Pretty much, but where is the correlation between EU beef bans and US motorcycle sales? Meat. Heads.

Why don't they just not use the chemicals in the beef in the first place !

It's been known for a long, long time that it causes all kinds of human ailments and we are one of the only countries that do this.

To tax motorcycles to equalize it is ridiculous.

If your going to eat meat, your way better off eating organic or going out and killing your own

Dangit man, NOW you got me thinking about all the OTHER proteins I love... yes, ALL of them pretty much will have some kind of hormone or chemical added. And those dang winter tomatoes that might as well be wet cardboard, and...

Yeesh.

Probably because the same beef lobby keeps the politicians pockets fat so the chemicals won't be outlawed.

{red}{WHAAAATTTT?!??!

The Wiki entry said that the chicken tax curtailed the old VW type 2 flatbed trucks?!?! F*CKIN' A!!! Just look at all the ones we have today... in VW custom magazines! DANGIT! I once owned a 1970 Transporter... one of the most funnin' rides evaaar. Yes, I was driving a soda can, but- I'd love another vintage VW of some sort.

Flavor of weird, all these tariff brainfarts.

I first heard of the chicken tax a few years back when Indian company Mahindra was considering importing a small diesel pickup. The way around the chicken tax is to have an "assembly" plant in the US where you make all your parts overseas, ship them as a "kit" to the US, and then assemble them into a truck.

Unfortunately, Mahindra turned out to have similarly ethical business practices to Hero. Just when the trucks had passed EPA testing, Mahindra decided not to import them, and completely screwed over their US distributor and the fledgling dealership network that was waiting on the trucks.

I'd like a new Datsun 1200.

It was pretty damn close:

Apparently the issue was that after Mahindra added all the crap needed to pass EPA certification, the trucks only got ~23 MPG, which completely killed the whole reason for bringing them here. Hell, a full-size truck from any of the American manufacturers will do that well on gasoline.

I beat 23 with a 360ci in a RAM. I hit 44 mpg with the Datsun 1200 in the 70s.

I owned 2 1978 Z cars- the first was a 2 seater, the second, 2+2. Loved both, but the longer Z was schweet. Got pics of it on Daytona Beach, just after I had it painted a beautiful pearl white...

I've always wanted one of these. A Fairlady coupe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datsun_Sports

So- now that I've drifted the thread... wazzup with beef and 500cc motorcycles?

I read an article that said when the fist batch of Z cars came off the boat in California, they were labeled "Fair Lady".

The receiving distributor didn't like it and had some decals made as 240Z or whatever.

It seems that the Japanese word or expression that translates to Fair Lady carries a bit more sexual connotation that the English translation.

Another aside: Nissan has always been Nissan. When they decided to export to the USA, they were not sure if it would fly, so they changed the name to Datsun, so that if it failed, Nissan would not lose face.

A friend's father worked as a mechanic at a local dealership in the 60's and 70's. He said that in order to build a legacy of reliability, the Japanese companies would go over a car brought into the dealership for warranty work and fix any tiny thing that was wrong. And they didn't write it up on the customer paperwork other than the thing the customer brought the car in for.

He said that the super tough little pushrod four banger they used in the cars was a copy of an old Mercedes engine with a tweak here and there.

When I worked at the Honda shop in '72 the parts guy bought a Datsun pickup. We would throw our motocross bikes in the back and go racing on Sunday. That thing was so oversprung it would beat you to death until he took the spring packs apart and removed a bunch of leaves. He had that thing until the body rusted so bad parts would fall off.

Over in the Uk we do not allow all the growth hormones/ steroids/ GMO/ anti biotics that are allowed in the American food chain and it gives us a warm feeling of righteousness (rightly or wrongly).
Here's the problem, during a visit to the US a few years ago, I had the opportunity to try the whole American steak experience, what a revelation! The steak was tender and oh so flavoursome, the best steak I had ever had. I think of this as the Foie Gras dilemma, we all know that this is not the way to treat animals, but damn it tastes good. American beef/ foie gras both remain guilty pleasures.

I was in the UK in the early 80s for a few years. I lived in Feltwell. You are spot on about flavor differences. English always tasted like it was boiled to death. I loved England back then, but not the beef or chicken. KFC tasted chicken tasted like fish. I am still not allowed to give blood in the US because of the mad cow back then.

The worst I was able to do to that 1200 as a 16 year old was to bend a push rod. It jumped train track pretty good to. I broke a fuel sending unit once.

I go from Ohio to London a couple of times a year... and just laugh when people in London order steak.

Indian? Heck yeah. French? Maybe, but probably not. Italian? Probably pretty good. Even fish and chips with mushy peas. Yum. But steak in London? Anything but...

Hmmm... I work in a high-end steakhouse, and make a point to bring home scraps (mostly prime filet) for my 2 dogs. Funny to think that they eat better steak than most in the UK! It's hard to believe how much GREAT food is wasted in this world... truly a shame.
At least my 2 furry boys eat well- Iams mainly, then prime cuts of beef...

Given that the 500cc MC market is poised for serious growth, I'm still looking for ANY rationale in linking overseas US beef sales with smaller motorcycle imports to the US.

SOFA KING WE TODD ED.

Back to the cars- IIRC the early Z cars were the first produced with a Unibody design. Plus the seatbelts were kinda "twitchy"- they'd hold you quite well. I fell asleep at the wheel in my first one and rolled it, car was totaled. I walked away with only a sore neck.

To this day, a '78 or earlier Z is my favorite car.
