I have an unusual situation. I have a LARGE (20 pounds) tortoise that free roams the back yard in the summer, but I need to bring him in this winter. I have a spare bedroom that I've torn the carpet out of, so it's just the subfloor now. I need to seal this so that any pet 'messes' don't get absorbed into the wood. Are there any coatings? Would I be better off just buying some linoleum for the whole room?

He doesn't hibernate?
The two I have, do not eliminate during hibernation...

Vinyl flooring would probably be easiest.

Check out rolls on clearance or remnants. You could probably do the whole room over a couple of times for pennies a square foot. I'm sure the tortoise doesn't care about making a fashion statement.

Teeps, he's a sulcata, they're desert tortoises and, as far as i can tell, don't hibernate. What kind do you have?

Vinyl flooring would probably be best. No seams or they can leak.
You will likely be ripping it out in spring because I think it will too absorb some of the odors (should protect the sub floor though.

We have gopher tortoises here in FL and they are fun to watch, especially when they are digging themselves in. I think there are 3 around our house at the moment (after my puppy got 1 of them).

First thing I would do is put down some heavy duty plastic (probably 6 mil) and run it up the walls a few inches. Then lay the vinyl flooring over that.

They are both desert tortoises of the US.
They tuck in for the winter starting in Late October, though last year they were out until the end of November.
They awake some time in March, it all depends on ambient temperatures.
During that time they do not eat, drink or eliminate.
If you keep them warm they will stay awake year round.

Your's is from Africa according to wiki, so yeah, his kind probably don't need or want to hibernate.

I see you're feeding him tortoise ice cream! Mine love it too! But, it's not good to feed that as a staple.

Very cool.

I like the idea of the 6 mil plastic under the vinyl.

I know I've seen dog pee soak into vinyl flooring and it had to be discarded.
Definitely don't want that happening.

Teeps, he gets free range of the back yard with all the succulent stuff he can eat! So this was a treat.

10/4.
Tortoise ice cream!
Mine like Hibiscus flowers and leaves almost as much as a good head of lettuce.

I haven't tried Hibicus, but clover and dandelions are his pizza.

Well, if he likes dandelions; he'll probably like Hibiscus too, also try rose flowers.

One year I seeded one side of the yard with mixed wild flowers; neither tortoise ate a single one!
