She's done! Took her out for a test ride with the repair plate on it. The motor feels good, the transmission shifts like it's supposed to and makes no funny sounds.
Monday morning, I'll call Liberty Mutual and go to the Registry to make it legal, then it's, "Sayonara Kumensukmi,; Hello Hardley Ableson".
My printer died, so I have to wait until the library opens to print out the RMV-1 form so I can register and legally ride the Roadster. So I have to wait for another hour before I head out. Then, once I print out the form, I’ll get to wait in a long line at the Registry. I went by the bookstore yesterday and bought a book in anticipation of that. After I get the plate and registration, it’s off to the shop to get the bike. I bet it takes all day to get it all done. Oh well.
I think that I’ll take a short run up to Maine to see Megan and Rocco tomorrow. The bike need a shake down run and it’s something like 130 miles each way. After that, if all goes well, the Roadster should be ready to travel. If all doesn’t go well, I’ll be well and truly screwed. My MasterCard is maxed out and my bank account is pretty thin. I don’t believe that will be the case, though, so I’m not worrying about it.
My big question right now is how much is the shop going to charge me? I did most of the work on the transplant, but there’s towing from my house to the shop, Guy and Torey’s time that they put in on the bike, plus they let me use their lift and tools. I might not have enough money to go around the block, plus I’ll still be in debt if they charge me even 1/2 shop hourly rate. I hope they’re in an especially generous mood. Maybe I could work off the debt? It’s something to consider.
Anyhow, I’ll know more tonight. I’m not going to worry about possible problems; there are enough real and existing problems to keep my mind occupied. Plus, I’m getting the Roadster back! Life looks pretty damned good, right now.
Don't know about there, but in Ohio they wouldn't let me so long as the previously titled vehicle title was still in my name. If I had sold it and transferred the title, I could have transferred the plates.
It’s been a long and frustrating day, but in the end, I am the Victor. The Roadster is sitting in the garage looking regal and ready for a ride beyond the horizon. It’s insured and Registered and completely Legal. Tomorrow, I’ll ride it up to Maine to visit my daughter and son-in-law. I think that will be a shake down ride of about the right length.
If it all goes well, then I hope to be on the road to West Virginia on Thursday. I really want to make it to Mark’s Rally. I’ve been looking forward to it since last year. Seeing Mark and getting a ride from him during the “Crusty Relay” just made my desire to attend stronger. I think It’s going to happen, and I’m doing what I can to make it happen. I just hope nothing jumps out and bites me in the ass.
When I went by the shop to put the plate on the Roadster so I could start riding it, I asked Guido what I owe, and he told me that it was up to Guy and Sandra. I asked Guy and he just said that he hadn’t figured it out yet. Then I asked Sandra, and she said she didn’t know. Nobody knows nothing and they all gave me a look when I asked. I think it’s time to keep my mouth shut and wait for them to bring it up. When I tried to talk to Jimmy, he said I should just get on my bike and get the **** out of there.
They gave me the use of a lift and let me use their tools for the better part of a week when they were slammed with so much work they were weeks behind. Today, when I was there, everybody was really busy and all the lifts were in use. They went way out of their way for me, and they get annoyed when I ask about the bill.
I feel Blessed. Maybe it’s the bottle of Holy Water that Jimmy put on my bike (except that the bottle was empty). I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve such people in my life, but I hope I can pay it forward some day. Then I think of all the effort Badwebbers put in to get me and the Roadster home. I’m going to have one hell of a time paying it all forward. It should be fun, though!
To quote Mississippi (James Caan) in the movie El Dorado, “I have a Host of Friends”.
BTW, if you want to remove those goony reflectors on the fork legs, a bit of fishing line will shave them off. But, given so many people are on the F&*(tard freeway, you might want to keep them.
Bike looks GREAT. What an old-timer might call "well sorted".
I’ve figured out how I can go to West Virginia this weekend. I can do it, but it will be on a shoe string budget. I looked at Google Maps and figured out my route. Google says it’ll be 10 1/2 hours travel time. Add in a couple of hours for gas and food stops, and it’s very doable in one day. I’ll head out early Friday morning and be at the rally well before sunset. That will give me time enough to get the tent set up before dark. I was originally going to head out on Thursday and take two days to get there, but my wallet and bank account are really thin. If I don’t have to pay for meals and a campground on Thursday night, I can afford to go. It’ll be well under 1500 miles total for the trip, so I’m pretty sure that my rear tire has enough tread left. The sides will be getting most of the wear once I get on those back roads, so that will help the center last a little longer. Or somethin’.
Today, I’m going to hit the Registry and get the HP plate transferred to the Roadster and take the Corny off the road. I’m going to drop a part off at the Powder Coaters. Most of the paint peeled off, so I bead blasted it clean of paint remains and rust at the shop and now I’ll get it coated black. I don’t imagine it’ll cost much. I’ll pick it up when I get back from the rally. I’ll also go by Blue Heron and see if my order is ready. And I’m going to the Loonie Noonie. I need a meeting.
Other than that, it’s going to be a laid back day. I deserve a laid back day; the past month has been anything but. Ah, but what an adventure it’s been. My life has been anything but boring. I’ve overcome adversity, had a bunch of great people help me out, made a financially bad decision and bought a toilet of a Concours, had more great people let me use their shop and tools and worked my ass off to get the Roadster back up. Whew! What a Ride!
