The problem IS ISLAM. David wood has a number of very informative videos on islam. He may be one of the most well versed SME's on Islam - certainly more so than the average muslim you might meet driving a cab in Seattle. The qran and other islamic texts are full of scientific errors, as well as racism, rape, murder, pedophilia, etc, etc. Did you know that the wings of flies can cure all kinds of diseases? neither did I (or any scientist ever). Did you know that the sun sets in a muddy pool, that standing up to urinate is the number one cause of condemnation, and that sucking on a woman's breasts will cause you to not want to have sex with her? Muhammed knew all of these things. Why don't any of them jive with science? Probably because he wasn't a prophet. | ||

That's true of Islam, Shinto, Baptists... All faiths. Islam is the one that tells them to kill you. and don't get all complacent about that "tiny minority". It's only when you think of a 4 billion person planet that 200 million is a tiny minority. That's the people who are willing to cheer as you are murdered. It's only thousands of people, living here, in the U.S. ( or being imported this year by Barry ) who are willing to murder you. And they are of ALL races and backgrounds. Until we support reform in islam, you get murdered for saying those kinds of things. you are totally right, reform is off the table. the only "hope" is for unfaithful muslims who are still unclear as to what their prophet preached. "peace through superior firepower" is (or used to be) an American way of thinking. "peace through violence and annihilation" is an islamic way of thinking. There is nothing else, no compromise, no altering of that which is most sacred. essentially, islam gives men justification to rape, pillage, murder, steal, destroy, slander. Let's talk some basic theology here. Heavens. Christian Heaven as most see it is a mish mash of medieval artwork, Fiction like Dante's Inferno, and cartoons. I don't recall any soaring descriptions in the Bible.. please throw me a bone here... Pretty much being there in the direct presence of God was good enough. The halos, clouds & harps are all cartoons. I don't think there's a word about that nonsense in the Book. Muslim Heaven is an adolescent's dream...mixed with the fantasies of horny old men with erectile disfunction. Do all the forbidden booze you want, no hang over. Drugs, all you want, don't get sick. Eat all the greatest food ever, never get sick, never get full, never get fat. And Sex! not real women, Oh, No!, they talk back. Islam gives you Houris. Part of the problem is that within Islam, when they aren't killing the non-believers, they are killing other Muslims that have slightly different interpretations of their religion. We have little to do with reforming Islam. We are not an Islamist state. Reform has to come from within, but that has lead to little more than bloodshed amongst themselves. From the real infidels, (that would be the proverbial "we") it's just not going to happen. Perhaps through another crusades, but that wasn't really reform of anything. | ||

The Saudis, Pakistanis and Iranians are all the Keepers of the Status Quo. If I were King, I'd support the good guys and hammer the bad. Cut off their oil supplies if Need be. Aesquire, heaven is described in the bible in several places. Some physical dimensions are laid out for the inner city which lies "four square", whatever that means, streets of gold, eternal presence of God, no need of sun for the eternal light of God. No tears, no sorrow, no marriage according to the words of Jesus himself. There are also descriptions of beasts and beings that just don't work with my mind, I can't contemplate them. While I completely understand your anger, and like you, I have friends of every faith, this is a very human thing. Humans are the #1 monsters. You can try to make a case that mosquitoes and viruses kill more of us, those things don't do so with deliberation. Ebola doesn't sit in his apartment getting angrier and angrier at the youtube video of an Imam telling him how nothing is his fault but it's YOURS. Yellow Fever doesn't hang out in a gay club then have a guilt driven rampage killing those he parties with because his father and his preacher told him to kill gays....and Smallpox doesn't kill gays because he fears his own father will torture him to death for getting a hummer in a bathroom. No, those are Human problems. And, almost exclusively religious ones. I'm a bit of a broken record when I point out, again, that there are 2 1/2 faiths on this planet today that have, at their core, a brutal acceptance of dishonesty when dealing with other faiths. And I narrow it down to 2 1/2 by ignoring all the different sects that each faith has. ( even while any 2 of the sub-groups will insist, screaming and killing, that they are nothing like the other. See Suni/Shia or Communist/Socialist ) And I only throw in the 1/2 because the incredible ignorance of most folk as to where the people that want them dead come from. So.... sure. A quick check on snopes would help with some of the fact checking... Do people still use snopes for fact checking? I've found so many verifiable errors coming from snopes it's not even funny. I got an email a while back detailing the fall of snopes, from a responsible fact checker, to liberal hack. No, I didn't read the provided link, so I'm making no comment on information provided there. Simply commenting on snopes in general. | ||

I remember when snopes started back in alt.urbanlegends on usenet back in 1994. A great forum, that shaped a lot of what the Internet became in ways that people that weren't there will never really understand. It's a shame Snopes became politicized to the degree they became half fact and half propaganda. Still lots of good facts out there, but you for sure can't take their conclusions at face value anymore. Both incorrect assertions based on the facts they do cite, and major omissions of relevant information that doesn't support their assertions. Not all useless, but kind of worse than useless, when it is seeded with deliberate misinformation. Kind of like the difference between broken glass in your driveway (meh) and broken glass in your hamburger (hell no). | ||

Ahh I remember usenet on a green CRT equipped VT101 at the university was my first taste of the internet. My friend showed me how to FTP things in 1992. I remember this very distinctly: I downloaded "Commander Keen" from finland to my little chunk of VAX. it was 640K and it took half a second. Then we left the VAX lab, went across the street to the PC lab and downloaded the file from the VAX to the dos machines with KERMIT I think it was 9600 baud. That took about 15 minutes! | ||
