This may have already been addressed but... What will become of BadWeb as we continue to loss sponsors? I've been a member here for almost as long as I can remember. I disappeared for awhile. But like all good things, I couldn't stay away forever. It would be a shame if the site was to go away for lack of funds for hosting. Sorry if this has already been addressed. But I'd like to make sure we find a way to keep all this knowledge alive! Dennis BadWeb Class of 2001 |

No sweat Dennis. I'm sure if BadWeB gets in trouble, money wise, Blake will let us know, and we'll as a community keep it going. BadWeB Class of 03 |

I'm a member of a couple of other forums and the members contribute to keep them going. The generosity of Badwebbers is well above average, so I don't believe there will be a problem. |

The biggest risk would be the software going out of date and becoming unpatchable and unsupportable. At that point, you have to either freeze all the old stuff and start fresh, spend a fortune trying to move old data to the new system, or just wind it up and shut it down. |

^ Speaking of which, weren't they supposed to migrate to new software a few years ago? Badweb is pretty "unique" in its forum format. |

weren't they supposed to migrate to new software a few years ago? Nope. There was a muted uproar about switching software, but I don't think it was seriously considered. The addition of the ability to embed Youtube videos added greatly to the site's appeal... I'd contribute if it became necessary... The Grey Poupon lives on!!!! |

Regardless of opinions on how the current board software works, of which there are many, all valid... There is no easy way to move the data, or keep continuity, if we were to change forum software. |

I imagine the forum software is much like our air-cooled Buells; unconventional, not well-supported, but once you know how to work on it you'd hate to change to something else.

Be mindful . . . . for a company that started it's website when there were something like a total of 63 www. sites . . . we've had the good fortune to be on this train since it left the station. "Forums" first started coming to the attention of the masses several years after we started Badweb. When we morphed our little "reply to all" mailing list to a "forum" DISCUS was your choice. Things like Bulletin came along years later. Badweb . . like a 1967 G.T.O. . . lacks many features but has one redeeming quality . . . it works. |

Actually, just the opposite. Badweb2 did exist for a while, and was only a database import away from going live. The few "archive" sections on the bottom of the main page were from experimentation with getting them imported into the new board. |

I'd take a '67 Goat anyday over about anything else! I remember Blake and Frogs going on about the pluses and minuses... it seems the consensus was "if it aint broke, don't fix it." As long as it remains viable for Blake and the other principal operators, let it be. For posterity, this site is invaluable for those who love Buell. |

As far as the current program being out dated or non functional.....so what? I cannot see the time and expense of carrying, merging, adapting, or storing the past into a new site venture. It is old baggage. Sure cool stuff but history. Leave in it an archived bag. That book is written, and read, leave it on the shelf. If BadWeB has to fire up anew in a new format or whatever you call it, start from scratch. New page. BadWeB is a community of people.....not bits and bites. If the history that is logged here goes away, just ask a tuber owner for help and a new copy of updated information is made. Just ask several of us about your Uly problem and we are glad to lay it out again. I don't see it as that big of a deal to start anew. The history will always be in the old site. If it can be accessed when needed or if interested parties want to look that should do. It seems like a lot of work to make all new threads and titles and but I'd bet it would be a lot easier than trying to carry an old boat on your back while doing it. Am I totally unknowing, or is it the future of the people of BadWeb that matters? My theory is that this why people buy new cars once in a while. The old shit is worn out, beat down, and out dated. So why keep the old car out in the driveway like you are going to use it after the new one has come in? |

I'd be willing to chip in money to get a new site with wild and crazy features like 'quote' Or a board where just because something gets to the second page doesnt mean it is stuck in that lost place forever. This site has great people with a wealth of knowledge, but the actual forum is terrible. |

Kind of like having your starter go tits up in Suches and having an army of Badwebbers swarm to help get it fixed.

One of the things he said about us, "you know, I've not seen this kind of comradery among people in a long long time" We come together when the going gets rough, I'm living proof. That's why I don't think we're in any sort of real trouble. If it came down to it we could archive this board, make it searchable, and carry on with another software. (I like blue for quotes... ) |

LOL. That's one feature that is probably better here than anywhere. Highlight what you want to quote, right click "copy", type \quote{, paste in what you copied }. (Message edited by reepicheep on April 07, 2016) |

WELL!! Defecate fire and save the matches. I didn't know that one When I read the title, I was hoping the people of BadWeb were planning to secede from the union and start our own state. |

To be blunt, I can't imagine that BadWeb costs much money to keep running. It doesn't get a ton of traffic and the forum software is pretty rudimentary, so it presumably doesn't require much server hardware or bandwidth, which helps keep costs modest. Presumably the forum software itself is a perpetual license, meaning that there's no recurring fees and the only expense is if the forum ever needs to be updated. Worst case, I have 100Mbit synchronous fiber and spare server hardware at my office (we are an IT MSP) so if BadWeb ever needs a place to live, it can reside here. |

The cost is support. Blake doesn't want to be a discuss expert, DBA, patch manager, sysadmin, and 2am troubleshooter. The hosting isn't cheap, but what he is really getting is "Discuss as a service" with 24x7 support, not just ping power and pipe. And by those standards, it is cheap for what we get, but it isn't cheap. I don't know the details, but I expect Blake could easily have an 1190SX sitting in his garage for less than he has paid out of pocket to keep this forum online. |

"LOL. That's one feature that is probably better here than anywhere. Highlight what you want to quote, right click "copy", type quote:, paste in what you copied
. " Yes, because its SO much easier than just clicking a button marked "quote" How is that better than a quote button? What does it do better than the basic quote button? |

You're right. Someone did say that. So you'd prefer a button over doing a copy/paste of the exact words you want to quote. So; you push a quote button. Then you have to delete all the irrelevent material in the post you're quoting. That's one way. This way, you highlight the material you want to quote and you have choices on how you can present it. you can put it up as:
quote:No, someone DID say it was better...see above
or No, someone DID say it was better...see above or No, someone DID say it was better...see above or... Which way is better is like asking which engine configuration is better? An inline four or a V twin? Both ways have their advantages and both have their weaknesses. It ain't that big a deal. |
