First, ISIS must be crushed, no theocracy that pushes Sharia will be allowed to rule, anywhere. And never let the bad guys escape across a border to a safe space. Kill where necessary to protect innocents, but I think humiliation will kill radical jihadist's faster than murder. I think killing actually feeds that monster. Educate their daughters, empower the widows, free the oppressed. But it takes a kind of presence and commitment and presence we haven't been able to demonstrate anymore as a country. | ||

Part of the real irony in the whole thing is the fact that the French used to be the knights of western Christendom. It was the French warriors of the Holy Roman Empire who were largely responsible for beating back the Muslim hoards from the gates of Vienna. I think that it was mentioned by another member on a similar thread that had Vienna fallen, it's likely that the Renaissance would have been quelled before it ever began. Fast forward to the 21st century and now Paris is the epicenter of the Muslim takeover of Europe (well, maybe the Swedes actually have it worse but either way - they were invited in with open arms in both places). Aes - "no theocracy that pushes Sharia will be allowed to rule, anywhere" I feel that this would be an effective start, but unfortunately we're dealing with people whose minds are stuck in the 14th century. It's easy to say that this could be accomplished through a religious reformation, but what are the odds of that actually taking place without a thorough 'cleansing' of a large portion of their ranks? I'm afraid that a large majority of them would prefer death over any adjustment whatsoever to their murderous belief system. I once heard someone remark: "Islam is not a religion. It is a philosophy of world domination that masquerades as a religion to attract followers." I used to shun that notion... Until I started reading the Qu'ran myself. Now it seems that the more I learn, the more I tend to think that a replay of the crusades every few centuries is inevitable until one side completely annihilates the other. | ||

"Soft Targets" is a little rushed in spots, with some improbable bits. Not Ing's best novel, but the idea is brilliant. But we live on a planet where the government calls a terrorist attack "workplace violence"... so go figure. Ing's "Wild Country/Single Combat/Systemic Shock" trilogy is darn good. ( I think I got the order all wrong ) So is "Pulling Through". The author is an engineer, car builder, ( one was a Tyvek bodied race car that smacked the wall at the track, when a purchased suspension part failed, lost all 4 wheels and skidded hundreds of yards at over a hundred miles an hour, on it's belly... and the driver climbed out & walked away. ) and one time survivalist writer. You want to live through a nuclear war? Read his book "pulling through", Somewhere I've got his instructions on how to build a radiation detector from household stuff. It works. | ||
