I rode a buddie's 500 in 1971 or so and tried to ride it like my BSA 650. Jeez, when it finally revved enough to get on the pipe, I was a lucky sumbitch that I was able to chop the throttle right now. |

Jeez, when it finally revved enough to get on the pipe, I was a lucky sumbitch that I was able to chop the throttle right now. I had that happen . . . the first time I rode a 2-stroke. About 8,000RPM is "dull. . . nothing there" and suddenly KABLAM ! Like you . . . I was able to chop the throttle immediately . . . and hit the crummy brakes . . . I gingerly returned the bike to it's owner . . .with a new found respect for what 2-strokes were all about. |

My GT380 was not a typical 2 stroke triple... slow and not so peaky. Easy to work on and didn't handle that bad. I eventually learned to use it at 100%. ( which would get my corpse arrested on my Cyclone ) The Kawasaki 500? Combine light switch power delivery, flexible chassis, 19th century suspension bits and tires made of linoleum........ That one got donated. I tried the 750 Kawasaki. That's a "kill it's owner" machine and pretty high on the list... next to a 700 hp Mustang. |

Had a GT750. Ported it and milled the head for more compression plus Kirker header. It provided excitement. I wouldn't really want to go back though. I do remember some guy at a stop light arguing with me that I had a bad valve. I really don't miss the oil film that built up on everything at the back of the bike. |

I tried the 750 Kawasaki. I tried one for a couple years. And your assessment is correct. Its amazing I lived! The bike didn't, sadly... Sure was fun listening to people saying, "we're here to ride, not cut grass," and leaving them in a cloud of 2 stroke smoke. Those were the days |

The GT500 wasn't bad. The GT380 weighed almost as much. Not a light quick bike like a RD400 but solid cruising machine. The GT750 Water Buffalo was a great base for a touring machine and also a good choice for a side car. |

Across the pond, they were called "kettles". First mass-produced water-cooled bike. I'd heard that they make good touring bikes... had a GT185, enjoyed it a lot. Once owned a RZ350. Bored 0.40 over, with Spec II pipes, Boyesen reeds, a steering dampener, one tooth smaller front sprocket, slight rejetting. Like God's own slingshot. |
