Just got back in from the USPS... there's a card and stuff en route now. I made sure to maximize the funnin', despite my lack of $$$ and not being the Donald. (Thank Gawwd for that!)
I was just up in TC this weekend. In fact I got home less than an hour ago. Sunday there was a fundraiser put together by his boss at the local VFW hall. They had an incredible turn out. Zane was in high demand, and I barely got to say hello. His wife, Kim did find me and specifically wanted to thank those who contributed from our little corner of the world. The local paper has a nice bit written about the fund raiser... Hundreds attend benefit dinner to support a man trying to beat cancer
Zane is actually looking good and is in good spirits, but he has lost a good deal of weight. He's always been a good sized, strong guy who could toss building materials around like Lego blocks. No doubt that strength is a big plus, but he sure looks worse than the guy I've known. It turns out that the biopsy that the local hospital took started an infection that they failed to diagnose. His first trip to Mayo Clinic was a bust because they wouldn't start the chemo that week due to the infection. Chemo was started a week later. Meanwhile they put him on antibiotics that had to be injected twice a day at the hospital. They had a port left in him to make the injections a bit easier, but that doesn't sound fun either. He was at the hospital on Saturday, and they finally declared his infection gone, and took the port out. He's wanting to go back to work, but the Docs won't OK it yet, and his boss won't let him back without the Docs OK. I've got to say that's a good thing.
The long term prognosis is still a bit up in the air. The Docs are a bit confused because they have not been able to find a specific tumor that is the source of the cancer cells in the GI tract lining. I'm really not clear if that's s good or bad thing. It does sound like this cancer is usually manageable though, so that much is good news. I have no clue what's going to be involved in management of the though. Short term, he will continue with Chemo treatments every other week. I'm not sure how long that will go on either.
Brad, Kim did mention something that came in the mail. Sorry I didn't get to hear any details. We were having our conversation very near the entrance to the VFW hall, and it was interrupted many times by well wishers, so conversation was sometimes lacking continuity. She did say that they've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of help from so many people. In a world where you hear so much bad news, it is nice to see something like this to help a family in need.
