I'm going to take a business trip from Cincy to Atlanta, and decided to try and do this one on the Uly. It's an awfully pretty ride from here to there. I'll probably stay over in the Knoxville area, can anyone recommend a decent mom and pop type hotel where I can park the bike in front of my room, and expect to find most of it still intact in the morning? I've stayed at a motel 8 and another dive on past trips where I did this, and it turned out OK, but they were kind of sketchy. Thanks in advance! |

OK, never mind, booked that one. $39 per night. If it is too nasty, I'll sleep in my riding gear. |

You might also look on www.tailofthedragon.com They have info on local lodging and might have something better than the Travelodge. |

Lucky you! I'm currently on a business trip, staying in Clinton, TN, and my employer prohibits the use of motorcycles for business travel. Well, at least the US portion of the company. You can imagine my pain when I had to turn 'the wrong way' on 129 when leaving the airport in my rental pickup truck, 1313 |

On the south side of Deals Gap, I've always been very happy with the Microtel in Robbinsville. They are clean, affordable, and extremely bike friendly. They have dedicated bike parking right by the front entrance. It's literally on 129. Farther south than you asked for, but still within easy reach from Cincy in a day. It's got great riding any direction you go from there too. I've stayed there quite a few times now. |

I didn't ask the question specifically... Plus we are owned by Europeans, they are stupid about guns, but they have the motorcycle part right. I'm eating a lot of the costs though. Thus the $39 motel. What kind of free continental breakfast do you suppose you get at a $39 per night hotel? :0 |

San-Ran Motel just a few feet from the Robinsville microtel. It's a brick single story long narrow building owned and operated by Randall and his wife Sandy. I think they have 12 or 15 rooms and have a great covered sidewalk in front of your room to park your bike. No breakfast but definitely bike friendly and clean. Good swale to unload if your trailering and a great cafe across the street. Ride safe and if you see 86129squids up there don't try to follow him |

No worries, I ride like an old booring fat guy who just wants to enjoy the ride and get home safe. I'm particularly boring in the mountains, because I don't like out-riding my sight lines and blowing through blind corners assuming "it will be OK this time because it was OK last time". |

On the way back I'm going to stay at Tellico Plains, at a "lodge" (I'm picturing a shed with a bed) at the hunts lodge campground... No continental breakfast included, unless I catch it and kill it. |

Reep- Give a holler if you happen to be passing through Maryville and K-town on a Sunday or Monday- those are my standard days off... If you've been given a per-diem decent enough for some good grub, I can surely help there- heck, stop by the house and I'll share some of our home-made salsa! Whutchu talkin' about, Sknt? (I only used to be fast, but I'm getting used to this Triumph... my velocity-meter is more tuned to my '77 Beemer than that stinky fast green bike!) |

Didn't get the PM Vern, just email me at Bill at KilgallonFamily.com. Second Week New12r. And again, let me emphasize the old boring guy aspect of this, particularly for the ride out. I have to arrive intact and drama free to do work on Monday. I want to enjoy a nice ride through the mountains, not be stressed or try and impress. |

OK I'll resend it there. And again, let me emphasize the old boring guy aspect of this, particularly for the ride out. I have to arrive intact and drama free to do work on Monday. I want to enjoy a nice ride through the mountains, not be stressed or try and impress. No worries Bill.....personally, I ride with a limp even. I ride as a guide per the slowest riders desires or skills. Anyone wants to go faster or go ahead may, we'll meet up later. I have a simplistic way to ride the Dragon. I don't often or intentionally exceed the speed limits. Cornering is the game. Many times I have been passed on a straight by a fast loud Road King, only to see them getting a ticket on the next straight. That always makes me laugh! |

Got your message... I'll reply in email. That's actually the exact same way I ride the dragon... The corners are still fun and I don't have to worry about tickets. And bombing though it just means you catch up with whoever is in front of you anyway. My funniest time was on the KLR-250 (that cornered far better than it had any right to do). I let a bunch of squids on inline 4 1000's by me (who wants them behind you?!?!?!). They were slowing for corners then hauling ass on the straight bits. I was holding 35 MPH everywhere (both corner and straight). I kept them in sight for about 4 miles going up the mountain, after which they finally lost me. Until, about two miles later, they were all pulled over getting a ticket, and I came tooling by, still at exactly 35 MPH. I tried hard not to laugh. Oh wait, no I didn't. This is from that same day. Great day until later when I spun a cam bearing in the head on the Cherohola later that day. Oops. Glad the sportbike guys weren't around to laugh back...
