Should bring back some memories . . .damn sure reminded me of the day we first met. :-) That day would take an entire chapter in your next book to do any justice to. Remind me to remind you to tell us all about it some time...

Court, remember this pic of you and Erik? That was taken just a couple of hours after we first met. That was a Very. Good. Day.

Ahhhh. . that shirt brings back memories. We had been in a bit of "hot water" with the powers that be . . . Erik and I had a habit of "dismounting" at kind of inopportune times. The t-shirt lived it's life in possession of the last person to be called on the carpet for "childish behavior". We were told we needed to "grow up". We're still discussing it but neither one of us wants to go first so . . . well, we've taken it under advisement. Why don't you and D grow up and let us know how it goes? :-) |

Why don't you and D grow up and let us know how it goes? Not me, pal - you first! Battle 2 win, Latus on Sandy, and the infamous S1 are what started it all, for me !! Thumper, I bought the BLURR, my '92 S2 Thunderbolt, from Kim Ridley at Latus Motors there on Sandy Blvd in Portland. In fact, it was Ridley who gave me Court's telephone number when Court still lived in Kansas. I cold-called him out of the blue one night, told him I'd just bought a new Buell, and I think we yakked for something like three hours, like we'd known each other since grade school. It was Court that paved the way for me and my/our friend Jeremy Ricker to get ride down early and get "behind the scenes" at the first Battle 2win/Blue Groove dealio down in California, including meeting and riding with Erik for the first time. Small world, but not really: Buells and Buellers just seem to have that magic about 'em. BTW: For eleven measly bucks YOU could be the high bidder on this magazine; just sayin'...

I'm back.. was pouring through boxes in the loft this last hour, to see just exactly how many Battle 2win mags I had.. what a trip down memory lane as each issue meant I had made the 200 mi round trip from the coast to acquire it, and to hang out in the showroom, talk to owners and deliberate on which Buell model I wanted to save-up for the most.. good times! (for a "then" college kid on a budget) funny thing, out of all the cycle worlds and rider mags, the B2W's are worn the most.. I'm talking highlighted articles, notes on build-ups, folded corners and wear weary, thin pages! FB.. what a cool event/story about you, Kim (he's still in the biz @ Eugene Latus I believe!) & contacting Court for the first time! ..wow, & getting "IN" on the So. Cal events and hanging with Erik and the gang in the early days, well, thats the stuff dreams are made of.. Yes, YES! ..I know of, and have been to all the places in your pictures! and to venture a guess, I'll bet you and your "ol' Buell amigo's" had ridden many of the roads, and had been to many cool places on your "early version Buell American hot-rods" in our beautiful state back in the day! Allow me to place a bid on this great piece of Buellin' history.. $30 |

Court, you highlighted a piece on the Buell Brothers in one of your pix above: Here's a pic that Buell Brother Roger Roeszler mailed me a zillion years ago: L to r: Roe Mersman, Patty Robinson, Bill McCann, Roger Roeszler, Terry Michael and Tom Anderson The first year I rode to Sturgis I looked up Roger. He was working at the H-D/Buell dealer in Rapid City, and I mentioned that I knew of him because of this article. We hit it right off, and ended up hanging and riding together the next day. Snot-nosed punk that I was, I figgered I'd show him a thing or two about carving up a twisty road (of which there is no shortage in the Black Hills). He spanked my ass so hard I couldn't sit down for a week (and he never broke a sweat in the process). Bitch! I've run into him several times over the years. He was our featured guest at a PACBOG ride up in Seattle one time in conjunction with the IMS, and of all crazy things Denise and I ran into him in central California one time coming back from the races at Laguna Seca. A bike came ripping up behind us, and as it got closer I could tell it was a Buell. I looked over as the rider slid by and it was Roger! We all pulled over and had a great visit there in the middle of nowhere. I haven't spoken with him in years, hope he's well. He always treated me like family, even when he was kickin' my sorry little punk ass. |

Your inaugural issue of Battle 2win also has a feature piece on legendary Fran Crane. You'll remember that a group of us rode to Eastern Washington to meet her in the summer of 1997, the year she did the Iron Butt Rally on the Buell S3. She was dog-tired when we met her - the rally was in the latter stages at this point - and had very little time to concentrate on anything but the rally, yet she was kind enough to stop down for a quick photograph: It was just getting dark by the time the Iron Butt organizers held the rider's meeting and everyone had mapped out their strategy for the final leg. I remember feeling a little sorry for the riders as they disappeared into the dark for points unknown - everyone was plenty weary at this point - yet I also remember wishing I was any one of them. What a grand adventure. Remember earlier that summer when Fran rode up to Portland and joined us for Blue Groove/Northwest? Just a quick little 1500-mile round trip for her; I think she was back home in less than 24 hours. Ride in peace, Fran. Thank you for your patience, leadership and friendship. |

Roger is still very much in the thick of things. He's been an icon in the world of Buell for years and continues to help more Buell owners than folks can imagine. |
