With Fall coming shortly, I wanted to throw this out for the beebs opinions.

What's the best THIN windproof undershirt?

My new perfed leather jacket is great, but it lacks an inner liner for the cooler days ahead. Keeping the wind out will be crucial for comfort as the temp drops.

I ran accross this and it fits the bill for the most part, but I know there are other options out there. Let's hear it!

Better than putting something under your leather, put on a rain jacket over it to keep the cold air outside the jacket. It will be MUCH warmer than a layer underneath. Something like a Frogg Toggs jacket can be had without breaking the bank if you don't already own something like that.

If I need a liner, I wear my Gerbings heated jacket liner. Light, slick so it doesn't bunch when you put a jacket over it, thin )(thinner than your average fleece), and when it's REALLY cold...just plug 'er in. Num-num...toasty warm.

I second the heated liner advice. I bought a Powerlet jacket with a wireless thermostat and it worked great on my trip to the great white north. Heated grips are another part of the equation.

Having something that won't breath underneath a heavy jacket is just asking for sweat. Which, believe it or not will get cold. Having wicking, breathing under-layers, and an outer jacket that is weather-proof is a much better system.

I second the heated grips... with a good alpine stars jacket and pants, balaclava, and heated grips, I can ride in comfort, all day.

WOw. I never occurred to me to put something on the OUTSIDE, but that's a great idea. And since the jacket it very fitted, I don't have to worry about stuffing another layer underneath and feeling more restricted.

I wish I could claim to be smart enough to come up with that on my own too.

I found the "outside" idea a long time ago, but there was nothing smart about it. An ill prepared trip up north forced me to put on everything I had with me to keep warm, turns out that rain gear makes for a good windbreaker

Yeah I discovered the rain gear for a cold weather wind breaker a few years back also. I do that even with my heated liner on.

This one time.....at band camp.....I forgot my rain gear, and it started raining and it got really cold quickly, so I stopped into a Dollar Store where I bought a box of industrial garbage bags. I wore one under my jacket and lined the inner front of my riding pants legs with one, then I made a poncho out of another one and secured it with masking tape. It worked quite well.

If it just gets cold and not so wet, newspapers inside the forward sides of your gear works well.

Makes sense to me.

As for heated gear, I will probably never need it as my dedication to riding has its limits (and my bikes electrical system is fragile as it is.)

Now to find a rain/wind proof jacket that will fit over my leather jacket, but not too baggy to flap all over the place. Thinking one size larger than normal. Suggestions of what jacket(s) to look at are welcome!

Living in Central Cal, probably have another month before I will want to keep the wind OUT.

The Frogg Toggs I gave a link to earlier is something I would recommend for occasional use. Pretty easy to find at Cabela's, Bass Pro Shop, etc., and reasonably priced. Also comes with a bag to stuff it into. I really thought it would flap around more than it does. Unlike cheap plastic or nylon, it does breath some too. The down side is that it's a material that is kind of funky in that it's not a woven fabric. It's not nearly as durable as something like a cordura jacket that would last much longer. That's why I would say for occasional use. The Frogg Toggs will probably pack down smaller than many other options though. If this is likely to be a daily use thing for you seasonally I would suggest spending more for better durability.

If the rain protection isn't part of the equation, any jacket that cuts the wind well can work. Even a cheap nylon wind breaker that won't breath will probably have more than enough air leakage so that you don't get steamy as long as it's not an inner layer.

On a second look I see I didn't provide a link. Google can help.
