I had a friend who bought a Ural back in 1995 just so he could take his German Shepherd with him. She flat loved to ride in the sidecar and would sit with her left front paw resting on his leg.
I had a hack on my FXR-P when my son was two (he's now 30; I feel so old...). It was a California Sidecar rig, and a hack-riding buddy of mine who was also a gifted machinist fabbed all the hardware and helped me set up the proper geometry.
My boy just LOVED riding in the chair. He'd be strapped into a car seat, which was seat-belted into the hack. This kept him low enough to be behind the windshield and protected from bug hits and such, but high enough to see out, and more importantly for him, high enough to be seen!
The little shit, at two years old, mastered the "parade wave" - you can imagine what a hit he was when we'd go out for a ride.
His longest chair ride was from northwest Washington to Glacier Park and back, including the Going to the Sun Highway. He was a natural. We hit a nasty electrical storm in the Park and had no place to hide so just kept on going (yeah, I know...). Rainin' like cats and dogs, lightning bolts all around, and he's got his hands out the windows (we had the soft-top up on the hack), laughing and giggling like, well, a two-year-old.
Piloting a hack is...different. Sure was fun, though, and I'll always cherish those memories. I pointed Prior to this thread last night; he's got an infant son and a dog - I see a Ural Patrol in his future...
Love this thread and have a little input of my own, below. My long since gone, Tasha getting ready for a little trip around the countryside in my home made side hack and my KL 250 back in the 80's. Much fun. Boy do I miss her but still have an Alaskan Malamute. Great memories. Thanks for starting a great thread Jaime.
I haven't had a dog in many years. I LOVE dogs, but working full time, it just wouldn't be fair. My wife is a licensed AKC judge, but she has her health problems and wouldn't be able to give a dog the attention it needs either. For the past couple of decades, we've had cats (just one at a time).
Although they're very affectionate and MUCH lower maintenance than dogs, I can't picture my cat sitting still in a sidecar.
On the other hand, when I first started riding in the 80s, I remember being passed by a rider who had a piece of shag carpeting fastened to his gas tank. Hanging on to that carpet with all of his claws was a cat, just hanging out and watching the world pass by.
There didn't seem to be anything else holding the cat in place so I don't know why it wouldn't just jump off at the first opportunity but it was a pretty cool sight to see. I'm guessing he must've started training that cat from a VERY early age.
I've got 2 good friends, both retired, who used to travel from TN to TX with their cat in the sidecar, and many other points to/fro on the map.
I also know another guy who has worked for years as a P/A distributor for MC's, he's trained his Yorkie to ride in the tank bag of his BMW G/S. Never seen a happier dawgie!
I would really REALLY like to get a Ural, but the lone dealership on Long Island dropped the brand earlier this year and the next closest is in New Rochelle. The closest service center is in Brooklyn, neither of which are terribly convenient. Since I have NO mechanical aptitude whatsoever, I'll have to cross Ural off of my list (for now). Main reason I dropped Buell was that the closest dealership after mine dropped the brand was in Long Island City. Besides the lousy traffic and godawful road conditions, their service department was overpriced and not terribly good either. Right now there's only one EBR dealership on Long Island and they're in St. James; a bit of a haul from where I'm living at the moment.
