If all goes as planned I will be upgrading both the hardware and software of this server on Sunday. Actually, I will be replacing it. I will try to make it as fast as I can but in order to try to prevent data loss or corruption, the server will be offline while I do the upgrade. Unfortunately, there is over 24GB of data that has to be backed up, moved and then restored. So it will take a while. Thank you in advance for you patience and understanding. Brian |

We Buellers appreciate that there is a community for us that has such good, solid support, from the admin to the posters. Thank you for all you do for us out here. Perhaps this is the time to ask about a gofundme page for BadWeb. It would make me feel better! |

To be exact, these are the major upgrade points: CPU from 2 core @ 2.4 Ghz > 8 core @ 3.4Ghz Memory from 2BG > 4GB Hard drives are new but the same size since capacity hasn't been an issue Operating System from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS > Ubuntu 14.04 LTS |

Just curious... Why Ubuntu over CentOS or Debian? And why 8 cores? I thought web servers needed ram more than CPU??? I don't have a lot of experience with web servers so take my questions as looking for info vs. being critical. |

Personal preference I'd guess. I run Mint Linux myself now after probably 8+ years of Gentoo Linux. Better support, easier maintenance and upgrades. New kernel supports rolling hot patches without rebooting, etc. Mint linux is based on Ubuntu, just packaged as a different distro. My machines at home are 8 core AMD FX models (8370E, low power if you're curious) and have either 12 or 16 gb of ram. These are just boxes I'm running at home for basic services (ftp, web hosting, file server, etc.) and are not heavily utilized outside of my network. I did so for low latency and responsiveness. |

Ubuntu is nice. RedHat or CentOS make sense if you want to pay somebody for support, but if I was doing support myself I'd probably grab the Ubuntu server edition also. RedHat was good about being stable, but probably *too* good about it. I got tired of fixing broken stuff every time I rebuilt a server just to get things to work right. It's one thing to not mess things up with arbitrary upgrades, but another if it never worked without tweaking and you have to just re-tweak every single time you install. |

Greg, In addition to the reasons others have stated, we used to use Redhat and then CentOS in the past. With CentOS, the software selection wasn't very good and we had to package our own perl modules that Discus needed. Also a CentOS upgrade killed the server once to the point that it was unbootable... We aren't very forgiving about screw ups of that magnitude. We moved to Ubuntu for the combination of long term software updates and package availability. Regarding the hardware, you are correct, in general RAM is more important on a web server. However, Discus, and more specifically the search function, really use a lot of CPU. And, if we needed it, a RAM upgrade is simple... |

I'm curious if the search will work better now, previously it would bomb out if it was searching too many posts. I typically would have it only search posts in the last 300 days or so to avoid it timing out. I will have to try it later. |

Thanks. My CentOS experience has only been with 6.5 and 7, but if you need an older package it is difficult to find an rpm and certainly not a binary. |

>>>Is it me or is the board blazingly fast now? Anybody can make a board blazingly fast . . . but we have Super-Brian. Look . . . . I can put two and two together. I'm not sure what he did. But since he did his thing . . . the snow has melted, the sun has come out, my bike started right off after a long winter and the market has gone up. Coincidence? I think not. |

Fuzzz, can you try to copy/paste the message you are seeing at the login page? Also, try logging in from the "Login/out" link at the very top of the page The Backfire Board is hidden to those not logged in, hence why you are not seeing it. Sometimes you need to log out and back in with the link at the top to make it visible. |
