We've had a pretty good Winter this year, so far as snow is concerned. We were on our way to possibly setting some sort of record for the least amount of total snow accumulation. It hasn't been a drought; almost every time precipitation was heading our way, the temperatures would go up, and we'd get rain and not snow. I was enjoying riding on relatively clear streets, and hoping the trend would continue right into spring, then it could warm up.
That all changed yesterday.
Yesterday, we got a little bit of snow. We only got 7 inches. That in itself isn't enough to worry about, but it's what's coming that's got me grumbling. Monday night, it's supposed to start snowing and it isn't supposed to stop until Wednesday morning. The Weather Proctologist on channel 5 was predicting 24 inches accumulation. To add insult to injury, there's more snow coming on Friday, but that will be a small storm; only 6 - 10 inches according to Intellicast.
Boy; do I hate Winter.
Here's the obligatory picture of two feet of snow

And this is how I feel

Western South Dakota is way behind snowfall average to date, too. We've gotten only around 6 feet total this season (which started last summer) and had had more than that by mid-October last year. Surprisingly, it actually rained yesterday; practically unheard of in January.
Unfortunately for me, all three ways out of town are through canyons that rarely see the sun, so high risk of ice in the runoff.

That's too bad, hopefully the storm builds up and you get alot of the snow you've been shorted this year! I know we have been lacking it to, and it sucks!

Court, I'm just glad I'm not stranded at LaGuardia this time...

Let the record show that sitting in an airport for two and a half days with no change of cloths (except the suit you wore in) SUCKS.

The cab ride back from the hotel was worth it though, the driver was a WWII vet (I figured it out by context of something unrelated he said). Once I made it clear that he didn't have to talk about his service and that it was none of my business, he told me some neat stories and really opened up about his experience.

WOW. . . . being stuck in LaGuardia would be a living hell.

It's gorgeous our at this moment. . . . I am looking out the window at the Empire State Building with a surreal cast over it.

The real intensity should arrive neigh on about 4am and, as of 11:00pm, it's a $300 fine to have a private car on the roads. The subway, NJ Transit, PATH, MetroNorth and LIRR are shutting down at 11:00am

The way it's sounding now . . . .they will be closed until sometime, perhaps late tomorrow night. The entire city . . . save those poor souls ensconced in the $500/night hotel rooms gets a "snow day". Broadway, at this moment, is dark.

I brought the 4 wheel drive truck home in the event I am called out to do emergency work but our models, at the moment, point to a lot of snow . . .not much loss of power. That, see Superstorm Sandy, is subject to change. This is evolving into the largest blizzard ever on the East Coast . . .we'll see.

I just cooked on the balcony and am curled up till Wednesday.

LaGuardia . . . yikes !

For Immediate Release: January 26, 2015

GOVERNOR CUOMO ANNOUNCES TRAVEL BAN IN 13 DOWNSTATE COUNTIES EFFECTIVE AT 11PM TONIGHT

MTA Completely Closing all Public Transit Systems at 11PM

Ban on Tandem Trailers on Major Highways Remains in Effect

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo this afternoon announced a travel ban on all state and local roads in thirteen downstate counties effective at 11 p.m. tonight. All MTA and Port Authority public transit systems will also be suspended beginning at 11 pm. until further notice.

The Governor urged commuters and motorists to get home well in advance of the 11 p.m. closures as the storm intensifies throughout the evening and travel conditions worsen. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for the greater New York City metropolitan area effective today and through Tuesday night. The National Weather Service forecasts snow accumulation of at least 1 ½ to 2 feet combined with wind gusts of up to 70 MPH on Eastern parts of Long Island. People in the region should continue to closely monitor weather forecasts and advisories.

"This blizzard is forecasted to be one of the worst this region has seen, and we must put safety first and take all necessary precautions," Governor Cuomo said. "Commuters and drivers need to get home as quickly as possible before the storm completely cripples our transit networks and roads. The State will close all roads and public transportation effective at 11 p.m. and we urge all New Yorkers to prioritize safety and be patient as we wait for this storm to pass."

Details of the road and transit closings are as follows:
• For all local and state roads, a travel ban will go into effect at 11 p.m. until further notice in the following 13 counties: Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Ulster, and Westchester.
• New York City subways and buses will operate only local service beginning at 8 p.m. and service will be suspended beginning at 11 p.m. until further notice.
• Long Island Rail Road, Metro North, Staten Island Railroad service will be suspended beginning at approximately 11 p.m. until further notice.
• PATH service will operate on a weekend schedule beginning at 9 p.m. and be suspended at 11 p.m. until further notice.
• A ban on tandem trailers on I-84, the Long Island Expressway, and the Thruway from Exit 17 to the New York City line, including on I-287 and I-95, went into effect at 4 p.m. and remains in effect until further notice.

On closed roads, only authorized emergency vehicles will be permitted. A violation of the travel ban is punishable as misdemeanor that includes fines of up to $300. The Governor today signed an Executive Order authorizing the State to institute the travel ban on local and state roads.

For more information or to keep up to date with the most recent information, New Yorkers can visit: http://ny.gov/blizzard2015.

LIRR station waiting rooms will remain open around the clock through Friday, January 30.

For road updates, New York State provides a travel advisory system that features real-time travel reports and road conditions, which can be accessed by dialing 511 or online at www.511ny.org<http://www.511ny.org/>. I'm sure it'll be blasted in the media, but good on Cuomo! Better to be proactive, than to have to react to potential disasters. People today are too scared to make decisions like this, ahead of time, because of potential "repercussions". But if you take the chance up front...well...I'd rather have people bitch about the "inconvenience" in the case of a mis-forecasted storm, than have them be upset after dozens die on unsafe roads because nobody did anything to prevent it.

While I'm upset that we only have 3" on the ground here in Maryland...my thoughts go out to those in the NE region. I hope everyone is prepared, and gets through without any major issues. Be safe, and stay warm!

reminds me of when (in college) my roommates and I used to help the NG unit train. We (three ex-boy scouts and two eagle scouts) used to be OpFor, giving the guys someone innovative to chase and evaluate.

One of the NG officers showed up at our room during the blizzard of...damn...93? I think? Said "get your BDU's, time to play, truck's out front". MD had closed the roads - period. Forbidden. No travel, no exceptions. In the words of the five man electrical band "I tucked my hair up under my cap" (I had a ponytail halfway down my back at the time), and walked out to the waiting multifuel-hercules-engined M35A2 rattling away in the parking lot.

Turn a couple college kids loose in a state of emergency, on snow-covered and snow-closed roadways, in a military deuce-and-a-half...what do you think happens?

I think we pulled a dozen "good ol' boys" out of the ditch where their lifted "bad-ass" trucks were as worthless as a prius.

Felt good. But it was also eye-opening as to the total stupidity of the human race - people do some dumb shit on snowy roads...people who should just stay home.

If it gets bad..stay home. Avoid the morons. Drink some scotch, watch some TV...and wait for the plows. Nothing is so important that you *have* to do it in a blizzard.

This storm is a big one. When the Governor closed down all roads last night, the News people said that it's supposed to be one of the top five winter storms in recorded history.
I just looked out my back window, and I can't see a house that's 100 feet away. The winds woke me up a few times during the night. It's tough out there. I'm glad i'm inside where it's warm.

Yet somehow they can predict within a hundredth of a degree the temperature of the entire planet 50 years from now using thermometers accurate to one degree and a computer model less accurate than a Halo game.

And tax you based on that..

For the ones that got missed... lucky.

For the ones who didn't. ...good luck. Stay home.

I got stuck in the snow on the way to work today . . . .

Sure they missed it . . . . . . . but they also, just recently, missed the "expect 8-10" " in Buffalo that turned into over 7 FEET of snow.

They erred on the side of caution and good models . . . . just missed it. I'm growing weary of them all of them . . all over the media . . blaming everybody and everything .. . . they are starting to sound like Obama. I'm a construction worker . . you make the best call you can with the best information you have and you own your decision . . . . if you have to go back and change it . . fine.

Leadership is about responsibility not clairvoyance.

Teeps . . .don't sweat it . . .I was there a couple weeks ago playing on Angeles Crest Highway (where I got hurt . . funny story) and never tire of Southern Cal winters . . .

I spent a lot of time living in Manhattan Beach, Coronado and Marina del Rey and it never bothered me to have Xmas in 70o weather.

But . . . I must say that NYC has an electricity like no other town I have ever been in. I've got two regular places I hit every week for late night jazz and it's quite awesome to arrive at Columbia and hour before I have to teach . . .walk into Manhattan School of Music . . .listen to recitals . . then get out of class and walk a couple blocks and see my friends in Smoke or Cleopatra's Needle.

I've also been hitting a house . . old Brownstone that's been in the same family for 4 generations, . . that is in the block where Miles Davis lived . . the hood is crawling with killer places.

That'd be a tough thing to find in LA !

My Quebec friends are saying "Bunch of babies" and suchlike.

Was an interesting drive from Toronto to Montreal last night too, snow melted & refroze, road was a skating rink. Driving a Volvo with autobox (which I love) but this one only with single drive axle and a tag axle, running super singles & an empty trailer.
Let's just say traction was in short supply, was down to 25 mph on some gentle hills.
Dropped it into manual shifted up a couple of cogs & let it chug gently just over a fast idle on the very slippy bits.
Still took over 9hrs to do what normally takes 5 1/2.

I once pulled into a truck stop in western NY during a blizzard with 8 semi trucks following my Dodge Van. I could see the tops of the telephone poles, and just feel the edge of the pavement, so I was very slowly poking along, 15-25 mph in spots. I knew there was a Semi behind me, and was sorta chanting "sorry. sorry, this is all I can do" under my breath for 25 miles or so...

I didn't expect the convoy that trailed in behind me into the light at the stop.

I went inside and braced for the yelling from the guys I had been holding up... Instead to a man ( and woman ) they thanked me for dragging them in, and told me they could tell what I was doing, and they couldn't feel the road like I could in my little box, so they all followed me.

I've also run into a police stop from the wrong side of a closed road. It wasn't closed when I started, but I don't mind slowing down, but never, ever stopping.... and I run studded snow tires. From Dec. to April.

Made it out to Dr.'s appointment this morning, avoided drivers worse than I am, and made it almost all the way back to the house, now stuck in driveway.

Shoveled deck.
Will start shoveling drive as soon as I thaw out a bit. May not make it out until spring.

Since I won't have a job, I'm now declaring myself an illegal alien and demanding that the Obamaplow come and do my drive.
