Damn! Rick, that got the blood spray from the hit. I hope she just broke a nose. Siege engines are seriously dangerous. My buddy built a nice ballista ( yes, guess where the word Ballistic came from ) a Roman era spear thrower.
at full tension, these can throw a spear 3-4 hundred yards, no problem. Remember the scene early in "Gladiator" where a Goth is pinned to a tree, off the ground? That's from an actual period account of battle. The one above may be set up to throw rocks. The energy stored in these kinds of things, even the simple slingshot type shown in Rick's post, are astounding. Death was not uncommon when one broke under the strain.
