Toilet sounds fairly normal for many areas. Three sea shells is scary! Some places still just have a hole in the floor.

Good luck to ya City!

I spent a year over there in Army, circa 1971.
Say hi to Camp Stanley, just east of the city of Uijeongbu, if you get up north.

I am going to OWN the South Peninsula.

What am I doing in Korea ?!?!!??

I am selling Harley Davidsons and Select Domestic Vehicles to our overseas and deployed troops for the Military Exchange.

I am at an Air Force Base, but also responsible for 3 Navy Detachments, 2 Army Forward Locations and several nameless DoD contingents that have little blips on the map but not their own Commissary Location.

In my off time.... I will be teaching English and Blogging about Korean Food, Culture, Travel and Entertainment.

ie .... my dream job : D

One of those buttons on the toilets is for automatic tampon removal. Use at your own risk!

Kimchi is the most disgusting food ever....

leads me to believe one has not tried Balut ; )

Dinner was 'Fusion'
"nachos" prepped with a sweet bean best described as a maple Boston Baked fair.... topped with jalapenos, Thai Red Peppers and Ox tail meat.... it was sweet, spicy, hot and addictive

desert was a bubble tea horchata with tapioca 'beads'

nom nom nom

Ox tail is beef. Campbells made oxtail soup.

Kimchi is hot saurkraut........ an acquired taste for sure, but so are Buffalo wings. I personally do not like the smell.....but it will clear your sinuses like a fire hose if you have a cold. ( how I first tried it. ) If you can get it past the nose....it is hot dog heaven. Or hell.

Now I cannot stand naplam ( spell?) Sauce. Fermented fish sauce from Vietnam. Dang.

I have sampled this "fermented" fish sauce you speak of, Patrick.. nauseating at best.. How could anyone.. oh, nevermind.

I'm fairly sure it is spelled "napalm".. I happen to have two uncles that were of the era..

Brian,

How about that Vitali Klitschko and the Ukraine?

Maybe not the best choice for resettlement destination.

Go freedom!

"Ox tail is beef.Campbells made oxtail soup" Oxtail soup or stew is good. Tastes like any other well made beef stew or soup. Oxtail is actually a very good cut of meat to cook with. While I was in Korea I very much liked the local cuisine. I tried many different foods. Most I loved and to this day would like to be able to eat again. Some I did not care for. Kimchi was one I liked, depending on where it was made.

In cooking beef the parts that work for a living have a lot of connective tissue and flavor. You cook them long and slow to change the connective tissue to gelatin.

The parts that loaf along are bland and softer. Fillet is tender but not as tasty as flank.

Ox tails work. Bad choice for a quick sear and med rare. Like rubber bands. You want a slow braise or stew... think brisket.

For really bad I am told sloth is the worst.

100 dead in Ukraine, as Martial Law - snipers firing on protestors, and a run on the banks - that is going to push a failing currency ?

I see nothing that is not a foreward of what could / should happen in the US - ie The government is no longer responsive to the electorate - and should be removed.... but we are not of the fortitude that is in Ukraine, Venezuela ... we are complacent - docile - and entirely too busy with Angry Birds, Beiber, Miley and of course gimmee my freebee....

but that diatribe should belong over in Conspiracies Thread ; )

The best part about Korea .... the little differences
The little differences ?
In Korea you will find everything has its own idiom to it
How so ?
In Korea - there is no mayo; but tons of wasabi
And in McDonalds - they do not have the Quarter pounder with cheese...
What do they have ?
They have the Bulgaki Burger... and do you know what is in the Bulgaki burger ?
Na man, what is in in the Bulgaki burger?

I don't know - but it ain't beef- at least as we know it (probably ox)

And you know what else.....
You can get a Big Mac Delivered!
You just call up - tell them what you want, and a guy on a scooter buzzes through town to bring you the Bulgaki Burger, or Big Mac....
www.mcdelivery.co.kr

And the best thing ?!!!
what man?
It is cheap ~! Big mac meal with delivery - less than 5 bucks
oh man - I am goin !
I tell ya baby - you dig it the most.

went to grill last night.... surprised that the waitress was Russian, appetizers and booze were comp'd ~! ah the benefits of speaking the language of the staff ; )

cute girl - pure trouble - she gave me a wonderful list of places that are not safe for 'American' to go

Learning language 4 long years
Understanding the culture 20 years (and counting)
Getting a date with a Russian in Korea as an American expat using proper verbs and context ...
priceless

Some things just can't be planned or expected.
