The original anime movie is incredible and one of my favorite movies of all time.

It's been remade as a motion picture starring Scarlett Johansson. I'm really hoping they haven't screwed it up too bad.

Original trailer from 1995:

A composite:

The way Hollywood screws up a good thing I'm skeptical.

Trailer looks pretty good... kind of matrix-y

They can't go too far wrong with 2 hours of Scarlett Johansson.

My favorite was her role in "Under the Skin..." not because of the nudity but because she played it well. She's actually relatively unremarkable in the nude.

^ Strange but cool flick. Her body is not exactly remarkable, but she's smoking hot in a "real woman" sort of way.

+1. "Under The Skin" was a rare bird- a genuinely well-done sci-fi flick. What made it a "dodo bird" rare was the pro racers doing the crazy-good rain riding throughout the film.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_the_Skin_(2013_film)

Might have to watch that again soon.

DANG.

Just watched the trailers... although I've generally sworn off going to the movies for watching them at home, I may have to pay for that one.

Parts of the original anime trailer reminded me of "Heavy Metal". The male protagonist resembles a character from the HM magazines, Ranxerox.

OK- my sweetie's gone, so I can crank my hi-fi... seems that movie will have a decent soundtrack.

Anyone here have Donald Fagen's "Kamakiriad'? If you're a Steely Dan fan, GET IT. Nicely done, with a futuristic theme throughout. Jammin with it LOUD now. ; )

Looking forward to it.

It'll be impossible to equal the animated version but I don't get hung up on cannon or the books if I can help it.

Like all the other comic book movies I'm just happy to see them made.... won't keep me from complaining but I try not to ahead of time.

Squids;

Good call on the Ranxerox match. Very close. The art work is similar too.

Looking forward to seeing it on the big screen too. Gotta love the Depeche Mode song in the trailer...

BTW: I have all but 5 or 6 of the HM magazines from 1976, including a couple of rare dual cover copies.

Wow! When I was a kid, my best buddy and I would walk down the highway from our neighborhood to the store, buy candy/jerky/soda/junk, and I'd speed-read all the comics I could- lots cheaper than buying them...

I'd scan the Heavy Metal issues too. Loved the artwork, got into several of the storylines... dang but it'd be neat to have a collection of those magazines now!

It's amazing how tame the cartoons in HM have gotten. Used to be more graphic than penthouse, now the private bits are usually covered by the dialogue bubbles.

Den is a good example. Hmm Big!

lol!

I'm now working on getting the entire collection of the Métal Hurlant (french edition). Some issues are similar, but not identical.

Den was awesome.
The highlight of every month at sea was the delivery of my Easyriders and Heavy Metal.

The title track from the movie is one of my favorite pieces.
Played at 11.

It was amazing how many fantastic musicians contributed to the HM soundtrack.

The Steely Dan "Gold" CD I have has the last 2 tracks that were produced for the film... "True Companion" and "Century's End". "True Companion" is one of my favorite Steely Dan songs- just a stupendous, cruising intro....``

Too bad, Rick... give it another chance! The plot has weak spots, but overall the animation is groundbreaking for its time, and you can't beat the soundtrack!

Been a while, but I used to have an animated film from Ralph Bakshi (IIRC) that was just as or more edgy than HM- never got wide theatrical release. I'll have to look it back up sometime...

Bakshi's Wizards and LOTR were a huge focus in my psychedelics years.

Fritz the Cat was the first X rated film I ever saw.
It was a midnight show the night before my 18th B'day and the ticket lady wouldn't give me a ticket until it was 12:00 and I turned 18.

Fritz the Cat & Heavy Traffic. Ground breaking.

Wizards is on my short list for all time greats.

In anime Akira is the benchmark. The first 20 odd minutes with the motorcycle gangs in Neo-Tokyo is still heart pounding action never seen before. I admit it got pretty weird after that..... but awesomely so.

There's a YouTube video of the "best 11 Miyazaki films" ...... funny because he's made 11 feature films. It's a decent if biased list.

Spirited Away is superb and Princess Mononoke a masterpiece. History buffs & students of Japanese mythology especially enjoy both.

Not to ignore the others. .. Porco Rosso is beautiful & touching...... just try & describe the plot of any of them : )

I enjoy Scarlett Johansson's work. Not just because I'm a dirty old man. I liked Lucy ( despite the junk science ) by Luc Besson maker of Leon The Professional, Transporter, etc. And especially The Fifth Element. ( also on my short list )

Enjoy.

I really like this video/song from one of the Macross movies. It's more techno then rock and roll, but it's extremely well done.

"Macross Plus" is one in a long line of the franchise, but is a good movie/series/sound track.

Whatever they painted on her to resemble pants in the last few Marvel movies was... well, marvelous!

It's easy for me to say. I have a S/O that in her formative years could put Scarlett Jo to shame in that respect.

Scarlett Jo looks amazing when professionally made up and dressed to the nines. Strip all that away and she's just another woman. It's part of her charm, really. She's basically the definition of "girl next door."

In addition to being able to look good all " made up and dressed to the nines" it's also noteworthy that she has the ability to command $15,000,000.00 for doing so.

Now THAT is no girl next door.

While some of her roles, like Lucy, call for robotic unemotional stoicism, her signature starring role, Black Widow, calls for subtle humor & high athletic ability, not an easy combination.

Complaints about love plotlines in Age Of Ultron aside, (certainly not the actor's fault) Scarlett has done a great job of bringing a fictional character to life. ( points to Robert Downey Jr and the rest as well. Can you see anyone else as Tony Stark or Natasha Romanov? )

There will be complaints about "white washing" using an occidental to play an Asian. Just as in Dr. Strange. ( where such complaints were imho a bit justified ) After all there are excellent Japanese actresses who could play the role just as well. But the movie probably couldn't get made without a star familiar to the money men in Hollywood.

The big advantage to star power isn't the cash. It's the pull to get projects you like in a very stodgy Hollywood system.

Hollywood has shown itself pretty bankrupt for fresh ideas. That's why comic book movies & endless Sequels are the theme today. Lucy was a French director project, ( Fifth Element ) & most big movies are made in Canada or overseas.....

Assume long rant on crappy Hollywood.

Tony - no.
Natasha - that girl from underworld.
