We're in for a week + of snow and freezing weather. It couldn't have anything to do with arctic ice or the Sun, could it?

Typical Germans, using math. I will say however, that people see patterns. It's probably an evolutionary thing, since we were hunter gatherers. You want to see past the camouflage of the Leopard, and spot the edible plant in the weeds. So it's possible that some periodicity items are imaginary. What's that mean to you? Look for patterns, but don't marry them right away.

http://www.c3headlines.com/2013/12/peer-reviewed-s tudy-indisputable-megafossil-evidence-confirms-rom an-medieval-warming-greater-modern-period.html

The time around Jesus's birth were warm, compared to today, and a time of society upheaval, in large part because the larger population the better farming seasons could support.

Variables for Food production include crop yield per acre, time/labor per acre, Amount of acreage, and weather.

Before Steam and the industrial age, the limitations of the technology meant that a single man with animal powered plows, etc. could only work so much acreage.

The yield per acre is most dependent on weather.

Better weather gives you more crops per acre.

Higher yields allow higher populations, and you get cities, wars, empires and technological advances. Only during times of wealth does the cool stuff happen. When everyone's poor, there's little excess to support intellectuals and invention.

So, Rome. Then the Fall of Rome, The Dark Ages, Renaissance, etc. ......check the dates on the tree line/temperature chart.

Basically, if it was in your history book and you remember it's name, it was probably a Warm Period.

He who holds the high ground, wins.

Not that long ago, castles were built on hills. Why? Because an arrow shot from the top of the hill goes further than one shot from below. Defenders of the castle could stand behind walls of stone and shoot the enemy advancing upon them, and there was an area where they could not shoot back.

Same is true of cannon. Rifles. Missiles.

In "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" Robert A Heinlein pointed out a simple fact. To throw anything from the earth to the moon takes far more energy than the other direction.

In simple terms you have to toss an object at (over) 11.2km/s to reach the Moon. Yet from the Moon, you only have to toss it 2.4km/s.

It's like shooting arrows from the courtyard of that castle on the hill. You have to make it over the wall, but then gravity will carry it down onto the enemy. The Enemy has to shoot up the hill, and over your wall to reach you.

( btw, "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" is IMHO required reading for it's story and for it's treatment of Revolution. )

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/warming-593355- global-temperature.html

The time of the Roman Empire was warmer. The Viking age was warmer. ( how do you think they spread from Constantinople to Newfoundland? )

The Pueblo ( Indians ) dweller's time was wetter, locally. More than one civilizations fell because of climate change.

Climate change is real. History, and multiple measurements using ice cores, tree rings, isotopic changes in various materials. Climate Change is Real.

It's happening Now.

Man can change the climate, at least locally, through his actions. It's even possible that the current increased CO2 is a planetary phenom, we contribute to by burning stuff. ( a large part is because the warming back in the 1990's released CO2 from the oceans. Cause and effect are often ignored by politicians )

When the Persian Empire was destroyed by Tamerlane, his method of besieging the cities was not to "destroy the crops" but to wreck the water works, the irrigation systems, and to murder ALL the peasants that grow the food and smuggle it into the besieged cities.

There's a reason that the richest farmland on the planet became desert, and it was deliberate human action.

The Sahara & overgrazing? Human action and unintended consequences.

The Delta Smelt & the Imperial Valley?

There's a reason that the richest farmland on the planet is becoming desert, and it is deliberate human action.

Some of the richest farm land on the planet exists in the Green river valley in Washington (it's the green river south of 405, the Duwamish to the north). They covered it with a shopping mall and office complexes. I remember when there were still farms abutting the mall parking lot. The owners let us fly model rockets and airplanes in the fields they were resting. Even as recently as 20 years ago, there was one holdout, stubbornly raising green beans while drivers hurried past on southcenter parkway. Pretty sure there's a McDonalds there now. I feel old.

That is why the Statists no longer call this Global Cooling (1971), nor Global Warming (2000's), but Climate Change. This way leads to eternal panic no matter what the temperature. The ONLY goal is the crushing of the individual and the growth of the all knowing State.

Liberals, I mean, Progressives keep changing the language. Orwell taught us about this.

Alternative Minimum tax that is neither alternative nor minimum?

Affordable Health Care that is neither affordable nor health care?

You get the idea.......I hope.

Yes, all the stuff about the coming ice age, from when I was a kid, has been tossed down the memory hole. Then it was global warming. Now the "hypothesis" is that the "climate changes" in response to man made CO2.
That's a testable hypothesis, right? The result of an increase in CO2 will be infinity minus one possible climate conditions. They're no longer even willing to cut infinity in half by predicting increase or decrease. Wow. That is a pretty hard bet to lose, if you can get someone to bet with you.
Oh yeah, the taxpayers will take the bet!

That's what happens when you try and terraform your own planet.

This isn't the first time that government mandated agriculture has had bad side effects. The most horrific examples are from the Soviets, China, Burma, and Zimbabwe. I've mentioned Tamerlane before, and the line "they made a desert and called it peace" comes to mind.

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Tacitus

Closer I think would be to just mention "California Agriculture".

http://www.nationalreview.com/planet-gore/366330/g lobal-warming-creating-wine-boom-england-greg-poll owitz

History note.

Back in the good old days of the Medieval Warm time, Wine was a major deal in England. ( probably near or at the new wineries ) The warming of the late 1990's seems to have been just good enough to kick start the industry there again. Warming rocks!

30 years ago you wouldn't even think about a winery in England, as the global trend had been colder and the Electrification of England had reduced the particulate cloud over the Island that gave them such pleasant London Fogs, & other phenom.

The Mann crowd keeps crying wolf. They keep telling us it's the warmest year on record. They keep changing the temperatures of the past.

The term is lie. It's a very profitable business lying to people.

My concern is that if there actually was a climate crisis, how could you tell? It's like a politician with a long history of lies warning you. Why on earth believe him?

Cattle and other ruminants are probably the biggest human-related source of methane, a gas adding to global warming, and climate negotiators have paid too little attention to livestock, a team of researchers said.

Cows, sheep, goats and buffalo produce “copious amounts” of methane in their digestive systems, Oregon State University wrote in an online press release, citing analysis published in the journal Nature Climate Change today. One of the most effective ways to cut the gas would be to reduce the global population of ruminant livestock, the university said.

Oddly this reminds me of the National Lampoon Radio show's "Monolithic Oil" commercials. "We at Monolithic are killing all the birds around our oil refineries. Birds eat food and food takes energy to grow. At Monolithic, we're doing our part, and you should do yours. At Monolithic, we want you to......pay."

That's right. To save the planet they want to kill all the cows, sheep, goats, etc.

It does make sense in a twisted way. All we need to do to save the planet is to slaughter all life, and man will never mess up nature again.

I had an epiphany last night after too much Russian Grog (it is like Rum spiced nog, but with vodka instead)

What if you could pit the Religion of the Green Economy and its Liberals AGAINST the Over Expansion of the O and his minions that are hawking the Socialist Health Care idiom....

One would have to agree that anything the Greener party does would be granted an exemption against the ACA because .... well its for the planet !.... and a fund management through their accounts would - as health care costs explode (and they always have) that it would further bankrupt the Green Carbon Ideology and show it for the money sham that it is.

So a liberal cannibalistic feeding frenzy where one side exempts itself from the other, and costs are driven through the roof as the fund becomes unmanageable and inevitably collapses.....

All hail the Grog !
All hail the great double lie of Socialist nothing !

does it solve health care - nope
does it solve global warming / cc - nope
does it expose the left for both lies - yep!
does it bilk liberals out of their money - double plus good comrade - and how.

After all, you are a man, and Man kills nature.

There's some truth to that... "Civilization is not an inevitable good or a natural state; it is enabling good over evil, imposing justice over nature, and it must be always defended."

Solar magnetic poles flip about every 11 years. Intensity falling dramatically over the last several cycles is much more important.

Russian and German climatologists believe we are heading into a few hundred years of a little ice age.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/31/science/i-had-my -dna-picture-taken-with-varying-results.html?_r=0

This is an immature science. There's a LOT we don't know yet. There's a lot of promise in DNA analysis, making drug prescriptions safer, treatment for various problems & diseases easier, faster, and better. But it's not there, yet.

The science is not settled, ( it never is ) and it's young. It'll get better. ( "It" being our understanding of a complex Universe )

And, naturally, people take advantage of other's ignorance to rip them off.

You may get e-mails for natural Viagra. Car waxes you can drip acid on. ( one of my favorite demo's at car shows. Spoiler, darn near any polymer based car "wax" will do what the salesmen's "magic" wax will do, just buff on 35 coats. He has. ) Usually sold as a "scientific breakthrough". Use salt.

I'm following this area of research with personal interest. It turns out there's a sensitivity to a certain medication that runs in my family. ( rat poison ) I found that out AFTER a weeks stay in the hospital for being OD'd on it, the usual way. By a relative, telling me, "oh, your Aunt so-and-so had trouble with that..... and your Cousin whats-his-name....."
And now another Aunt is in the hospital for the same problem, and it's a serious issue.

It's also ( to lighten things up a bit ) another of the too many occasions I've had a Doctor say "I can't believe you walked in here with that (problem).... you should be unconscious."

So hopefully soon it will be SOP to be able to reference your Genes to make sure you get the best treatment for the uniqueness that is you.

But it's not happening this week, so save your money.
