I'm going to be coming down to the International Motorcycle Show at the Javits Center on Saturday, December 13. How bad are the lots near the show reaming suckers for parking for "Special Events"? I'll be in a Toyota Trilobite (Prius) with three friends and we need to know how much money to bring. Is there a street we can park on without getting a Ticket? |

Crusty, Go down the Jersey Side to Weehawken. Take the ferry from Port Imperial over to the Midtown/west 39th terminal in NY (10 min ride or so) Then walk up the street to the Javits center. You'll pay less for parking and the ride combined than you will for parking alone in the city if you can find it. Parking around the Javits is tough to find and expensive. http://www.nywaterway.com/PortImperialWeehawkenTer minal.aspx |

If you were coming by bike, you'd find free parking but otherwise Rock1576 advises wisely. |

How is Crusty supposed to get to New Jersey without paying tolls and isn't that far out of his way? |

If he came down and crossed the Bear Mountain bridge and took the Palisades Parkway down into NJ, he'd avoid a lot of the tolls. |

Park north ..... Jump a train from Beacon or someplace .... Plenty of options. |

I have a route that gets me to the Javits with only a $.50 toll; and that's here in Massachusetts for the Mass. Pike. Somebody on the Guzzi forum gave me a link to a Parking lot 5 blocks away that lets us park for only $23.00 (tax incl.) if I print out their coupon. I think that's what we're going to do. It's a damned sight better than the $60.00 + tax that the lot across the street is getting. That way, we can use the money saved to buy lunch at some BBQ joint I've heard of up in Harlem. |

You guys have fun I can't do December for the MC show it just doesn't feel right. The weehawken ferry is a great thing it even comes with a free bus that runs through Manhattan if ya wanted to do more than the show. |

If you go in January or February you might be a bit disappointed at the dearth of new bikes on display, Dave... |

If you wanted to come in tonight . . . . I can hook you up with some great music in a private house in Bed Sty . . . actually on the same block Miles Davis lived on. I've GOT to stop staying out all night . . . but . . you have to confess it's pretty. :-)

Crusty, Google NYC Parking and you'll find a number of choices, many that are at least a block or two closer for the same or less. One site, ParkWhiz shows an Impark at 452 10th Ave. for $18, and it's less than 1/4 mile away. Two years ago I found a small lot on the corner of 9th and 30th, about three blocks away that was cheap, but there's new construction there so it may not exist anymore. At any rate though, Google is your friend. You should be able to get a little closer for the same rate. BTW, did you say Dinosaur? I want to try and make the show this year. If nothing gets in the way I may meet you for lunch. |

The British Buell enthusiast group has an out in that they ban people like me that know buell is a scam. |

Dinosaur BBQ 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 13, 2014. That gives us 4 hours to enjoy the show and 1 hour to get back to the car and drive up to 125th St. It sounds do-able to me! Two of the people who are coming with me have never been to the show and the other hasn't been to the show since the mid '90s, so it'll be interesting to see their reactions. I still wish EBR was going to be there. |

Hey Griffmeister; thanks for the link! I found a parking lot that's closer for $18.00! The only time I got cheaper parking was when I rode my bike down with you a couple of years ago. Now all I have to do is convince my friend Ernie that going to the Dinosaur in Harlem is not as dangerous as he thinks it is. He can be a bit paranoid at times... Here's the link, if anyone else needs (relatively) cheap parking for the show: http://www.parkwhiz.com/p/new-york-parking/357-9th -ave/?start=2014-12-13T08%3A30%3A00-05%3A00&end=20 14-12-13T14%3A30%3A00-05%3A00&event=258396 |

You can assure Ernie that the Dinosaur location, in Morningside Heights (not actually Harlem), is about as safe and gentrified location as you'll find. Try telling him..... And it's accurate..... It's the "tony upper west side". He'll be fine. |

I can vouch for the 'Harlem' location of the Dinosaur being safe as well. I had to visit a magazine in the Hearst Tower a few years back. I was loaded with a laptop and a backpack full of tools. Made my way to the Dinosaur after 'work', had some kick arse BBQ, and walked a few blocks after dinner - after dark - and caught a cab back to my hotel, and I'm still here to tell the tail. Completely safe! 1313 |

Harlem hasn't looked like the apparent expectations I've read here since the 70s. Totally different vibe these days. |

Interesting that 3 of the city's Top 10 bed & breakfasts are in Harlem. Few realize that, in it's day, the area North of Central Park . . .say about 112th . . was where the affluent lived. It requires a bit of knowledge, like most of the city, to navigate. But many are surprised to find the cost of homes and the average income in "Harlem". I'd much rather be caught in Harlem at night than in the Long Island City I worked in 12 years ago . . . that shows you how things have changed. If you are looking for the "bad" area of New York City . . . Javitt's Center is about as close as you can get. |

Crusty, all you have to do is tell them you left your bike outside with the keys still in it. When we finished lunch, it was still there. |

Since everybody seems to be going on Saturday (and I'll miss you all), I think that when I go on Sunday instead of heading uptown to the Dinosaur (I've eaten at three different Dinosaurs this year already) I think I'll head DOWNtown and try out Katz's Delicatessen. New Yorker all my life and I've NEVER eaten there. I've a sudden hankerin' for pastrami... |
