Where did you get the Ventura rack from Jim?

I used a 45L Ventura on my CityX- it did very well, just looked a little goony. IIRC I could siamese another identical bag if I had to carry THAT much junk. (A few times going down to Suches, kinda wish I'd have had that option...)

Just looked at Ventura's site, they've upgraded about everything I remember.

Everybody's garage always looks cleaner, better lit, has less clutter, and more fun stuff in it than mine.

you should have seen it before the Buell came home.
I had to do some serious house cleaning to get it in the garage.

I have all the racks sans the box-top rack, also a Euro-Rally bag. You can fit a metric shit-ton of stuff in that bag.

Rode into work today for the first time.
The old girl does not like to go into neutral.
BUT! It only has 2100 miles under its belt.
Do any of you thing it will improve with mileage?

I sure did miss the torque

^ Yea, 2100 miles is pretty "green" for a transmission, especially in a tuber. It wouldn't hurt to check the primary adjustment and the clutch adjustment in the meantime though.

And run the formula+ synthetic transmission fluid. The tuber transmissions were super sensitive to both fluid type and clutch and tensioner adjustment.

Doing it all right won't make it feel as good as an XB transmission, but it will make it only minorly annoyingly worse.

If you can find the Banke shifter bits, those are a really nice upgrade over stock as well, but they are hard to come by and pricey when you find them.

And you probably know, but run your belt scary loose (I adjusted it so when seated on the bike I could reach down and lift it to just barely contact the swingarm with light hand pressure).

All I can tell you about the two new Buell XB transmissions I have had, and the 2,300 mile used Blast, is that in all of them, using normal oil change intervals, when they hit 8,000 miles they simply smoothed out. They became easier to shift, up and down, and easier to find neutral, sitting or moving.

I would expect the same from your tuber if it were mine.

There was an upgrade factory shortlink shifter kit available, to replace the sloppy long arm one. Dave Stueve sold me one for my M2 back in the day. Much improved the shift.

When I brought it home I changed the oil in both holes to Amsoil 20/50

What is this formula+ synthetic transmission fluid of which you speak

I will need to check the belt. I just marked the swing arm and put back where I found it when I put new tires on.

The Amsoil is good stuff, but they can't put particular modifiers into it because while they work really well, if they ever got into a combustion chamber, they would do really bad things.

So if you make a specific transmission only oil for vehicles that use separate fluids, you can make a better oil.

Sport Trans was the was the old Harley Davidson official sportster transmission fluid. Formula+ is the replacement synthetic Harley Davidson fluid. It's introduction let them change the clutch on newer models, so every dealer should have it on the shelf.

(My apologies if I have the names wrong, it's been a while since I had to buy some, it has a 10,000 mile life).

Mobil 1 gear oil will make your transmission shift better, but it also attacks the stator, so don't use that stuff.

The Formula + is full synthetic, has the special transmission additives, and is compatible with the HD stators.

+1 on the Formula+. I tried Amsoil 20W-50 in my Uly transmission for one change but switched back to Formula+ for the next one. It worked well in my S3 too.

pic of that upgrade would be nice too...

I just got back from my "lunch break". I rode to the local HD Dealer and picked up 2 quarts. I plan to change it out and ride a 100 miles or so to flush the Amsoil out and replace it again.

I have to say... This bike sure does like 80 mph.

I believe the short shift kit was stock from mid 2001 or maybe early 2002 onward. It does help, but the banke stuff is nicer and helps more.

IIRC, the pre-2001 tubers all had the "boomerang" shifter like this:

2001 and 2002's had a shorter shifter lever and linkage. This was available as a retrofit kit from Buell. It looked like this:

I think this is the kit they're talking about. My 2000 S3 (which I bought pre-wrecked) was missing the shifter linkage so I bought the upgrade kit to repair it. I even found the part number (at the x1files.com): "New unit 49092-01Y (or #49074-01Y for M2 and S3/T) is available as a replacement kit for $99.95." I assume the first P/N is for the X1.

I'm pretty sure I've read a post by Al Lighton in which he said the only problem with the boomerang shifter is that it uses plastic bushings which allow quite a bit of slop in the shifter lever. I believe American Sport Bike still sells replacement bronze bushings that are supposed to be a big improvement.

I've had a 2001 M2 and my current 2002 S3T which both had/have the linkage pictured in the second image.I found the "short linkage" to be harder to shift and find neutral than on the S2's and S1's with the long arm I've owned. The best was the S1W that had dare I say it,almost Japanese shift quality.I can't believe I just made that staetment about an HD manufactured transmission.

I was hoping ya'll knew of some special linkage that would be a fix for what I don't like about what I have.

^ Mike- one mod I made to the "new" style shifter was this, from the X1 files. It seemed to help a little.

quote:

The 2001 shift is a vast improvement but some might find it harder to up shift than down shift. The problem is the length of the shift linkage requires the linkage coming out of the transmission to be pointing almost straight down when properly adjusted causing a reduction in leverage. This problem can be greatly reduced with addition of a slightly modified threaded extension for less then a dollar. Any hardware store sells threaded extensions used to connect thread rod. The smallest size is the correct length need to extend the shift linkage however you’ll have to increase the thread size to a 10/32. You’ll also need to cut the head off a 5/8” 10/32 screw to secure the extension. Use the screw to double nut lock the extension into the linkage and screw the universal into the other end, with the lock nut. Next move the shift linkage to one spline tool down from a 90-degree angle and reassemble the shifter. A little trial and error will get you the best angle and you’ll probably find very little exposed 10/32 threads unlike before. The throw will be a tiny bit longer but much easier and the linkage will be much stronger overall.

The new style linkage in the photo above doesn't need this mod, but for many bikes the angle between the vertical link and the arm sticking out of the transmission is much sharper and it makes sense that reducing this angle would give the lever a little more leverage, reducing the effort.

Just cobbled together the "newer" style shorter shift setup with used bits and pieces off ebay. Much cleaner shifting than the old boomerang. Best improvement to old girl.

Well.... got about half way home today and noticed the left saddlebag was hanging at a weird angle.

Stopped to have a look and one of the tabs had broken off.
Time to come up with some backyard engineering

I converted one of my old tubers to the new style shifter and in my opinion it didn't work as well. harder to shift, took more 'pressure'. one of them I put the brass bushing kit in to tighten the boomerang up, but it still really wasn't better in the real world. keep that part stock : )

and oh yeah, they really plane out at 80-85 mph!!
