If you are going to buy a Triumph to replace a Harley then please look at the new Thunderbird models.
Much lighter than the porky Rocket and more practical. The Rocket is something that Triumph built 'because they could' rather than because anyone wanted it, and they have a lot better bikes in their range methinks.
Yeah I've been looking into those too Matt, but there styling is very HD esque IMO. I need to see them in person tho. I've always kinda liked the insanity of the Rocket, and the reviews I've read say it handles better than you'd think. I won't buy one til I can ride one.
I rode a Rocket III a few years back. Other than power on tap, I really wasn't impressed. It's an incredibly wide bike. Too wide for my taste. Heavy handling that took a good firm push on the bar to get it to turn. I felt much more at home on my Wide Glide. Opinions may vary. That's mine.
I was really surpised last summer, when i had an opportunity to test out a Tiger Explorer. The seating position was, as far as I could tell, identical to my uly.
I've only sat on one in the showroom. When I went to pick it up off the side stand, I braced myself for a heavy bike. The Rocket came up like it weighed half of what it really does. Caught me by surprise. The salesman came over laughing and said he sees that look of astonishment often.
If I ever go back to a cruiser I'll be looking for a used one. Uniqueness was part of what attracted me to my Ulysses.
The bike is a beast. I borrowed a buddies for a spin a few years ago. "Watch out in the lower gears" he said...so I did.
At least, I thought I did. Ended up doing a rolling burnout in third.
I turned around and handed it back to him.
Sad part about that video...they could never release it for mass consumption in the USA because our consumer public is so freakin stupid...they'd think it was a) true and b) an open endorsement of the tricks they pull on the road tests. Our litigious society would have a field day with it.
And that's a shame...cause its entertaining as hell!
Insanity is relative. I believe Kurt Vonnegut on that. After leaving the UK in 1989, I doubted Triumph could ever rise again (so glad I was wrong). Still have fingers crossed for Norton, too. If there were fiscal and physical room in the garage, some version of the Rocket III would be there.
Very cool . . . . particularly in view of the fact that the company was dead and Bloor ended up with it by accident. (he went to an auction to buy the land to build a housing development on).
You should check out the Carpenter builds(have one of his heads on my monster Busa) on the Rockets, crazy power! On my 4th new Triumph and have loved them all!
