Story is still evolving. I've heard varying reports on the number of gunmen, officers shot, and how many have been killed. Gut wrenching, indeed. |

Back the badge. Pray for those families who suffer loss. I hope they find that wretched murderer and make a public example of him. This anti-police travesty has got to stop. I hope they hang the gunman/men on national television. Or electrocute him on national television. Folks should be terrified of murdering cops. That's how the law is supposed to work. God bless our men in blue (or whatever color they wear). |

Now 5 dead. 11 shot. One suspect cornered in a standoff at El Centro College. One of the organizers willingly surrendered his gun to police at the urging of his brother. Nothing is a justification to riot, loot, and kill. |

This is awful. Here are some quick tips for America, in no particular order. 1) Cops have a hard job, and its hard to do any hard job perfectly. If you help them do it well, they will do it better. I you make it harder for them, they will do it worse. It doesn't matter if you make it harder for them intentionally or unintentionally. One of many mistakes a cop can make when doing a hard job wrong is shooting you. That doesn't make it OK for them to do that, and doesn't mean they shouldn't be prosecuted if they did something wrong. None of which will make you magically "un-shot". 2) The more people argue that messy grey areas equate to plain and simple racism, the more damage you do to fights against genuine racism. I'm going to call a thug a thug. Micheal Brown was, more than likely, a thug, and I will call him one. Michael Slager was, more than likely, a thug. Some people (up to and including CEO's) I have observed are also more than likely thugs, and I will call them one also. This is not a racist dog whistle. This is a reasonable categorization regarding people using intimidation and coercion with reckless disregard for others to achieve pathologically selfish ends. If you call me a racist for calling a thug a thug, you not only insult me, you insult every victim of genuine racism and diminish the works of true heroes that fought against genuine racism. 3) If you don't teach your children not to be idiots, it will take them a lot longer to not be idiots. This includes teaching them how to work at not being bigoted against any other unfamiliar physical or cultural characteristic. It also includes teaching them how not to be bigoted against law enforcement. And that getting your way by intimidating people is always offensive, and eventually often lethal. It also includes NOT letting them believe that somebody that "group X" is always their enemy. This is as true when group X is "cops" as it is when group X is "blacks" or "muslims". It also includes teaching them that when they interact with a cop, they keep their hands where the officer can see them at all times, communicate clearly and politely, and comply with all requests. If a request was inappropriate, take that to the police chief, the courts, or the ballot box. You will have the full support of myself and others, we hate bullys, no matter what color they are and uniforms they do or don't wear. 4) I get it. There is an entrenched, barely perceptible, but pervasive problem of racism. It is real, and it makes life harder for blacks. This is something we should keep working on as a country, and something we should keep improving. This is also approaching background noise, and mirrors many other entrenched, barely perceptible, but pervasive problems of bias against fat people, against women, against old people, against young people, against christians, against gays, against athiests, against conservatives, against liberals, against democrats, against republicans, and against pretty much any other subgroup when mixed with some other subgroup. Call it a real problem like it is, but don't claim its "targeted at X". It's human nature, a bad part of it we have to overcome, and it's an evil that is manifest in many different ways. Lets try and fix all of them together. (Message edited by reepicheep on July 08, 2016) (Message edited by reepicheep on July 08, 2016) |

There's some real social regression going on, and much of it appears to be engineered from the top down. We live in strange times. |

In my experience, I suspect there may be quite a few cops using "legal" drugs. Same type of drugs that are illegal for use in professional sports... go to any gym see whats what. |

Sad very sad. It'll be interesting to see how the white citizens of the great state of Texas react to this? Rally? Protest? Revolt? Burn? Or just sit in a recliner and tweet? |

I'd be OK with mandatory drug testing for cops who have the authority to employ deadly force, which would include drugs like steroids that are proven to be behavior altering. There is a privacy right for the officer as well, but that privacy right is a balance, not a trump card. |

This isn't the United States I experienced during my journey across the states. I applaud Bill's comments. I fear that the flow on effects will be that many more citizens will invoke their second amendment rights and either concealed carry or open carry and treat interactions with the police with distrust and belligerence. The immediate question is how do the police restore trust? Perhaps the chest camera is an immediate response, this coupled with a public, fully transparent inquiry into all police shootings would help. |

If I was black and in Texas I'd be extremely careful when getting pulled over. No fast movements, keep hands on steering wheel, dont reach for anything. If you weren't a target before....you might be now. |

I think that is common sense for all races in all circumstances in all states. Unfortunately there is no shortage of stupid... this is the sort of thing everyone should have thought through a LONG time ago. The first time I got pulled over, it was 1983 or something and I was a 16 year old pasty white kid in an 81 Chevette. I didn't know what to do, and got out of the car with my hand in my coat pockets. The cop took cover behind his car door, started to draw his weapon, and told me to freeze. I froze. And then I immediately recognized what a colossal dumb-ass I was being. And then I did EXACTLY what he said to do as carefully as I could. And from that moment on, I put some careful and diligent thought into how I could make the next interaction with cops as smooth as possible for everyone involved. It isn't hard. |

As as many white people get shot as black people in the commission of violent felonies while committing far less crime, I see there being no justification for the group. That said, being more racist, more violent, and more lawless than those you oppose is a poor way to get your message across. The cornered shooter was blown up by a police robot. Calls for renewed gun control are already starting |

Don't Argue With Cops. You can be right or wrong...but still be alive. If you argue...right or wrong doesn't much matter. "Dead" trumps "right", every single time. The problem is, we've bred a society with a complete lack of respect, and a complete lack of accountability. THAT is what has to change first. Respect others. Take responsibility for your own actions. Pretty simple, or so it would seem... |

Local news says a shooter in Bristol, TN killed a paper carrier and wounded 4 others, shooting from the side of a secondary highway. WHAT THE F*CK'S GOING ON, OVER?!?! Truly sad, disturbing and bewildering times. Might have to see about moving out there with Glitch and Annie... What really worries me is the overall mood and mentalities we're facing as a nation, going into a really jacked election... no telling where we'll go after this. Prayers up for the Dallas police, and for the other innocents taken down by evil. |

In a way, I can understand how it's gotten to this point. Our country has promised them so much, while simply paying them to be poor. It takes a pretty exceptional person to claw their way out of that. It's actually easier for most if they have no choice, but to fend for themselves. Then almost 8 years ago, they managed to vote in the first black President. Expectations were incredibly high. Reality has the black community doing far worse than 8 years ago. Our government has set them up to fail in countless ways, all while telling them that they are victims that need special protections and programs to find their way through life. All of the special protections and programs don't work to make the stronger though. Quite to the contrary. I'm not sure what the solution is at this point, but more of the same is likely to get you more of the same. They have gotten more of the same for generations now. |

After the "Gentle Giant" thug was shot attacking a police officer, the President gave a speech telling us cops were racist and encouraged a domestic terrorist group "BLM" to riot and take revenge for the crimes of the racist whitey. ( that Obama's Democrat Party IS the Party of the Racist Whitey, the Klu Klux Klan, and the Plantation of Ghettos of Black Votes would be ironic... if they hadn't erased those facts from schools. You have to be old enough to know this stuff. ) After the speech cops got shot by folk primed to violence by BLM. In the last few days, there were a couple of shooting of blacks by cops, in different states, one perhaps legit defense, the other perhaps panic & race fed. The President, Again, gave a speech saying cops were racist, and Again, police were shot by folk revved up by BLM. This is really simple. It's deliberate. It comes from the top. |
