So.... I went down, hard. Just over 30 years old now, been riding motorcycles for a tad over 25 years. Therefore, I've had my fair share of accidents on and off road, and this was my first off-road bike accident on the road. Last Monday, my roommate found a gas gas 270cc trials bike for sale for too cheap. Being the hooligans we all are, of course he picked it up. http://i.imgur.com/gUHQwrjl.jpg I raced home from work Monday evening ready to see what trials bikes were all about. My roomie was out riding it when I got home, so I quickly changed out of my casual working man's clothes and got ready to get on the bike. Roommate came tearing down the street into my yard a bit faster than I'd like so I took his helmet out to him as he was squidding it out. Well that was my cue to get on, so I dawned my Icon Variant. Alpinestars smx plus boots, Alpinestars smx2 gloves and took off on the bike. Leaving my court, I pulled the front wheel up a bit, and was surprised how easy it was to balance the gas gas. As the bike is geared so low and idle set so low, it seemed that third gear was ideal for cruising. I turned around at a stop sign and decided, unfortunately, to see what kind of balls the bike had. Figuring it was a 270cc and weighed about 150 lbs, thought it would be pretty stout. So, of course, I grab a fist full of throttle from idle, the front wheel rises unnaturally high and fast, next thing I know I'm chasing the bike, moving about fifteen miles per hour. I know I should have let go, but I didn't. So I smash the ground, knee first, forearm second. Not sure if I hit my head, but I noticed the bike was still running so I tried to crawl over to it so I can kill the engine, but I can't. I crawl off the road into the grass and try to pull out my cell phone to call my roomie, my hands aren't working right though. A lady came by on a golf cart, so I had her call my roommate. He drives over in his civic, and one we realize that I can't get in that tiny car and call an ambulance. The bus takes me to the closest hospital who then gives me some pain meds and an xray. That hospital decides that I'm far too broken for them, and I need to head to the major trauma center downtown, same one that treats IndyCar drivers and motogp accidents http://i.imgur.com/tsdhyVK.jpg The trauma hospital xrayed me again and decided that I needed an external fixation to reduce swelling enough that they could repair my knee plates and screws. http://i.imgur.com/4rofh2Sh.jpg Five excruciating days later, the surgeon cleared me for surgery, and he spent six and a half hours repairing my knee. Now I sit here awaiting to be released. I will spend the next three months without bearing any weight in it and hopefully be at 90% mobility within six months. The surgeon said I got really lucky; usually these breaks result in severed arteries and then amputation. Be careful out there guys. I never thought I'd be in this situation, but it happens. Fully preventable, think before you act. Life, it's fragile. http://i.imgur.com/MVhmBvah.jpg |

Glad you had your helmet on. It's too easy to just jump on and give it go without one. Heal quickly. |

Owie!!! Sorry to hear about that, friend... I did a quick run down and back to Tellico Plains yesterday, planning on doing the entire Cherohala/Dragon loop today. I'm enjoying this new bike, but also trying to be very mindful that it IS new, different, and quite a bit more powerful than anything I've ever had. Back when I was a buyer for a MC wholesaler, I got to sample/ride all kinds of bikes- if there was one that I wanted to do a longer ride on, I always was mindful of the differences from my regular rides. Hope you mend ASAP, with as little trouble/pain as possible! |

99buellx1 Posted on Monday, August 04, 2014 - Small bikes always seem to get people. Amen to that 99. One of my worst, I was riding a CR80... And look at what happened to Jeffrey Herlings... http://www.cyclenews.com/655/24810/Racing-Article/ Jeffrey-Herlings-Suffers-Broken-Leg.aspx |

Wow! Really sorry to hear/see that. And, yeah, low(ish) speeds can have bad consequences. Years ago, racing at an indoor short track in Indiana, on a circus ring of all things, a friend highsided and stuck his leg out to catch himself. Destroyed the lower part of the knee joint. Important thing is, Do Not Do what my friend did, and not follow the doctors instructions as to rehab and care. It eventually cost him everything. Take care. Get well soon! Dave |

"Small bikes always seem to get people". Some of the worst crashes-injury wise and not fatal-have been on smaller bikes. But that is just me and in my own circle of life. Heal fast. Glad it was not worse. B. |
