Not because of drought. Because of dumping the water they previously saved to try to save a small fish that's not in danger of going extinct in any other place. Didn't work, by the way. They just wasted the water. FYI - I lived in San Diego for three years. Loved it.
Some numbers from my bro-in-law. A two bedroom apartment in Redwood City, $3300/mo. A single rented bedroom only $1500/mo. My wife is a real estate agent and she was told to expect a large migration of people from the Bay Area to East of Sacramento. There are plenty of people here in CA who consider themselves rednecks, and are happy to do so. Not everyone lives in liberal LA or SF. Remember there is an active effort to create the State of Jefferson out of the northern counties. California is a big state with no representation for conservatives. Many of our leaders are just as much a part of the Republican Establishment as they are in DC. Both our Senate and Assembly are elected based on population, unlike the national setup. There are 6 representatives(Senate and Assembly) in the north part of the state(Sacramento and North), 114 for south of Sac including San Francisco. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynolds_v._Sims See Aftermath...
How do you own a house while making less than $600 a week before taxes? At that income level your take home is around $450 if you're lucky after you pay for your goverment-mandated health care.
And didn't California make the minimum wage $15 recently, or are they increasing it gradually?
I was born in Hayward, and much of my family still live around the bay on both sides of the water, as well as Gilroy and Santa Cruz. I know from talking with them what the property values are like, as well as what the rent looks like. It's wildly different from your area. Before moving to Georgia, I lived in South Orange County... Trabuco Canyon and Mission Viejo specifically. Property there is insane, I used to pay $8500 per year in taxes on a 35 year old house sitting on 1/8 acre.
Now I have 3000 square feet on almost half an acre and no jets flying overhead or freeway noise, ZERO bus stops within a ten mile radius. My mortgage is less than my oldest son's rent in a 1 bedroom apartment back in California.
Rambling here.... but I think perhaps you're a bit confused about reality.
"a seriously debilitated senior citizen first being held rigidly erect, then collapsing towards the pavement, being grabbed up, thrown into a van, and then hustled away out of public view. ... such a physical collapse by the commander-in-chief throw the entire National Command Authority into question? Who present would qualify to determine the c-in-c incapable of performing her duties? Long, confused minutes would tick by while incoming missiles continued to fly at near-orbital speeds to their American targets. Until such a medical determination occurred, who in the command structure could or would assume the enormous responsibility of ordering our defense forces to respond?"
Rental rates and home sale prices are about half in Sac than they are in SF/ Santa Cruz area where my sister bought a house (Capitola) but I will go with whatever Craigslist says for the areas in question.
My mortgage is about $900 a month and the renters basically cover that so my take-home is about $2k/month after taxes. The home is nearly paid off. Prop taxes are about $2k/yr for the 1100 sf house on a 40x80 lot. (much traffic noise, many bus stops) When the 2008 recession lost me my job paying that mortgage was very, very tight, but I did manage to find another job.
Mike pays utilites at his house, which is paid off, out of his approx $350 social security. I cook nearly all our food, repair our cars. Fix all house issues. I have nearly $0 debt, mostly the house note. Our only adoption is a 3yr old Jack Russell mutt.
Another relevant item: Mike took a reverse mortgage on his house at the height of the bubble market just before the recession which was amazingly clever for a college dropout. He bought a new car, a 2007 Chevy Aveo for $10,500 from it.
I wish I could show another income stream, but I don't think occasional sales on ebay here and craigslist surpass $1000/yr. I think my trick has been managing expenses. I DIY on all things possible. Practically the only new things I buy are underwear and food.
I used to spend some time in Carmichael . . My bigger worry . .

2 dear friends are cops . . . .I've done a couple ride alongs. Sacto seemed like a war zone.
I'll be in California most this week . . . but, my dad hit it on the head when I used to live in Marina del Rey . . . "this is a great place to live if you don't have to work"
To get back to the topic at hand, it dawned on me yesterday, that there is a very real possibility that Hillary is being drugged to the hilt. At many events she is extremely up. Almost weirdly so. Seeing her talking to the press yesterday about the bombings that she chastised Trump for calling bombings, right after she called them bombings, she looked terrible. My first thought was that she looked like someone who was coming down from a drug induced high. Then I thought back to the Clinton's known recreational use of drugs back in AR. Bill did inhale, snort, and other things too. Hillary was right there with him back then. A bad drug reaction could certainly explain her 9/11 episode, and incredibly fast recovery, where they purposely avoided going to a hospital. It's very possible that she is being drugged to get up, then drugged more to come down again. Get it wrong, and you can become incapacitated, but with the right injections, get the balance back where she can smile at the cameras again a few hours later.
All of this is just speculation on my part, but I would be interested what others might think about it.
Well you sure don't want your candidate calling a bomb a bomb, right before criticizing the other candidate for calling a bomb a bomb. So simply edit out the part where your candidate calls a bomb a bomb...
My tenants complain more about the homeless people noisily going thru the recycle bins at 7AM more than they complain about the gangs. I think I painted over graffiti at the rental place once in 20 years. Fortunately the dramatic increase of housing prices has had the indirect effect of gentrification and better quality tenants/ owners.
For sure! Not to mention the Hillster seems to be almost completely out of it during that exchange. Maybe she's taking some strong sinus medicine or something to deal with her "allergies". That stuff knocks my wife for a loop, so for one time only, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.
Exodus out of CA; Most likely the same folks that came here for a good job and found they couldn't take the traffic or housing costs. If they looked somewhere else than the _upscale_ neighborhoods, they could have found a great place to live that they could afford. Seems to me all the people that came here from Texas, Colorado, Utah and Washington are starting to leave. Bye! My mortgage is well below what 90% of the folks around me pay because I have been in my house since the mid 90's. There are still bargains here, you just have to know where to look. My commute is only 40 minutes in medium traffic and half of that is on a beautiful mountain road (even more fun on the Buell).
Birther movement: Although Hillary's camp was the most vocal about it back in 2008, they did not start it, just made a bigger issue out of it and used it to their advantage.
Capitola: Not a good representation of the housing market. Very little to no good jobs, Historically a small town, more recently a beach/novelty area. Nice place to live if you don't patronize the expensive amenities near the coast.
It's more expensive to live where I am than you....you must be in a well chosen cheap place in the People's Republik. Here in the Imperial State $5 only gets you the BK & McD's special. No fries or drink.
True, if I lived a few miles away my property taxes could be almost halved. Poor choice on my part.
My question is.... Hillary is pushing hard for support from the lgb...etc. community. & I have no doubts as to her deep emotional connection.
She also has taken millions in support from foreign countries that publicly execute often by torture, gays & lesbians.
Which group is she more likely to defend?
She's more likely to follow the money. At least she will once she's had their vote, then she's used them and can go back to payback to their murderers.
& I would support an out of closet Gay or Lesbian candidate if they shared at least some of my core beliefs... but not Hillary. I'd even support a closeted candidate, understanding the problems they face, despite the real danger of blackmail.... but not Hillary. In her case her sexuality is her business & nearly the only thing I respect about her.
Unfortunately in her case it's like saying you admire one aspect of a serial killer. "Nice restored Nova. Did great bodywork & like the LS-9 install. Too bad about the trail of mutilated children."
It's North Carolina, so It's probably stupid, but give me references & your opinion.
My take is A: it's a poor reaction to Bad dictatorial decree, and B: it's been lied about so even if it was a brilliant law ( HAH! ) you've been told it's Satanic.
But I could be wrong. Please enlighten me.
Any non-idiot knows that the really lonely kid who has problems with his/her sexual nature and is trying to be the gender they're not physically born with, is not the problem in anyone's bathroom.
It's the "regular" perverts that are the problem, Male, Adult, "straight" and twisted, that want to hang out in the Girl's room.
I don't think there is any significant tiny minority kinkiness faction out there that's even close both in numbers and harm done to others.
That woman is seriously impaired . . . . note that the answer to the follow up question, about Trump, elicited the same answers (it's important know facts and support first responders) as the first question.
Great drugs.
Poor candidate.
Dems gotta be warming someone up in the bullpen . . .
Not having read or educated myself much about the law, that was the conclusion I came too early on. I should probably research things and get better informed, but I bet my opinion would not change.
It's stupid to not let gays participate in the civil and legal institution of marriage. It's stupid to tell people who are performing a religious marriage ceremony what they should believe and what they should do.
The business refusing to serve group "X" question is harder. Bigotry in the public square shouldn't be tolerated. People shouldn't be told that they have to do things they don't want to do whenever at all practical. I know I don't appreciate being told as a concealed carry holder that I can't enter a business (or entire states) unless I give up a right I believe in.
But do I want to force a business to do something they are uncomfortable doing? Lots of complications and subtleties to the issue, and the answer comes down to which flavor of imperfect you bets tolerate.
IMHO HB2 was a hastily approved North Carolina law written as a wedge issue to support Governor McCroy's reelection against his opponent Cooper, who as current attorney general refused to defend the controversial law on discriminiatory grounds. Local business interests impacted by the unexpected business boycott have formed a coalition to try to broker a soft repeal but success has been elusive to them so far.
So? I will undoubtedly agree it's stupid & political & bull crap. ... but I still don't know what it actually does.
Right after it became law & started a fire storm some right wing pundit wrote an editorial stating it was to allow local government to decide who's allowed in public johns. I didn't read the law then... just doubted both sides were right.
So I'm sure not defending a law I haven't read. Are you attacking one you haven't?
Sure, you could be right. But since the usual folk got vapors about the law I just assume they didn't read the law either, just complaints. And some of those famous complainers are usually dishonest.
So toss us a reference link & tell us WHY in your opinion it's crap. Don't be surprised if I agree.
After all the only thing Obama has done off the top of my head that I wholeheartedly agree with was dump Bill Clinton's Don't Ask Don't Tell order on the military.
Multiple friends got screwed by that executive order.
Typical Bill. Wouldn't it be great if Hillary couldn't ask me who's lipstick is on my shorts? He never stopped the gay witch hunts, he never ordered any sensible rule changes & never made the case to change the UCMJ. He just institutionalized the closet & dishonesty.
And this was from the First Horndog. You'd think he'd want a bit of freedom to get laid, eh? But no, he just extended his desire to cheat to everyone.
