for the holidays. Scooter wouldn't start. Dude had stripped off what looked to be a good Aerostitch jacket, under which he had a leather vest covered in the expected Godly patches.
I got my booster box out, and tried to boost him, dead. Might have had something to do with the double-wad of 3rd rate handlebar speakers (good for 1000 watts!) and assorted Xmas tree type lights all over the poor bike...
Called my mechanic, who's well versed in Yamaha, went through the a/b/c's to check this and that. Dude was quite obviously not the brightest bulb on the chandelier... I asked if he had the $$$ for a mechanic? No. Got $$$ for a plane ticket/bus ticket? Umm, no. Then he gets a phone call and finds out his GF is still IN THE UK, WAITING TO FLY ACROSS THE ATLANTIC and meet him in Kansas...
Despite my instincts to always help a biker get back rolling, I pretty quickly surmised there was little more I could do. At this point he wanted to go to an O'Reilly's to get some fuses... ummm, we're at A TRUCKSTOP. THEY HAVE FUSES.
I bought him a pack of fuses, said good luck, and came on home... left him as he was trying to reach the TN head of the CMA. Prayed a good bit for him. Prayed also that the poor guy find a bit of wisdom, just a sliver of a path to live a bit smarter. Oh well. At least it was only wet that day, not DANG COLD like today.
Heat pump has been running, stage 1 and stage 2, pretty full-time.
Hi today, 15. Low last night that I saw before bed, 6.
My ecobee3 thermostat is great though, I've got the aux ($$$) heat locked out until absolutely needed, it has a time-based program that I can set for "no aux heat until xxx min run time without meeting temp goal". It's barely come on according to the system monitor chart
And as I type this, it's a balmy 75.6 in my living room
Although I admit I'm going to be "that guy"...my Christmas lights aren't coming down today as planned. 14.9 degrees out with a strong wind? Yeah...I'll wait a day or two till the temps come up...
It's a dang nice feeling, knowing that the insulation job I had done back on 12/7/16 is now earning its keep. Got up for a whiz and a bit of candy to boost a low blood sugar just before dawn- 4 degrees outside! Weird thing is, the temps by Thursday/Friday here will be pushing mid to upper 60's! BIG plus- I'm off those days!!!
I used to make snow at a ski resort and was an avid snomobile rider back in my day. I recall riding my sled to work at the ski resort one evening(in 1977) to make snow. Whenever it was real cold we worked outside all night, where in it was -5F and we were experiencing a blizzard. We made record amounts of snow and got about a foot of natures best with it.
At eight am after a twelve hour shift, all of it spent outside, they asked me to plow the driveways and parking lots with the Tucker Snow Cat. I got that done at noon. It was still pitch black dark and snowing hard. The temperature dropped to -15F and the winds were blowing and gusting to 40 mph. They actually closed the resort for the day due to too much snow! Most of the roads in the area were impassable.
I hopped on my sled and rode the four mile trip home. My dad had to open the door so that I could get in the house. I could not move my hands in my gloves as all of my articles of clothing under my suit had gotten sweaty working all night and were now frozen into my riding position. He helped me get my suit off as it thawed standing by the wood stove. I will never forget when the strap on my helmet thawed so that I could finally get it off. There was a layer of ice on top of my head gear. It was sweaty and froze to my hair on my way home(of course I rode it at 80+ mph. Doh!)
It took several hours to warm up starting with a very cold bath, warming it slowly to avoid the stinging of feeling coming back into my skin.
I moved to Florida a couple of years later on purpose. Now some forty years later, I really hate being cold more than I did when I was twenty. I endured lots of winter riding and several winter trips on my Uly, but always enjoyed it more above 70F.
Come on guys, man up ! Of course I'm sitting here next to my wood stove saying that. I've skied in -60, they closed the mountain down right after that I was one of the last people down. I'm a lot older now but I'm happy to say, the cold still does not bother me when I'm out in it.
My place looks like a glazed donut today - got about 3/8" of ice accumulation yesterday/last night. Combination of freezing rain and freezing fog. Pretty cool looking...but I'm not getting anywhere in the Jeep.
I did get the best impulse buy of ALL TIME last summer though. Sports Authority was going out of business and I was walking through, looking at "deals". Mid-July or something - dead-hot summer weather. They had these things clearanced for like $5 so I snagged a pair. Awesome. Highly recommend.
Steve, They don't look happy do they. Looks like they all got picked up and taken 30 miles into the wilderness and told if they gave all they had on them to charity, they could have a ride back. Sometimes I see those expressions at church. I usually think, Hot/Cold, let the spewing begin. Often times we are so blessed, we don't recognize it. I want to go for a sleigh ride!
I hate to say it, but I noticed the same thing about the lack of smiles. To be fair, the lady at the front, with the pink ear muffs... She always looks that way. Apparently so does her family sitting at the front. The girls toward the back by me, with the pink hat, and the pink hoodie, would have been happier on their sleds, especially when their friends came by on sleds and gave a wave. I really don't blame them. Overall, it was better than the chain-gang expressions shown in the picture.
Winter Thats when the license plates change color and it's cool enough to ride during the day time. Whats this heater thing your talking about? We have the A/C on still a little too warm and damp to open windows/ I ll check back later after my evening swim therapy for the shoulder
Winter of a different sort. This happened last week (starting 01/06/2017) and stranded us at home for 3 days with no power or water. Cell coverage was spotty since a tree took out the power, then another took out the generator. We got over 22" of rain at my house from the 6th through the 11th.:
You can see my water line. This is just before the road gave way again and broke the main;
This is another slide that started in December. This picture was taken just after they cleaned it up again. The concrete barriers got washed across the road. Notice the new power pole...
I drove under this tree to get home last Monday night (should have never left as it took me a couple of hours and driving around 5 road closed signs and under 2 set of wire and a couple of downed tree's).
All of the roads out of Boulder Creek were blocked by something like this, or worse:
The wife's car had a redwood branch go through the back window during the early morning of the 7th and 5" of rain poured in. My car is in the shop due to me running over a smallish rock that came down, destroying the exhaust header, catalytic converter and bending the exhaust pipe.
Both cars are in the shop for at least another week while they fix the damage.
We also had 4 leaks in our roof from falling branches (redwood branches that are over 30' long and some 8" in diameter), 3 of which I was able to fix, but have to wait for some dry weather so I can remove one of my skylights and replace the flashing.
Needs where i live we us a/c pretty much 24 7 I have the unit in my office running now. Most of our buildings do not have any heat other than the lighting. In some buildings the sensible heat load is higher in winter than in summer due to the low sun angle. Mechanical contracting has been very good to me 5 Buell's and a EBR will be addeed this year along with a lake house and midcentury modern on the mountain top In WV.
So speak nicely about HVAC Besides we benefit from all the barely clothed Hot women all over Palm Beach My office is 5 miles from Trumps place
Feb 2, we hit 70F degrees yesterday. I damn near got the Uly out for a spin. But being lazy I opted for a ride to town in a Corvette. Maybe next warm day.
Today, the average daily high starts to finally rise. It's been at 33º F since January 7. Today, it rises to 34º. It's a sure sign that Spring is coming!
55 tomorrow they say. Need to put all the dirt bikes in storage to make some more room in the garage. Just got my Harley carb back from Bobby Wood. Hope I have time to install it!
... funny! My aunt, who lives in Hixon TN just north of Chattanooga, didn't hardly see any snow at that time either. Up here in Mur-Vil, Knoxville, it was a LOT heavier... didn't get to ride my sled because the dang plow came through too early and ruined a GREAT sledding hill right next to me! ARRRGGHHH
Highs for the next week here shows high 40s to high 60s... I will try to dig the Uly out of the garage. Or roll the RS out the front door of the shop...
Need some wind therapy. Some artillery therapy wouldn't hurt either.
Very mild February so far. Biggest snowstorm last year was late March.
You guys are killin' me. For the first time in 40 years of (legal) street riding, I've missed riding for 2 consecutive calender months. The last day or so, I've got my street plowed out enough for a single track, and yesterday, the temps hit into the 40s, but it took so dang long to put the battery back into the Victory and the bike all back together that is was after 3 pm, and the shadows were growing long. The down side of living where I do is that the 3 ways out of town are all canyons (Ok, it's only bad in the winter) and on warm days, the runoff crosses the roads that freeze again in the shadows.
