>> JB2: That's only the second photo I've seen of Bhuff's new-to-him KLR - dang, it looks brand-frikkin'-new!! : ) Yeah it does... and he stole it right out from under Reep. Can you believe it? I told you about the previous owner's toy obsession... |

>>I could do a KLR. Maybe not as my *only* bike...maybe... Missed this one... I'm ready to bring the CM400A to market and even though there'll be 2 other bikes in the garage they are both projects and the KLR will be my only bike, so-to-speak. I don't foresee having any passengers anytime soon so I think I'll be fine with just the KLR and the Sony. Since getting it my "want-list" of street bikes has diminished and my "want-list" of dual-sports has exploded. Don't think I could go back to a street bike anytime soon. I would like to have one more cylinder and a 6th gear. (Message edited by jb2 on May 05, 2015) |

And one from the Lumix so it still feels loved. Reep, my FZ150 has the equivalent of a 600-mm zoom on it. I find that kind of reach, particularly with the brilliant image stabilization, simply amazing. But what is perhaps even more amazing is this lens' macro ability: I can get in so tight that the UV filter is actually touching the subject matter and still get a crisp, clear photograph. That's a lot of flexibility in a single lens. Here's a recent example of the macro ability on the FZ; the top (12 o'clock position) of the filter ring was resting on the cylinder when I took this shot: Here's the rest of the revolver, just because, photographed in a tabletop studio: Don't think I could go back to a street bike anytime soon. I hear ya, brother. I was, as you know, in love with the '06 RK right up to the day it went away. The '14 is more of the same, only better. I know I'd dig having a dual-purpose bike in the fleet, but I can't ever imagine not also having a big road-burner at the ready when the mood strikes. Different strokes for different folks; it's all good. |

Well, the new grey market camera is marked as "in transit" right now. So youll probably see pictures soon... either from that camera, or me sitting at a table looking like the kid from "A Christmas Story" when he got Pajamas instead of a BB Gun because I got screwed going grey market... |

Please, no photos of you in your jammies. Sunrise on the Parkway, 04/12/2015, heavily stepped on in Photoshop, including a filter that emulates vacuum-wrapping the image in clear plastic:

No good pictures yet, but the D3300 is everyhthing I wanted and more. I am shooting at F4 and F5.6 in low light past sunset (too dark to read) and at 12800 ISO still getting great looking "good enough for great 8x10" shots. Wow. |

Ok, had to go pick up my daughter so we snuck downtown and shot a few... Scaled here for badweb, the detail is really high behind them (24 MP)
Those were all natural light, though I did cheat a little and break out the F1.8 35mm prime lens. This is an overcast night, it is DARK out there. These were all handheld without a tripod. Some were 3200 ASA. |

Those LX5 shots are wonderful! It does a "good" job on a lot of shots, but there are a few you see there that no other camera this side of a $2000 rig can touch... People don't realize how expensive it can get in order to capture kinds of pictures. |

Great to see more pix! More, please. Here's a photograph shot with a ton of zoom (made possible by the FZ150's excellent image stabilization utility), and "roughed up" just a bit in PS:

Cool! The image stabilization is another great way to make the camera act like it has more light. For people who arean't familiar, it is amazing technology. Basically, the camera detects the motion in the image, generally coming from movement of the camera (which is grossly amplified by telephoto because you are basically holding a half a mile long stick... think trying to hold the dot still on a laser pointer). The computer looks at that movement, and uses little mechanical devices to "unmove" the image and make it stand still. So as you wiggle the camera up, the lens is wiggling down at the same rate, so the image looks stationary to the image sensor. Amazing stuff. It can work other ways too, like to track a car going across your field of view. I think some of the Panasonic Lumix cameras allow you to choose either mode, though you are generally better off letting it fix your camera shake, particularly at high telephotos. On a long lens, it generally means you can shoot at a slower shutter speed and still get good pictures, so in a lot of cases it lets you get great pictures in much lower light than you could otherwise get. You usually pick up one F-stop easy, and sometimes can get two or three. |

Tried pushing some limits today at lunch... So this is a stock Nikon VR 55-200mm lens, which is F5.6 minimum when zoomed to 200mm. I set the ISO to be "HI", which is something like 25600 or more. That means, in my dim little florescent lit office, an F5.6 lens at 200mm could shoot at 1/500th of a second. (pardon me while I lift my ancient old film photographer jaw off the floor).
You won't mistake that for a studio shot for sure. But you also won't mistake it for a bad photo. It absolutely captures the thing that I am trying to capture. Amazing. |

Now tell the camera that it can go to 1/200 second exposure, and the ISO drops to 12800. That puts a lot more quality in the picture. And spend 30 seconds in The Gimp retouching it to bring up brightness and contrast a little, and you get this:
Indoor lighting, 1/200th, 200mm, F5.6. Wow. |

Taken with a very old Kodak DX7630. If I remember correctly Alex had one of these too. For as crude and basic as it is, it has been my primary adventure camera for nearly 20 years
After 3 days on gravel and dirt roads. The very trip when I decided I had been buying the wrong bike for way too long. |

I got the original D70 in 2004, and it's still ok, but I can't consistently get a decent action shot indoors (girl's volleyball) even with some expensiver lenses. I'm interested in a newer camera body too, so this has been interesting. It would be nice to be able to use my existing lenses, but better if I don't need to and could just sell them. Seems like everybody and their brother carries around a big Nikon nowadays. Long time ago it was pretty rare for anybody to have a Nikon, it was like pros or very serious amatuers only. I like that FZ150, I'd never heard of it. |

Jayvee, you are in precisely the situation that lead me down this road. I still love my D70, I'll keep it and not hesitate to grab it for outdoor work, but for $300 I added the D3300 body too. The D3300 will take every lens you own, and add at least two F-Stops to it. So if you are forced to shoot a 1/30 now (probably the case), you will be down to 1/125 easy, and maybe even as far as 1/500th of a second if you can tolerate the image quality I posted above in the really high ASA shots. My kids are all outdoor sports now, so I haven't actually gone into a typical gym and tried it, but the math is pretty solid. |

Reep, great pix. I like that FZ150, I'd never heard of it. Jayvee, the FZ150 has been discontinued by Panasonic, but the bigger/better/newer version is, indeed, bigger and better (and newer). Check this out: The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 Digital Camera is a bridge-style point-and-shoot digital camera that features a 16.1 megapixel High Sensitivity BSI MOS sensor and Venus Engine image processor to produce high resolution still imagery and full HD 1080i/p video with notable low-light quality. The combination of the processor and sensor enable a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-3200, which can be further expanded to ISO 6400. The processor also affords a wealth of speed to the camera, including the ability to record up to 9 fps in a 3-shot burst, 5 fps with one-shot AF, or 2 fps with continuous AF. The built-in Lumix DC Vario 60x optical zoom lens provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 20-1200mm, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives for working in almost any shooting situation. Benefitting this extensive zoom range is POWER O.I.S. [optical image stabilization], which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake when working with greater zoom magnifications and under low-light conditions. This image stabilization system also features an Active Mode that is well-suited to creating steady HD movies by countering the appearance of camera shake in a variety of directions. • 16.1MP 1/2.3" BSI MOS Sensor Venus Engine Image Processor • Lumix DC Vario 60x Optical Zoom Lens 35mm Equivalent Focal Length: 20-1200mm • 3.0" 460k-Dot LCD Monitor 0.20" 202k-Dot Electronic Viewfinder • Full HD 1080i AVCHD Video at 60 fps Built-In Windshield Zoom Microphone • POWER O.I.S. with Active Mode Creative Controls, Panorama, and Retouch Price? $234.00 through Amazon, and they cover the shipping. That, my friend, is a TON of camera for the money. Reep, you gave a brief explanation of optical image stabilization the other day. It's amazing technology. This was shot very early Saturday morning. This is a 1/30th-second exposure, ISO 100, hand-held with the equivalent of 354 mm of zoom: Pretty remarkable, IMO. (Message edited by fb1 on May 11, 2015) |
