Mitt Romney says his Massachusetts health reform plan is much better than Obama’s. He claims it’s different in important ways.

I have to admit you lose my suspension of disbelief in that first paragraph. Why should I care what a rich politician thinks about his own legacy compared to another rich politician?

The rest of the article, in fact basically calls Romney on his brag above.

Inherently biased, and a nice propaganda piece. In no way does it compare the evils of Romneycare to the evils of Obamacare.

It does point out something I didn't know, and I thank you.

Romneycare only works because it gets paid for by the Federal taxpayer. Did Romneycare raise taxes? No, but the state didn’t need to. It covered the cost of reform with larger payments that it negotiated from the federal government for its Medicaid program.

Also did you catch this?

Does Romneycare have an unelected board that tells people what kinds of health care they can have? It does. The Massachusetts Connector Authority serves as the state’s insurance exchange. It sets standards for the types of plans that may be sold, thereby determining the kind of access residents will have to health care services.

That's a deliberate spin. the so called "death panels" in Obamacare have no relation to the insurance you are allowed to buy, but rather the care you will be denied. The author doubles down on that with... Romney’s comment about an unelected board was probably also a reference to a new board that Obamacare created called the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB). It recommends cost-cutting measures under Medicare. Romney, along with several fellow Republicans, has complained about the scope of its power. But Romneycare is a state-based program while Medicare is purely federal. It couldn’t have included an IPAB or any other measure concerning Medicare, even if Romney had wanted it to. which is a bait & switch. It does not address the Obamacare committee that will determine the program parameters that will be the actual "death panel".

Garryb, That article stating they are virtually the same is kind of like saying that the EBR 1190RX is virtually the same as a Honda Ruckus. Both have a frame, onto which an engine is mounted. Both roll on two wheels. Both have handlebars, throttle, and brakes to control them. Virtually identical. Even if they were virtually identical, it would still be wrong to force everyone to purchase a Honda Ruckus.

One glaring difference, that will make a big difference in how both programs operate, is that RomneyCare had a much higher penalty for non-compliance. It's been pointed out many times that BOCare will just be much cheaper to simply ignore for those who can't afford insurance in the first place. Premiums for young healthy people will jump in 45 states under Obamacare Keep in mind, when they speak of "young health people", they are talking about adults under 50. Meanwhile those folks are being squeezed by BOCare on the other side because businesses are putting off hiring, cutting full time employees in favor of part timers, and even closing their doors. Assuming that BOCare could work, this is a very precarious economy in which to implement such a program.

Now everyone go out and get a Ruckus! It's just like what EBR built!

Read the bill - in addition to 'death panels' there is the required 'end of life' and patient power of attorney requirements.... and in abscence of one being set up - one will be APPOINTED for you.

Many years ago I read a study about how many debugged lines of code you can expect per man hour of work. I'm guessing it's a bit out of date, but back then it was only around 10 lines of code per hour. I don't think they do proper testing of code in many cases these days. Microsoft created more acceptance of pretty buggy software. Let's assume that today they can produce 5 times as many lines of debugged code per hour...

HealthCare.Gov Needs Five Million Code Lines Rewritten

Obamacare’s online exchanges have been riddled with problems since they came online three weeks ago, and those issues may continue for at least the next few weeks. Contractors said fixing the problems by the November 1 deadline set by the administration would be “unrealistic,” according to the New York Times.

From the sluggish websites to garbled enrollment information, the flaws require the extensive rewriting of code: “One specialist said that as many as five million lines of software code may need to be rewritten before the Web site runs properly,” the Times reports — that’s out of a total of approximately 500 million lines of code, according to another expert.

Others experts warned that some of the website’s problems are yet to come. One technical specialist involved in the repair effort said, “The account creation and registration problems are masking the problems that will happen later.”

So the fangdangled high tech healthcare system that is supposed to make buying insurance like shopping for a toaster has just been advanced to the most modern of technology! Just call on the phone! Sadly, that isn't working well either. I guess it's state of the art for 1940 or something like that.

The scary thing is that health insurance is a very complicated product that takes time to examine competing products in detail. This is best done visually, in a spreadsheet format, whether on paper or online. The phone is possibly the worst possible instrument to involve in this process. Is this really the government solution we have come to?

So I heard that healthcare.gov now lets you shop without logging in. It's about freaking time. I gave it a try. It winds up listing a bunch of plans, pretty much from two providers here in Illinois. The problem is that all the information you get is for example, the company offering the plan, the plan name, the level of coverage (bronze, silver, gold), whether it's a PPO or HMO, and a price. It doesn't even tell you the freaking deductible amount! Prices are an "estimated" price too. I'm afraid to even ask about that. Honestly, you will get far more information shopping online for a toaster. There is zero explanation for why one "silver" PPO plan is about twice as expensive as another one from the same company. There is no way in hell that I would buy insurance this way. They are trying to sell a very complicated product, dumbing it down to less information than you get about your fast food lunch.

From the Desk of the O ......

"More than just a website

On October 1st, even as the federal government was shutting down, HealthCare.gov -- the new Health Insurance Marketplace where people can find and apply for affordable health insurance plans as part of Obamacare -- opened for business nationwide.

As you may have heard, the website launch hasn’t gone nearly as smoothly as it should have. And with nearly 20 million visits to the site in the first several weeks, the problems were aggravated by the website's popularity.

But even in spite of those problems, thousands of Americans are currently signing up and saving money. Nearly half a million Americans have already applied for health insurance through the federal and state Marketplaces. It's not hard to see why: Once people get through the door, they overwhelmingly like the benefits and cost of the products available to them -- especially when compared with the discriminatory private market that was previously the only game in town.

Some of the best and brightest are now doing everything they can to fix the site as quickly as possible. People are working overtime, 24/7, and we've brought in some of the best IT experts from across the country to join the team at the federal agency responsible for running the Marketplace. And as President Obama said today, "Nobody's madder than me about the fact that the website isn't working as well as it should, which means it's going to get fixed."

It's also important to remember that the website is not the only way to enroll. You can dial the call center at 1-800-318-2596 and apply directly over the phone. Typically, it takes about 25 minutes for an individual or about 45 for a family. You can also find local "navigators" who can help you enroll in person at LocalHelp.HealthCare.gov.

Learn more about what we're doing to make the site better and enrollment easier.

The President is the first to admit that the website's problems are unacceptable. But Obamacare is more than just a website. Most Americans already have health insurance through their employer, Medicare, or Medicaid, and they don't need to go to the Marketplace for new coverage. Instead, the health care law provides new benefits and increased protection: Young people can stay on their parents' insurance plans until they are 26, seniors are receiving more affordable prescription medicine, and preventive care like mammograms are free.

So while there are major improvements to make on the new website, millions of Americans are already benefiting from the health care law. And we're making sure that those who don't have access to affordable health insurance today can sign up -- online, on the phone, and even in person.

Here are some of the things we've done in the meantime to make the process easier. Take a look, and pass this message along to those you know who are trying to sign up for health care:

You can now preview plans and prices available in your area without filling out the online application.
You can find out, with an improved calculator, whether your income and household size may qualify you for lower costs on your monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs.
You can apply for coverage 4 ways: by phone, online, by mail with a paper application, or with the help of an in-person assister.

Thanks, and stay tuned for more updates.

I think that's it exactly. I realized when I woke up this morning, and I just double checked, it never even asked my age or sex. That's critical information before being able to provide information on health insurance. Under this system the critical information seems to be what it can use to cross check you against other databases.

This is not what was promised by this lying POS pResident. I do need to shop for insurance. This isn't shopping though. If it weren't the government, it has all the earmarks of a scam to get your sensitive information. Given that this is from the government...

I love it... calling an insurance market discriminatory. That's like calling the justice department discriminatory because it only goes after criminals.

It just highlights the core difference between a conservative and a liberal. A liberal will spend as much of other peoples money as it takes to solve anything they perceive as a problem.

If Obama wanted non discriminatory health insurance plans, he should have started and built up a company to provide them. And if that didn't work, he could then understand why this program might be a problem for the country as well.

I will say this once more and hope people finally wake up: He does not want this country to succeed as it once was! He wants to radically change it forever. He has shown his true colors already and stated so in plain English. Period. He wants it to fail on ALL fronts, EVERYTHING! Then rebuild it either himself or a liberal successor who will replace him if WE do not learn our lessons from the past six years. Please do not fall for his lies, deceit and BS. Wake up people and VOTE wisely in the next two elections or take the consequences.

So I thought I would check pricing at BCBS of IL on one of the plans that BSCare priced for me. I just picked the one in the middle of what I posted earlier...

Here's my REAL price for me and spouse, both non-smokers...

So looks like they are under quoting that plan by $326.72! I wonder when in the process I would be informed of that BS pricing. There's a word for this if it's done by a private company. It's called fraud! In government, it's called benefits. Why is that? All pricing is without any sort of subsidies factored in BTW.

The plan I looked up is actually withing just a few dollars of what we currently pay for our insurance. One huge difference though, is the deductible goes from $1250 per person to $6000 per person. Having spent 2 days in the hospital just last month, along with an emergency surgery, that makes a huge difference in cost of health care. "Affordable" Care Act my ass!

Now consider that at age 53, I'm in the age bracket that is being subsidized by the young and the healthy. I wonder what's happening with their rates?

Comments from any of the ObamaDontCare supporters?

This is a compelling read:

quote:

The Definitive Guide to How Obamacare is Destroying American Lives
Matt Walsh - Oct 21, 2013

On Sunday night, I wrote a short post soliciting stories from my readers about how Obamacare has already immediately impacted their lives. I asked that all of these emails be directed to ObamacareMakesMeSick@Yahoo.com. I expected a response; I didn’t expect it to be quite so overwhelming.

Over the last 24 hours, my inbox has been flooded with hundreds of emails. What you’ll read in this post represents a portion of them. I’m only one guy (with a fulltime job and twins) — I wasn’t able to go through every single message just yet. Some, I left out because the information was too specific and personal, to the extent that it would reveal the identity of the person who sent it. Some, I couldn’t include because they are simply (well written and accurate) editorials about Obamacare, but they don’t speak to the personal, physical impact of Obamacare on American families. Others, I just haven’t had a chance to read. I expect there will be a sequel to this post coming very soon. Thank you for your stories.

In the meantime, here are the tales of many, many, many real Americans. Share this with your friends. Every time some Statist nincompoop extols the virtues of Obamacare; every time they insist that the “Affordable Care Act” has done nothing but “help” low and middle income families; every time they babble incoherently about how Obamacare isn’t “perfect” but it’s still “better” than what we had before — show them this. Challenge them to read what is happening out there. This isn’t abstract. It isn’t academic. It isn’t a matter of ideology. It isn’t even an issue of constitutionality (although it’s that, also). This is about people. People with kids, and bills, and health problems. This is about people who can no longer afford their health coverage, their mortgages, their lifesaving medication. This is about doctors and nurses leaving medicine behind, driven away by destructive bureaucratic interference. This is about moms and dads losing their jobs so that their employers can compensate for the financial burden of Obamacare. This is about people without insurance because of Obamacare, now being fined for not having insurance because of Obamacare. This is about business owners driven to the edge of bankruptcy. This is real. We heard a lot of fantasies about what Obamacare was “supposed” to accomplish, now it’s time to talk about what it’s actually doing.

So when they say you are “heartless” for opposing Obamacare, show them why it’s heartless to support it.

Sure, the President, the media, Hollywood and the DC elite have touted some “success stories.” But they are few and far between — and they come at a cost. This is that cost. For every person thanking his lucky stars for this new healthcare entitlement, thousands of low and middle income families are suffering.

Is that fair? Is that compassionate? Is that moral?

Notice a few things about the stories that follow: Many of the families facing financial ruin because of the ACA are young. Many are single mothers. Moreover, the vast majority of these emails are from women. I thought Obamacare was supposed to especially help women? Well, I guess for every Sandra Fluke, there’s a million Annes from Nebraska. The former, deeply concerned about getting cheap birth control on the tax payer’s dime. The latter, more worried about having access to affordable lifesaving medication for their children. With Obamacare, the former takes precedent over the latter.

This is insanity.

I’ll be printing this compilation out and sending it to the White House. Then I’ll send a copy to some of our legislators. These people can’t be allowed to hide from what they’ve done.
