Be careful with the colchisine. My doc offered it as a possible med, but I declined.
I had fought symptoms on and off for several years, taking steroids when I had a flare, usually the big toe.
The last flare I had was both heels at the same time. I could not walk, even with crutches. Took 14 days of steroids and pain killers to get over it.
The allopurinol really whacked my digestive system until I got used to it. At 100 mg every morning, I'm well controlled as long as I stay away from processed meat and seafood. I on occasion get a stiff toe, but it clears up overnight.
Eating pineapple helps, tart cherry juice helps, staying well hydrated helps, keeping your feet toasty warm helps. I sleep in thick socks.
Mine is hereditary, something passed on from Ye Olde ancestors from the emerald isle. Gramps had such damaged large toe joints, he cut his boots to make room, I swear they were the size of walnuts.
I wouldn't wish gout on my worst enemy. Broken bones don't hurt that bad.
I am glad you are ok. I've been out of the loop here. I am well. The Piglet is sick and after more money than I care to disclose, I hope to have her fixed soon. I'll never forget how I was so ill one summer I only made it to one afternoon of Homecoming. You came running up to me so excited to see me, it really made my day. Hope you are back to your old self soon!
So good to hear friendly voices the support, from all over, has meant more than you can possibly know.
Life......once again......is changing and that's okay.
I go in to see the surgeon on Thursday to get staples removed from 4 incisions and to be evaluated going forward. Not until I was released did I learn the danger I'd been in. I just returned from a 3 mile .... Very light ...4.5 mph ....jaunt through a very crowded Central Park and did 30 minutes of free weights. I took the 16# weight loss, whilst laid up, as a " head start from a higher power" and am getting myself back into 10k shape. Looking at retirement ....I've little interest in retiring overweight and sick.
I'll be writing more about a powerful experience that occurred while I was hospitalized.
We are all so very fortunate and too infrequently do we count our blessings.
Good news Court. I had my appendix leak on the operating table when they were getting ready to take it out. If they had started 30 minutes later I would have liked died. AS it was I spent two weeks in the hospital. I was 12 and still remember how terribly sick I was for those two weeks. You did indeed dodge a bullet. Get well buddy!
Court, I've been "out of pocket" for a bit and totally missed this thread. Real sorry to hear of your trials but very happy to hear the corner has been turned and things are looking good. The same thing happened to my brother-in-law, he was sick for days and finally went to the Dr. His appendix had burst, he too was hours away from cashing it all in. Scary stuff for sure. I very glad the outcome was good.
There is a lesson for all of us here. Listen to your body, that pain and discomfort is trying to tell you "Hey, something is wrong! Get it checked!".
Most of us tend to try to do the macho thing and ride it out. We are ALL guilty. Some things we do are pretty benign, some not so much. Many of us here have gotten lacerations that should have been sutured but put a butterfly on it or superglued it and got back at it. Think twice about that stuff, sepsis and some of the infections these days are nothing to mess with. Anyone heard of MERSA?
Like Court said, retirement is beckoning, like Court I want to enter that stage of my life in decent enough shape to enjoy it. I heard Court's message and am now going to take better care of myself. This life thing is too short the way it is without messing it up by being stupid..
I get the retirement thing too. One of my best friends, about a decade older than I am waited too long. Health problems, prior injuries and other problems limit both the time and opportunities he has left. Grab it while you can.
Just picked up a 2016 4WD truck today and off to the next job, I'm going to get them lined out and them I'm heading to the coast of Maine to relax for a couple days before we dive into 14 months of 6 and 7 day weeks.
The good news is I'm feeling great and love what I do.
I can't thank those of you, here on Badweb, enough for your support. I was being a smart ass and didn't realize, for several days the situation i was in. Your support was huge.
Hahaha....... Hoot it'd look bad if I were the first to spring to agreement .....
:-)
But alas ...... You may be onto something.
One way or another ...... Badweb folks ..... For the better part of 20 years ..... Have been amazing. I never dreamed, in my wildest imagination, I'd meet this many amazing and passionate people.
I dunno what's going on, but every time I open my email on the phone, there's the recovery room selfie of Nick-Nolte Court. Man have I got my act together now! Put the holy fear of God into me like boy howdy! Back to exercising and eating right.
