Well.... its 2000 S3 with 2050 miles on the clock!... and I am the PROUD second owner.
I have missed my Buells since they went down the road to new owners. When HD torpedoed Buell I got a serious case of FU too.... and sold off all my Buell bikes and most of my Buell swag. I was in waiting for EBR to come out with the AX... but with all the crap that went down with Hero, it looks like that itch wont get scratched for some time.
During the WV Buell Rally I rode a Triumph Tiger, Yamaha FJR, EBR 1190SX.... and then I made the mistake of riding Nukeblue's S3. Out of all the bikes it was by far the funniest for me to ride. I made the second mistake when I got home and started looking on Craigslist. The Green Manalishi was waiting for me in Indianapolis. A couple of phone calls and texts later...
I HATE you, man... I mean, I LOVE you man. Color me jealous. I tried to con Shawn out of that canary yellow bike, even trade for my '02 Sprint, fancily painted by Vern even.
He laughed at me. Mark, can't think of a better guy to have that bike, and the timing is perfect.
I got a set of narrow lids that I'm entertaining unloading - that are ironically Amazon Green - but they are the early S3 saddlebag style. Technically it won't be correct, but I'll be going with the later style S3 bags on my 1998 S3T Defender.
Not sure what I have up for grabs with respect to inners. I'd planned on keeping my Defenders original bags lids and inners for posterity or if I ever wanted to go back to 100% original.
I'll have to inventory what all I got tomorrow.
However, if you find something before then - JUMP on 'em! 1313
Very nice Mark - glad to have you back in the madness! Bags - which I see you're already discovering - are rare. If you find even MOST of a set, or a set that's trashed...grab whatever pieces you can.
I also want to say someone made soft bags, that would work with the factory brackets. And, don't forget the topcase/top rack that Damnut had. Wish there was something like that for an S2...might have to alter my spare Uly top rack to fit the S2 sometime....
You should check with a dealer to see if the recalls have been done- IIRC, there are 2 or 3: Something regarding the fuel tank vent (?), something about the throttle and/or cables, and the rear shock. I wonder if HD is still supporting them after 15 years?
The 2000 model has the old style front muffler hanger and the thin primary shoe that's known to break if you run the bike hard. Those would be good owner upgrades.
If you can live with soft saddlebags, the Cortech's work nicely (note what motorcycle they're installed on in the catalog picture):
Mark, get a hold of these guys. I remember them having S3 bags, it even mentions them at the top of the page. They have S2 saddlebags for sale for sure but that doesn't help you.
If you do find a set, make sure you reinforce the inside bag with fiberglass. There are a couple of threads about it here on Badweb, one by Al at American Sport Bike.
You can't jack a tuber using the muffler, or at least you're not supposed to.
Cyclelift made a rear stand that supports the bike by the rider's footpegs if you can still find one. They are NLA new. You use that to support the bike at the rear and a bottle jack under the front shock mount to get both wheels off the ground. Here's a pic of one supporting an M2:
Apparently a work-around is to use an auto jack stand under each footpeg mount in the same way. You'll probably need some help to get it off the rear wheel and onto the stands.
^ IIRC, the big oil filter is the same as a Fram PH7 and equivalent filters which was common to many Fords and Chryslers way back when. You can run 3 quarts of oil (vice 2.5) if you use the big filter.
