R.I.P Johnny. I saw him at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino, Sept '75. The night's performance was recorded and, "Highway 61 Revisited" is on Johnny Winter Captured LIve! |

Teeps- That's a great story. I listened to that track MANY times at near-WFO volume levels during my college days. I saw him in '73, '74, and '97 at various locations in SC. It's really sad that he'd finally got clean and sober about 5 years ago and was in the best shape he'd been in in years. He also has a new album due out in September featuring Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, and others. |

I hope they don't sit on that new album. Are they still called albums? I miss the cover art and the little extras.... I believe Rick Derringer opened that show and played with Johnny Winter's band the entire night. This motivates me to resurrect the turntable and give Live a spin. If I only had a tube amp. |

I guess I'm dating myself calling it an "album". Info on new recording (a term which hopefully covers all possible formats): http://www.guitarworld.com/new-johnny-winter-album -step-back-feature-eric-clapton-billy-gibbons-bria n-setzer-joe-bonamassa-and-more |

Saw him at Woodstock '69 and at the Fillmore East, sometimes with Edgar. Had a style all his own. |

"Album" is the collection of songs, regardless of the format. And I still have a copy of "They only come out at night". (Message edited by fast1075 on July 17, 2014) |

Saw him last year in a small town in Brandenburg near Berlin. Great concert. What a gentleman! |

I saw Johnny Winter in a small club in Boston in 1981. I was sitting at a table less than 10 feet away from him. I think I suffered significant permanent hearing loss that night, but boy, could he play! |

OK, I think my mind has just been permanently blown. I was trading posts with some other Johnny fans on FB today, and somebody posted about Johnny's parents. Johnny's dad (John Dawson Winter Jr.) died ~13 years ago, but I remember he did an interview that was published on the web where he talked about how proud he was of his sons (Johnny and Edgar). I did a search for that article and stumbled on a photo of the Mr. Winter's mausoleum: There's Mr. Winter at the upper left and Mrs. Edwina Holland Winter (Johnny's mom) at the upper right. Note the name on the bottom right slot: Edwina BUELL Holland. I'm guessing that was Johnny's grandmother. Maybe Erik is related to the greatest Texas blues guitarist ever? Yep, mind blown permanently. |
