Very first attempt at powder coating went very well....... I found it hard to get the powder onto the bottom 3/16th of the bullet. The gas check covers it and no matter,as long as the driving bands are coated.....that's the important aspect. I think the powder is drawn to the foil first. A little messy, but FUN. Wet wipes is the ticket to clean up the stray powder that gets on the gun(Eastwood, single voltage). .50 coated and then sized...nearly no damage from resizing. Resized and gas checked. It just darken the color a bit from the rubbing on the driving bands. .50 raw,.50 sized,.458 raw,.458 sized,.30 raw,.30 sized 50 stout whacks with a hammer is the smudge on the red coated aluminum foil to the left of the bullet. Tuff stuff! Several whacks with a two pound hammer. The lead broke before the powder coat gave way. (Message edited by just_ziptab on April 11, 2014) |

So I've had a chance to run 100 of the Precision bullets through my 9mm XD(m). No hiccups! Stripped down the gun and it was cleaner than it would be with normal lead cast bullets. A bit of lead did show up on the cleaning patch though. I would guess that the rifling is deep enough to cut through the powder coat. It cleaned up very easily though. I'm not sure that this is a huge benefit, but I really don't see any downside, and their prices aren't bad. To me, reduced lead exposure is probably the biggest factor. I'm really curious how the powder coat will work in a high power rifle. Be sure to let us know. |
