I posted this question over on the K1200LT discussion forum I subscribe to and never got a response. Since this group seems to have pretty good technical knowledge of a wide variety of topics I figure I've got nothing to lose but a little time asking over here. I have an Aeroflow windshield on my K1200LT. This is a two-piece shield; the main shield and a smaller "Laminar Flow Plate" (LFP) that "floats" along the bottom of the fairing as the shield is raised/lowered. The idea is to always direct the airflow along the inner curve of the shield no matter what position the shield is in (without this plate, there is a LOT of turbulence behind the shield in the higher positions as the airflow just shoots straight through the opening). Anyway, since the lower part of the LFP is actually in contact with the upper part of the fairing, it originally had a foam/felt strip cemented along the lower edge. This protected the plastic of the fairing as well as eliminated the vibration inherent in two hard plastic pieces contacting one another on a moving vehicle on less than glass smooth road surfaces. Time and weather took their toll and the foam/felt deteriorated. I had to clean it off and replace it but I can't find a suitable material. I called the manufacturer but they no longer produce this item. They suggested weather-stripping tape so I went to the hardward store and bought some. The problem is, every summer the glue on this tape melts in the sun and the tape moves out of position leaving a sticky, messy, slime trail on the bottom of the LFP. Since it also moved out of position, I get that annoying harmonic vibration again. Does anyone know a source for heat-resistant weather stripping tape? Roughly 1/4" wide? Thanks in advance. |

If you can find suitable foam I would use something like Permatex Ultra Gray or clear silicone gasket maker. Ultra Gray is pretty hardy stuff but clear might be all you'd need. |

Does this have to be in the form of a weather strip seal? There's a multitude of bumpers, feet, etc. that could be used if you just need to separate and stop vibration. I've got some real small ones, just shy of 1/4 inch that are made as bumpers of kitchen cabinet doors that open up against a wall. Nice and small. A friend used to get them from the stereo shop he worked at from Harmon Kardon. They used them as turn table feet. Of course check the hardware stores. You could roll your own seal by cutting some 3/8 to 1/2 inch rubber hose in half and gluing it in place with contact cement, or possibly super glue. |

Clear silicone caulk can make for a good adhesive too. |

Have you thought about bed rail seals? Might have a more heat resistant adhesive, since it's for automotive use. http://www.cargogear.com/OneItemInfo.aspx?partnum= MPULTTS Or the old standby... http://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-E-O-1-1-4-in -x-30-ft-Camper-Mounting-Tape-for-Trucks-V447H/100 122697 |

FYI - I've used black canopy seal on the back of my X1 fairing to keep it from rattling on the gauges. (I have a flyscreen hinge...not the tightest thing around.) It's been there for years without melting off. |

Hootowl, thanks for the tip. Both of those items are a lot wider than I want or need, but I suppose a straight edge and X-Acto knife could fix that easily enough... |
