So I'm in the market for a new helmet. I went and looked at a few yesterday and would like to pull the trigger on something soon. Budget is <$600. I'm looking for a quiet and lightweight helmet. I liked the Shoei RF1200 the most out of all the helmets that I saw and tried on. I was hoping to have Bluetooth built in but the saleman said that a Bluetooth helmet would not sync up with my wife's Scala and that if I wanted to communicate with her while riding that she would need the same MFG helmet. Bummer. I also wanted a built in sun visor like on my Scorpion EXO 1000 but I might just go with a transition visor. The $160 price tag on the visor stings a little though. What's out there and what do you guys have? | ||

Rf1200, white. Sharpie makes paint markers if you want to decorate it. I added blue toothed. I like it's weight, small profile, price for a plain color is nice. Visor is crazy easy to change out. | ||

I had a ~$200ish BT Vega helmet. In simple terms, it sucked but I do miss the flip down internal sun visor. BT worked decently but sometimes I got this chirp that was ear piercing. I have a long narrow head shape so my options were limited if I wanted something that actually fit. I got an arai signet q and not sure I could ever go back to a cheap helmet. Got mine locally at CycleGear b/c of the 7 day return/swap policy. Walked around the store for 3 hours wearing different helmets before finally making a decision. Probably would have been quicker if not for the price. I see a few of them on clearance for 535-600, including a few at Revzilla. The Sedici helmets were nice for the 200 price point but still plastic shell. My next choice was going to be a Scorpion composite if I could find one to fit my head. Shoei are for more neutral round head shapes so didn't work out for me. There was 1 that was a close fit but Arai was just better fit for me. I've read the Schuberth C3 modular is actually the quietest b/c the flip up allows the neck area to be a tighter fit. Round to neutral fit so if Shoei fits, this one probably will too. On sale now at revzilla for $329 so that leaves you enough for a com system. | ||

Even though I can get dealer pricing from Lemans, I can often get a better deal as just a normal customer at Motorcyclegear.com. They're great folks to deal with, and their pricing on clearance and discontinued items can be REALLY good. They have the HJC RPHA 10 helmets on sale now, http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/closeouts/hel mets/almost_free!/rpha_10_halcyon_helmet.html. My last 4 helmets have been HJC and I like them. But the RPHA 10 isn't a power ranger visor helmet. | ||

Jim; make sure the helmet fits right before you buy it. My ex and I had different head shapes, and the helmets that I loved, she didn't care for. and the opposite was also true. For me, the best fitting helmet I've ever worn is the Schuberth C3. I fell in love the first time I tried one on. Terri, on the other hand didn't like the fit one bit. It's too late for this year, but one thing that I enjoy doing is going to the big IMS show at the Javitts Center in New York. I try on the various helmets until I find the one that fits best. Then I make a note of the specific Make, model and size. When I get home, I can look on the internet and find the best deal. | ||

Well I'm pulling the trigger on a Shoei Mystify RF1200 with the transition visor. The local Cycle Gear has them for $380 down from $530. Plus they will price match Revzilla on the transition visor so I'll save another $17 on the visor. Not a bad deal, I get the helmet and transition visor for the MSRP price of the helmet. | ||

Well crap. i guess this will be my year for helmet shopping also. Hard to believe that I possess eight helmets and every damn one of them has now passed the ten year mark.....thankfully without damage I might add. Not riding so much anymore, but Corvette autocross sanctioned by National Corvette Club Council and SCCA require ten years or less.....and they check them every time out during tech inspections. I'd like to find an open face with a couple of bars across the front, kind of like a football helmet. Don't need comm system or face shields. Starting search soon. | ||

Just an FYI regarding radios, Sena claims to be compatible with Scala units. I recently got a Sena that is designed specifically for my new Shoei, it is really nice so far, but I haven't tried pairing it up with my Scalas to confirm how good they work together. | ||

Brad; $888 Au is roughly $620 US. That's still a pretty hefty price for a helmet, but it's not as bad as it first looks. Vern; have you tried a motocross type helmet? | ||

Only con I have so far is that it doesn't have an easy to detach unit like my Scala G4/G9, so for charging I either have to bring the helmet inside or I have to figure out running a USB cable to where I store my helmets. | ||

Ok so I picked up the Shoei RF1200 Mystify with the transition visor for $560 out the door. Not a bad deal. I'm pretty psyched about my new purchase. While the salesman was installing my transition visor he was telling me about the Sena units and the newly released 10S. Sounded like a good deal for $220 out the door but once he said he'd install it too....... well........ I told him to throw it on the helmet while he was at it. | ||

I have an AGV K4 EVO I got for mile-sprints b/c my Nolan didn't pass tech. Need ECE or Snell, Nolan was only DOT. I like the AGV, it's lighter and quieter than my modular Nolan. The Iridium face-shield was 1/3 the price of the helmet tho - 80 bucks wholesale... When I take it off it goes in its bag and hangs away from danger. Revzilla has them under 200 in close-out Z | ||

It had been so long since I bought a new helmet, I worry about this one getting it's first scratch. I put it in the Shoei bag inside another helmet bag at work. Then wrap it in my jacket. I hate having a new helmet when not riding. I need a second new helmet so it will be my old helmet. | ||

Yeah I stayed within budget for the helmet and the visor but the Sena was too good of a deal to pass up. I love how it fits perfectly inside the Shoei and the sound on it is great. Hopefully it stays above 30 tomorrow so I can go for a ride and give the system a road test. Here's what the new lid looks like.  | ||

So I took the S1 (which is starting to be my favorite Buell) out for a nice ride yesterday with the new lid. Ride report: Helmet: all I can say is wow. This helmet is sooo quiet, it's amazing. Absolutely no wind noise riding around town. Very lightweight compared to my Icon and Scorpion helmet. Transition Visor: Very cool product. No need to carry around an extra visor anymore. It was a bright day with a lot of overcast yesterday. The visor produced a light tint that was perfect for the lighting conditions of the day. When the sun broke out for a few minutes the visor became a dark smoke tint. Very happy with the initial ride. Sena 10S: The sound quality is night and day as compared with my Scala unit. Matched with the quietness of the RF1200 I could turn the music way down and could still hear my tunes, something I could never do with my Scala. On my Scala I would need to keep it turn all the way up and even then I wouldn't be able to hear the music sometimes, especially on the highway. Overall I am totally happy with the new purchase. The Sena unit was something I wasn't planning on buying and it blew my budget by a few hundred bucks but WTF, it was way worth it. |
