http://www.cbsnews.com/news/commentary-the-unbeara ble-smugness-of-the-press-presidential-election-20 16/ I often mock the Journalism students that are my customers. I have Medical/engineering/hard science customers who spend a lot of time agonizing over which internship at which megacorp will give them the best steps forward in life. The Journo types are just like the kids playing ball on the corner. The Dream is to be the next Jordan or marry Madonna and play the World Series... whatever. The Sports Dream that hard work and talent can make any kid from any walk of life a very rich person very quickly. The important part of that is talent & hard work. Both are needed to be even a third string bench warmer at the College level, much less Pro. No hard work and talent only goes so far. No talent and hard work only gets you to good amateur. You'll be ignored in any draft. Journo students want to follow Woodward & Bernstein and change the world. Get a Pulitzer Prize and that anchor slot. All they have to do to graduate with honors is parrot the teacher's political rants. Any actual knowledge of physics, engineering, or even law isn't just optional, it's inconceivable. ( yes that word means what I think it does ) |

They are still saying we are nothing but racist and sexist. Look at this piece from this moron who actually said this ... " To white men, Trump promises the restoration of diminishing supremacy over both women and people of color. To white women, he promises a return to a simpler time, when their race alone made them exceptional and worthy of special protection. " http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/09/opinions/trumps-win- women-filipovic/index.html Like was said above ... they just don't get it and sadly they never will. |

The SO has been a High School Teacher for 20 years. She has more education than 90% of the doctors and lawyers out there (none of it paid for by student loans), but when she tries to recommend what is right for one of her students and it does not include a 4 year degree, the parents call her a hack, racist, bigot and many other names not worthy of an adults mouth. Instead they push for their kid to do something they are unable to accomplish and then blame the school system for their child's failure. One couple, who are both Stanford Professors, insist that their child, who has an IQ one point above MR, will be the best neurosurgeon on the planet. They also claim that any day now her DNA will kick in and she will be as smart as they are. Funny they don't realize that is not how it works. This is one of thousands of examples of parents out of touch with reality. They have kept her out of the classes she needs to get a proper education and instead push her to attend college prep classes that she fails miserably and again blame it on the teachers... If they allowed the school to place her properly she would get education and life skills services until she turns 25, but instead she is going to fail all her classes, not graduate and get kicked out of the system at 18. I blame parents for most of the education issues in this country. It would take pages to explain more, but the schools bow to the will of the parents as they have 51% of the choice of what happens in school and have no clue what they are asking sometimes. Seriously, if a room full of doctors told you that you had a brain tumor, would you argue with them or get it fixed? |

I'm Liberal, but not leftist. There's a profound difference. I assume the lefty idiot I'm talking to is Wrong. Not Evil. I say his chosen leaders are evil, and can point out the century plus track of economic & civil rights destruction left in the wake of the ideology. So I very often get a conversation that slams headlong into a concrete wall when I point out.."I kinda like Bernie. He sure got screwed by Hillary. My issue is his ideology has murdered millions of people in cold blood in my lifetime." At which point the person I'm talking to mentally shorts out and begins to make weird noises. If I offer to give them references and start counting the dead, that pretty much deteriorates to screaming obscenities and running away. OTOH, the Leftists have been told YOU are evil. Not mistaken. Not in error. Evil. If you were mistaken, then you could in theory be educated to the truth. Since Leftists don't actually have any truth, they cannot use that tactic. So they have no choice but to assume you want to eat their children in a satanic ritual. Or Catholic, they're a big vague on religion, since Their Own is vehemently against learning other faiths. Comparative religion isn't a popular course when you aim to promote only one, and condemn all others. Especially when you find they will deny that the things they hold by faith alone are a religion. It can't be. They Are Right. You Are Evil. No religion here. |

The requirements for elementary teachers are insane. They basically require a level of education totally unreasonable for the job, and imply that the only way to learn to be a good teacher is by taking teacher class after teacher class. They have created the bed they lie in, but it sure precludes a lot of people that would be crazy good elementary and middle school teachers from the talent pool. |

I don't think that a 4 year degree and teaching credential is unreasonable. If done right, the credential should only take 18 months to 2 years. Sometimes only a year, but you have to be dedicated. You can even complete the credential requirements while you are on a temporary assignment. The other option is what you get in charter schools. No degree or credential required. Heck you barely have to pass a background check. They just cherry pick the students they think would be successful. Hell, I have been an engineer for 30 years and even a CTO at one point. I am not qualified to be a teacher mainly because I have no degree and I think that is a good thing. A lot of the teaching classes center around child development and how the brain learns at different stages of growth. They also have to learn how to use technology in the classrooms which is another good thing. My biggest issue with a lot of teachers is that they feel High School was the best part of their life and want to relive it everyday. That is why so many teachers feel the need to sleep with their students. They never grew up. OK, rant over for now. Just pisses me off when I see the SO work 12 hours a day to do her job and then listen to teachers get bagged on all the time... |

Off topic (except as it relates to the past several posts), but for what it's worth: Teachers are one of this country's greatest assets, and they should be paid, and treated, accordingly. Class sizes should be small, and school districts should NEVER have to beg for money. Teachers are NOT the enemy. They are, in most instances, angels and saints, and deserve our utmost support and thanks. Rant off. |

I'm fine with the 4 year degree, but once they have it, they have to keep renewing it with more classes every few years. So take some time off to be a mom or something, or do a career for a while, and when you come back you have to take more classes and pay more money to renew the certificate. It's gets expensive for a pretty low paying job. |

It's gets expensive for a pretty low paying job. Move to the Chicago burbs. Highest paid teachers in the country. Many making over $100K per year. They do better if they teach in the summer. I really wouldn't mind that if the results were there, and it wasn't such a politicized machine. I know a couple who are both teachers back there. Both are stoners, teaching elementary school. One teaches art, the other English. They manage to have a nice suburban house in an expensive neighborhood, afford toys like motorcycles, and own a summer house in Florida, along with a fishing boat. Add in their benefits package, and they are incredibly well paid. I know it's not like that all over the country, but they have it good there. |

It's funny, but we have heard much about how fractured and disorganized the GOP is. True enough. It's nothing compared to what BO & Hillary have done to the Dems though. That party is in absolute shambles. For crying out loud, their chairwoman left in shame and scandal, only to be replaced with another chairwoman surrounded by shame and scandal. And there is no way they didn't know it at the time. Her scandal involved her dealings with the freaking DNC! Talk about a train wreck! It just keeps on wrecking! |

"And teachers are not "political indoctrination drones" . . . . i.e. . . . my 3 year old granddaughter should NOT have come home yesterday spewing insults about President Elect Donald Trump." Agreed. The SO goes out of her way NOT to influence any of her students, to the point of changing any and all assignments or quizzes to specifically not support any party or candidate. When asked point blank about her beliefs or who she supports, her only answer is: "None of your business" and then explains why. Anyone in her classes disses on another student for their beliefs or becomes rude and they get the talking to. She has even pulled fellow teachers aside to explain that they are not there to influence decisions, rather provide information so they can make their own decisions. Her principal and staff support her as well. I hope you do have a chat with your grand daughters teacher AND principal. BTW: a couple of her students left early to attend a protest and she made it very clear that they will be marked with an unexcused absence. Several parents have already complained and the district has announced that they will back the teachers and enforce any absence that was not related to illness or pre-planned. |

It is tradition in the U.S. not to prosecute the former leaders when there is a power shift. Why? Because it's how third world dictators and Communist Regimes kill off the competition. There's a small difference between Hillary and Barry in this case. Prosecuting Barry would be a vindictive move and "not the way we are". No matter how much he deserves to be in prison for breaking election laws and naked corruption. Hillary, OTOH, is not a former leader, unless you count the time she co-President ruled with her cheating lying horndog husband. And She Was a Senator, a Class that really deserves more prison time. Hillary has however left zero doubt she's a felon. I bet you a box of Krispy Kreme she will be pardoned by Obama before he leaves, making any argument about this subject useless. And anything less than a kinetic strike on the current leadership won't change that. |

You'd think so but the President does issue get out of jail free cards. I'd think there'd have to be some specific references so a pardon for violating security & destruction of public documents, as Hillary will get, doesn't cover murder. But I'm no lawyer. This is rules for a private club. |

I remember a discussion here some time ago where it was stated someone had to be convicted of a crime before they could be pardoned. Marc Rich had never been tried when Clinton (the rapist, not the defender of rapists) pardoned him. |
