The steel cased lacquered 7.62x39 should not be run in a Ruger Mini-30. Works great at first then cases start to stick and you will then be tearing it down..... and hair out.... getting the crap out of the chamber.

Happy to learn which solvent works best. My buddy soaked his action in a length of steel tubing filled with mineral spirits and still had to scrub with chamber brushes "for freaking ever".

The Ruger has much tighter tolerances than the AK's.

Experience tells me you get much smaller groups too, but not M1 Garand sized. I think you need a rigid chassis stock to get really great accuracy out of the typical Ruger Mini. Sometimes you get a gem and it's great out of the box. KEEP THAT ONE.

OTOH the Ruger is damn near as tough as the AK and will imho shoot better all day long.

LOL. I didn't even know Ruger made a Russian chambered Mini. Cool idea.

Blake, that is a really good price for 1000 rounds of Wolf .223 especially with brass cases & free shipping. I might just jump at that myself. Thanks for posting up. And Rick_a; my RRA Elite Operator runs that ammo and Tul-ammo just fine but I always do a thorough strip down cleaning after every shoot but a good thought bud, Bob

As long as we're into "guns and ammo" here is a funny perspective from a friend in Chicago on just that; hope you can enjoy it with the correct mentality as its great humor and not too incorrect:

You may have heard on the news about a Southern California man who was put
under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns
and allegedly had 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home.

By Southern California standards, someone owning 100,000 rounds is
considered "mentally unstable."

In Michigan , he'd be called "The last white guy still living in Detroit ."

In Arizona , he'd be called "an avid gun collector."

In Arkansas , he'd be called "a novice gun collector."

In Utah , he'd be called "moderately well prepared," but they'd probably
reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity
of stored food."

In Kansas , he'd be "A guy down the road you would want to have for a friend.

In Montana , he'd be called "The neighborhood 'Go-To' guy."

In Idaho , he'd be called "a likely gubernatorial candidate."

In Georgia , he'd be called "an eligible bachelor."

In North Carolina , Virginia , Mississippi , Tennessee , Kentucky and South
Carolina he would be called "a deer hunting buddy."

And, in Texas he'd just be "Bubba, who's a little short on ammo."

And with the price of ammo, a "mass quantity" would be considered a wise investment when bought at the proper time.

Speaking as a strong proponent of the second amendment, if the reports are accurate (and given they indicated there is video of the event, they probably are), then good for them for disarming him.

Thats one nice thing about an AK, it works pretty well with really cheap ammo.

This is true. I've heard people say that they won't put "steel cased crap" in their AK. Why not? The things are designed for just that.

The myth that AK's are only good for hosing bullets are as overblown as the idea that AR's are finicky, delicate target rifles.

The Bulgarians, Russian, most SKS, and the heavy barrel RPK styles tend to shoot quite well. There's also the DMR or "sniper" AK variants like the PSL, M76, and Yugo .308 M90 as well as some others that are no slouches.

Even most of the ugly, lowly Mosins shoot quite well with match ammo.

It's harder to find higher quality ammo for them and most optics people throw on them tend to be poorly mounted and crude. Most use the irons which are quite rudimentary compared to the click adjustable apertures on most western guns.

My plan is sending out my PSL barrel out for cryogenic treatment to reduce the heat induced string after multiple shots.

My friend has a mini-14 in stainless with a synthetic stock and he told me that he cleans it by blasting it with carb cleaner down the barrel and receiver.
Carb cleaner is mainly acetone usually.

He swears that he never takes it apart.

Good point! Getting a good optics mount for an AK is one place where it is weak, and the AR platform is strong.

You can get decent optics mounts for an AK, but they add $100 or so to the price of the gun.

Which is a shame, as an AK with a red dot site is a lot of fun : ).

Another thing to remember guys about the AK platforms is that it was designed for close in (out to only 200 yds. or so) for mostly combat in the heavily wooded areas or jungle fighting and was so designed with a bayonet. The longer varieties were chambered in 7.62/54 for longer distance work and accuracy.

My own Egyptian Maadi AK with stock open sights could regularly hit a man size target to 200 yds. With a Tasco red dot sight and the top receiver cover mount it could hit 1 gal. milk bottles easily to 100yds and as Bill said was great fun. That is about all you need for that type of fighting. For longer ranges such as we're seeing in the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan a rifle needs to be able to stretch out to 1 miles and sometimes more with most shots by snipers well beyond 500 yds. Regular troops, I believe will be just fine to 500 yds. with their standard M4's. It, like any tool, really does depend on what the main purpose of that tool is designed for and the job at hand. Bob

My preferred weapon for the mountain combat is a pissed off United States Marine, Ranger, or Seal.

(And I had to choose a weapon for them, I'd probably pick a radio attached to either an Apache or an A10, followed with a nice steak dinner and a good cigar ; ) ).

Bill, did you ever see the actual Army archived video in Afghanistan of a sniper using, I believe, a .50 cal., waited a very long time for three combatants to line up in his scope about a mile away on top of a mountain and killed or at least put down all three with one shot. Not Hollywood either but a true report. Now that takes some patience and dedication. And I do like your idea especially since my son Mike works on the A-10's here at Hill AFB. Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Ratbuell,

Just found this and it looks ideal for someone like you.

You can get it in 9mm, .40, or .45 acp.

You can also change it from right to left hand in a couple of minutes without tools or extra parts!!

Nice........but the OP lives in a slave state and a lever action like a Henry or Marlin would be a better choice.

I loved my AK.

I took my AR pistol out this weekend for the first time. It was my first build from parts and it ran perfectly for around 400 rounds. Not a single malfunction of any kind, but she is DIRTY!

My AR carbine ran flawlessly too for the round count we put through it, but put it away early because the optic would not adjust for windage.

Just had a co-worker ask me if I could source this for him.

SCAR17S: Matte Black finish, 16 and 20 inch barrels
EOTECH sight 1.5x magnification (if cheap enough)
fold-able stock
angled forgrip
SCAR25 GEN II billet aluminum lower

Any idea what this will run?

Not before the Civil War.
After the Progressive movement? Not so free anymore. Not sure if I'd call it a slave state. More like occupied territory.

Dean - FN is an expensive form of lust.

Google up the SCAR system. A few thousand bucks without extras (I know, I had considered)

I own a few legacy FALs. Love the gun. Lot of history.

SCAR is a more robust system in current use with SpecOps folks.
