The ECМ war is alive and well. RUSSIA USED A 35 year old plane to disable and 'Brick' the USS Donald Cook. Good times, we used to do it to their 'fishing trawlers' all the time. Today's Purple Penguins and hashtag hereos are going to need a bigger safe space if EMP goes large scale (And it is entirely too easy to take things off line in an ever increasing world of IoT ) |

Bring it, baby! I love it! Brings back memories of my early-60s ham radio days (WA6UXL), with the three RCA 6146s casting a blue glow in my late-night bedroom every time the key went down...275 watts on CW, baby! --Doc} |

Ah, the warm glow.... Brings to mind the KWM-2As on my workbench as a young Airman. There was an accompanying/optional linear amp, but the terminology is lost to memory. Tubes generally work fine, unless you ask them to operate with sketchy power, in an environmentally unfriendly, mobile environment. Back in the day, I'd have said they were far more fragile and delicate than people. Now, subjected to the effects of an effective EMP attack, I think the people are the likeliest point of failure. |

The real issue is two fold. One. The power grid acts as an antenna and all the relays and transformers would fry. Minimum year to get replacements..... assuming you don't need them. If the grid is down so are the factories. And while everyone is screaming for power the stuff in inventory MUST be used to get power to those factories. Or the lights won't come back on. Ever. Meanwhile the average city has three days of food. All the refrigerated & frozen stuff will be bad in about that same time. Apocalypse. Riots. Looting. The Burning. Two.... SCADA devices run the railroad, the grid, your car, everything. You need manual work around s just to get the transformer factories going and the first grid parts out to the rest of the country. Compared to those two serious problems, the internet being down is trivial. Although I anticipate a lot of teens and twenty somethings suicides just from that. Every car & truck with computer control engines being down is a close third. My VW & Dodge caravan both are very computer dependent. The Cyclone ignition might survive. It's the unspoken reason I'm looking hard at the early Ram diesels. Almost completely mechanical. The spoken reason is how easy they are to work on and the lack of expensive obsolete computers. There are some model cars...iirc... '96 Mercedes 12 cylinder for example, you can get pretty cheap. If they die you walk away. The multiple obsolete no longer in production computers cost more to fix than the car does. By a lot. |

one of those folks who are "extremely right wing" over on duramaxforum is building an EMP resistant 12 valve cummins as a bug-out vehicle. He (is? was?) a rotary wing pilot and has been involved with EMP shielding for aircraft. Wish I had this kind of free time. (and bank account)

I Want That just because! I Want One. Not a prepper by any means, but Toy!!!! Second stage bug out vehicle is a decent mountain bike. Bug out bags can be the panniers/backpack. Will watch vid, but level of broken depends on a number of factors. Like a Coronal Mass Ejection, disaster comes in shades. Long wire stuff gets hit by magnetic field movement. Short wire stuff gets hurt with large electron flux. Until such a thing happens it's impossible to predict exactly how ruined your tech is. But even optimistic estimates say a well placed EMP strike will kill millions. SCADA & Grid alone equals logistic stoppage beyond immediate solution. |

Would it be effective to just keep a spare ECM in a protective container? |

I can't find the info I previously read about what types of electronics are vulnerable to EMP, but if IIRC, depending on the magnitude of the EMP forces at your location, it's mostly fine wiring that is vulnerable. Circuit boards, sensors, etc. So I think you'd have to keep a spare of just about all electronic components on your engine, ECM, trans, and TCM. In something like this (faraday cage):

Faraday cage just means a seamless/sealed electrically conductive (metal) envelope, it could be metal screen or aluminum foil, that is sealed against electromagnetic energy. The window of your microwave oven and the seal around the door opening are parts of the Faraday cage that keeps the 5GHz electromagnetic energy inside. So if you want to protect something from EMP, store it in an old microwave. |

He (is? was?) a rotary wing pilot and has been involved with EMP shielding for aircraft. Wish I had this kind of free time. It'd be pretty easy to build an EMP-proof diesel-powered vehicle. You just need something with an old-tech diesel engine with a mechanical fuel shut off and a compressed air or explosive cartridge starter. |

What's really vunlerable to EMP are the internal junctions / switches in semiconductors. They are just a few atoms wide, and while they have a crunchy protected outside (electrically), an EMP goes straight to the heart and kills stuff. Like getting electrocuted. Across you skin, you can take a heck of a shot and walk away (miserable). 15mA across your heart and you are a dead man (less power than is required to light up an LED well). |

I wrote the comment in about 38 seconds. How long is the video? If I have to watch a video to learn something, it's credibility is already suspect. That's not to say its wrong, it's just to say it is more likely to be wrong. Watching a video to learn is like making the whole Interstate drive at 15 MPH because somebody up front is travelling on a bicycle. |

...and would be interested in your providing some support for the "all the relays and transformers would fry." That would be a large CME event, Solar flare, beyond what's been considered normal for the history of people stringing wires about. Plenty of pop-sci sensationalist articles about...http://www.livescience.com/38848-emp-solar-storm-d anger.html Some facts on a previous burp from Olde Sol. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859 A "wrecks everything" Solar event is rare. But happens. The press gets excited every solar cycle. In the category of "going to happen. Time unknown." The Nuke scenario is, IIRC much less likely to blow big stuff, but more likely to fry micro stuff. The last test of a exostratospheric nuke was.... 1962? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_electromagne tic_pulse#Starfish_Prime Most of the stuff we use everyday didn't even exist then. How hyped the problem is is... a good question. We won't know for sure how bad or where how bad, until it happens. |

There is a building at the Army Research Lab in Maryland that housed the Aurora pulsed radiation machine during the 70's and 80's that allowed the testing of electronics against a simulated EMP. With this capability the military was able to develop and test "hardened" electronic components, originally, for nuclear warheads, and later, for satellites and other military equipment. There is a plaque on the building that states the work that went on in that building contributed to the end of the Cold War. As it was told to me, at the time, the Soviet Union had no such machine and no way of testing their equipment against EMP and thus were at a disadvantage. Supposedly, President Reagan took Gorbachev to this facility and others and when the tour was finished Gobachev knew the Soviet Union was finished. The Strategic Defense Initiative really did win the Cold War. |

Finally watched the video. And learned something. Now all I need to do is build a hobbit hole (complete with 6-bay garage) My wife has family who are totally off the grid up in the mountains here in western Washington. Not because they're preppers, just because they're capable folk who wanted to live up in the mountains, and the grid just doesn't run that deep into the mountains. They run propane lights and freezers. They have a primary and backup generator (gas and diesel) that they run for a little while each night, to pump water up to the topside pressurized tank, so they have water even when the generator isn't running. And watch TV, do laundry, etc. They've got propane for cooking but also a giant cast iron wood burning stove. They stockpile fuel - not for EMP, but because the roads are impassable at times in winter. And they run a garden each spring and summer down in the bottoms. Even though he's in his late 70s, her grandpa is still an avid hunter. Needless to say, he and his family will be part of the 10% that will not be killed off by (or even notice?) EMP. |

There's a good book, 'One Second After' and it's sequel 'One Year After', that is a reasonably realistic look at this situation. I can't remember where they did it, but they tested a bunch of cars in a EM field generator and it killed the PCM, but they would still crank and other functions worked as far as they could tell, but the computer was dead. I'd bet anything pre-PCM would be okay with a spare ignition module, just in case. I just sold my DR650 to a guy on advrider.com that's a prepper in Panama. His uncle, also a prepper came down from the Finger Lakes region of NY to pick it up for him. I was a little under the weather at the time and he blamed it on the flu vaccine. His parting advice was to move out of the city and stock up on food and ammo. |
