I got a wild hair this morning and decided to change the color of my wheels. This took about 5 hours altogether and I think they came out pretty sweet. What say you?

That looks awesome . . . I have my summer tires on a set of black wheels I just got from Tire Rack and love the look. It looks killer with that silver. |

I'm curious how well they will hold up. I was contemplating having my Uly vinyl wrapped until I learned that it only has about a 5 year lifespan. However, vinyl wrap is fairly expensive compared to a couple of cans of Plasti Dip. |

yeah... this cost me about $10 total. Supposedly this stuff is fairly tough, but we'll see. I was amazed how smooth it came out from using rattle cans. I'm thinking my next project may be the Z1000. |

Do you wear a scarf when you drive? lol. But seriously, kinda looks British at first glance.... |

I've got a leather driving cap, and I do fancy a spot of tea when it's chilly. |

Let Vern Decide. Next rattle can should be a glossy finish. |

I've seen the video of wheels being dippe, always curious how well it holds up. Care to offer a drivers' report after a driving season? |

Absolutely, and I'll be curious to see how the edges hold up when the tires get changed. |

I "dipped" the wheels on my MX-5 about a year ago. They are holding up pretty well, but have some peeling in the lug nut holes. I understand that dropping a quarter in each hold keeps it off where the lug nut seats and it will hold up better when the wheels come off. I have had the wheels off several times since being dipped. I'm pretty sure that a tire change will be the end of the good looks though. I did three coats of the black with 2 coats of the "metalizer". It gives a nicer finish and has more of a metallic grey color to it. The finish is also glossier than the flat black.
A good friend has a son who dipped the wheels on his Speed 3 about three years ago. They stripped it off a couple weeks ago because it was starting to look bad. It took them hours because it wasn't applied thick enough. They do say to put on 4-5 good coats so that it will peel off when the time comes. |

Here's a tip: "tire shine" products will let you wipe plasti-dip clean off with a rag. |

He said he tried a couple of things claimed to help. WD-40 was one that I remember. I don't think he mentioned tire shine. He said the few things he tried only made a mess. Perhaps a tire shine product would be the answer. |

I got that from a co-worker who has dipped wheels, and at his buddy's house got some tire shine put on. He said it made it melt like nothing. I haven't tried it yet. |

I "Dipped" the plastics on my CR with great results. When I did it last summer, they had gloss, metallic, and matte clear coats to help seal the color and have the finish be whatever you want. I haven't looked into it much more because it was just a trial run to see if I liked the colors before buying and polishing the white/black plastics for my red bike. Hold up just fine, just try not to scrub too hard while washing or you can get some marks, especially if it's hot/sitting in the sun: tends to warm the Plastidip up. |
