I haven't started the bike for a couple of weeks since changing the oil in both holes. I have a new set of spark plugs gapped and ready for copper anti-sieze. The bike is in an unheated garage. Metal is probably ten degrees. Outside of the general discomfort of the cold on me, Is it better for the XB to change the plugs when it is warmer, or is the cold metal fine with such an adventure? |

I've changed plugs in snowmobiles countless times in freezing cold weather with no ill-effects. I don't think it matters. |

...+1 to using copper anti seize....but sparingly on the threads....need a good ground path..LT |

I try to just put it in the first three threads on the plug. I don't want it in the chamber either. Thanks for the "good to go" guys. |

Why the hell would you want to be changing plugs when it is ten degrees in your garage? |

This is a question that comes to my mind as well. Like all of those valve adjustments/clearance checks say "engine cold" How cold? like not even a range of temperatures. Just not hot?? How long does the engine have to be not running to be considered "cool"? |

My old Shovelhead would foul spark plugs whenever the temp fell below 20° F. I kept a bunch of spark plugs along with a ratchet and socket on a little table beside the bike out in the garage so I could change one quickly. it would only foul plugs on the first start of the day. Once it was running in the morning, I wouldn't have to worry until the next morning. I rode that bike as my only transportation through the winter of 1981-82. That Superglide was the best bike I've ever ridden in snow. It would go when nothing else on the road would. |

I would wait until it's not 10 degrees... I've had my Triumph for almost a month and she has 40 miles on her... |

Considering his local weather, it's more like wait until it is 10 degrees! Should be by tomorrow. |

I don't want to waste warm weather on maintenance. I have almost parked the bike this winter. Looks like I'll be riding next Tuesday. |

I took the Uly out last week. All was good until the last leg of the day. Tried to pull out on ice and fell over. No blood no foul, but then I had to pick her up.. sore for a couple of days. It was worth it. Z |

Zack, I hope you're feeling better. I started looking at old threads on higher output coils and have come to the conclusion that for street riding it would not be much help for me. The better spending of my money looks to be on Magnecor 2557 wires. I am waiting on them to come in. I'll change out the plugs at the same time that the wires are swapped. A pair of DCPR9EIX 2316 Iridium NGK plugs Gapped to .030" and with indexing line drawn on the insulator are sitting beside me. Need to pick up some dielectric grease for the wire boot installing. I will also look at the clearance on the wires while in there. One possible thing that may be done is using spacers and longer bolts to change the path of the wires by moving the coil. I have an electric heater on low under a tarp that is over the bike. Tires are elevated 1/4" above the concrete during this. It is looking like the best weather in a while will hit on the week of March 13th. Should be plenty of rain then too. |
