The DOD has had this tech for awhile. Laser systems designed to burn out the optics of missile guidance systems has been around for many years. Powerful lasers have their disadvantages though. They require a lot of very carefully regulated energy, get very hot, and breakdown rapidly with excessive heat. Not to mention that powerful lasers of any wavelength, visible or invisible, will irreversibly damage the human eye in no time flat. I liked the scene in Ironman 2 where Tony cuts the drone robots in half with his lasers... unfortunately, anything like that is purely science fiction. Lasers are cool, and I'd like to think that someday we will be able to utilize them for weaponry. Who wouldn't want a laser cannon in the gunsafe? |

I think you're more likely to get a gauss rifle first. What with all thework going into battery technology these days. Phasers set to stun, beam me up Scotty. |

You have to be kidding me. There's a USS Ponce? Somebody at the DoD needs to do more research before naming ships. In the UK a Ponce is what you'd call a Pimp in the US & the word is used as a very derogatory insult. pmsl |

Ponce, Puerto Rico? Historic city names were used in naming the amphibious vessels. Austin, Denver, Nashville, Shreveport, etc. Puerto Rico was inhabited back in the early 1500's, and I'm pretty sure Ponce de Leon was the governor at some point, hence the city name |

Kind of like when James May from Top Gear stepped out to learn about wine and becoming a "Wine Ponce"! |
