>>>>People have been getting dead because of hypothermia in their homes. 2 folks in NYC (one in Manhattan on the Upper West Side and one in Staten Island) have fallen on ice, whilst walking home from a bar (girl in NYC) and County Club (guy in Staten Island) and been found frozen the following morning. Another case in NJ. Winds here (I live right on the water) have been a factor pushing wind chills well into the -25oF range. Like those who engage in sport in this weather I used to climb steel towers in it (during ice storms to repair electric lines) . . . but we were dressed for it. I also spent one winter (96/97) doing some cold weather testing of a Buell you'd meet the following year. Once temps drop below freezing . . . even sport is an entirely new game. |

We actually don't have a stable situation. Temp over the last few weeks has fluctuated by 40-50 degrees or even more, from below to above or vice versa in a matter of hours or through out one day. It will rain all damn day, then suddenly drop 30 whatever degrees and freeze the already pooled up rain water as well, turning into freezing rain/sleet for a couple hours, then throw a foot or whatever of snow in top of it over the next few hours after that.... then kick on 30-50+ mph winds and away we go to work or wherever. last may, we had 60-70's the day before, only to wake up to 10" of snow the next morning on my birthday... I just posted this someplace else, but I have never, in 37 years(OK maybe just at least since I've been an adult) there has never been a time where i haven't gone someplace I wanted to go because of weather. There have been days I "couldn't make it to work" but there has never been a day I couldn't make it home. Or wherever I decided I wanted to go for that matter. We get plenty of power outages, etc. That last for far to long sometimes. I don't mean this to sound like you guys aren't getting crapped on because you are. But it's becoming more common and people are going to have to start adapting... The seasons have moved time frames since i was a kid. They have also shifted locations a bit... people just aren't looking at the bigger picture of it. No i don't mean global warming. I just think it's the natural progression of things. Stuff doesn't stay the same for ever |

Weather is cyclic. Warms up, colds down, all related to sunspots and el nino ocean currents. (and other.... but in the U.S. mostly the Pacific currents ) There's also a long term very slow warming trend since the late 1700's...... but the cycles are real and much bigger in amplitude. ( in old geezer voice ) "I remember the blizzard of '66, when we dug tunnels through the snow to visit the neighbors..." no kidding I do and we did. We also used to camp in the snow and I've slept in an igloo I made myself..... too wimpy for that today. Boy Scouts were more fun when we had pocket knives. |

>>>>Specifically what models were you testing then? That was, specifically, S3T #0001 that was the early production, about 6 months prior to release. I used to fly into Milwuakee on Sunday afternoon and wait till dark to make the jaunt from East Troy to Topeka. That particularly trip was memorable as it was 10oF when I left the factory. No heated gear. . . just HD its with liners. My first stop was about about 20 miles from the factory . . . . it was a Loooooong night. Old timers will recall this is the bike that I got lost on the dirt back roads and stole . . . what I thought was gas. . . . from a far tank during a blizzard. Yep . . it was diesel. Loooooonnng walk into town . . . . . looooooong shaft fat screwdriver to drain carb . . . bought gas can and gas . . . . looooooong walk back to bike. This was the bike I explode the piston on which told us a lot about changes that would be make in Euro bikes . . . . also failed the first side stand switch . . the morning after the shock broke in half at 80mph in Ardmore, OK . . going from Ft. Worth (where the isolators were replaced) back to Topeka. Specifically. I saved all my daily test reports and looking at them makes me cringe in my sunset years. EDIT: it was NOT 10oF . . . it was 19oF (Message edited by Court on February 23, 2015) |

"I saved all my daily test reports and looking at them makes me cringe in my sunset years." You've got that all wrong, Court, not a cringe at all, but... Surely one of these... |

That was, specifically, S3T #0001 that was the early production, about 6 months prior to release. Was that one Amazon Green? Reason I ask is that I remember checking out a pre-production Amazon Green S3 (but not a T) a handful of times. I put 'some' miles on it each time (which was hard to do justice on with something that isn't supposed to be out and about in public), but nothing compared your ET to Topeka run. Do you have any recollection about the fairing lowers on S3T #0001, Court? 1313 |

And of course with these cold temps...some bright boy at the cable channel AMC (I think) decided "the day after tomorrow" would be a good movie to slot into the schedule last night. |

It's snowing here as I type this. We have officially set new records for the most snow during the month of February, the most snow during any month in recorded history and the coldest February on record. As of right now, this is the second most snow for the entire winter, but if we get 6 inches more, we'll set the all time record. I hope we get a record smasher of a Nor'easter. That way, I'll be able to brag that I survived the winter of '15. (assuming, of course, that I survive it)

To highlight the East Tennessee ice storm situation on this day, there are still over 3,000 people out of their homes. No electric or water, and trees still blocking roads a week after the main storms. Most of the people have moved out to Red Cross shelters or to relatives homes elsewhere. Now we are expecting two and a half days of rain, with one more night of snow and ice. On top of more trees coming down, that will cause flooding and land slides in the area. This is the beautiful area where some of the greatest riding in the country is that we love so much. Where is this "spring" the weather people are speaking of? Let's ride! |

44 degrees F and foggy here this morning, but the weatherman is promising a high of 72 so I geared up and rode to work. HOPEFULLY the sun will be shining at quitting time! |

Dangit, Jeremy, don't send that stuff our way!!! Talked to my sis and another good buddy in Arkansas yesterday- sounds like they're getting very similar craptastic weather, and of course it all heads to TN the next day! I went and looked at my bikes yesterday. Went and picked up a custom TN license plate from the courthouse for the Triumph. Maybe NEXT week I'll get to pull one or both out for a ride. Not holding my breath, though. |

According to Intellicast. com: For March 6 Average high 41° Average low 23° Tonight's low 1° Tomorrow's high 24° While I sure hope things swing the other way soon, I kinda hope we get one more ass kicker of a snow storm. We're less than two inches from setting a new record for total snow accumulation for the season. I don't want to just break the record, I want to see it shattered. Either that, or I hope it gets up to 80°, stays there until the fall and sets new records in the other direction. |
