why does everyone seem to want to remember 9-11 its a day that showed how a group of idiots took us down. and then we were such pussies to do anything about it. At least the passengers in the philadelphia plane fought the terrorist. but the other planes hit becuase we had so many cowards, who could have maned up and prevented the towers form being hit |

The people in the plane in PA were the last to go. They heard about the other planes via calls from their families. Up until that point in time, hijacked planes were not crashed into towers, they were rerouted to Cuba, or held for political ransom. The people on the planes that hit NY and DC had no idea they were going to auger in. I don't think calling them cowards is a fair assessment. |

if terrorist take over the plane and the terrorist are way outnumbered, you don't stay like sheeps and do as they tell you. they could have rush them and put up a fight. after all if therrorist take over you are dead, you can't think you are going to get out alive, unless you are 007 |

The passengers on the PA plane fought because they had a damn good idea what was going to happen after hearing about the other planes. Like Hootowl said, up until the time the planes hit the damn buildings, the passengers on the other planes probably thought they'd be OK. They probably figured if they tried anything to stop the hijackers, they'd cause the plane to crash or blow up. It's also damned easy to be brave sitting at a computer, as opposed to being stuffed into the back of a plane a few hundred feet off the ground with nothing to use as a weapon but your fists. |

Those people stepped up and fought back because at that point in time the other planes had already crashed into buildings and the people on the plane got word from relatives what happened. The people on the other planes had no idea the planes would be used as missiles. That had never been done before. You're way off base on your assessment. |

As far as the people on the first two planes knew they were just hijacked. Attacking the terrorist would only ensure that everyone on the plane died. They had no way of knowing that they were all going to die anyway (as far as we know). Attacking the hijackers and causing the plane to crash and kill everyone was a reckless and foolish idea based on everything everyone knew about plane hijackings. Before 9/11 the best way to survive a plane hijacking was to cooperate, at least until the plane had landed. The passengers on the third plane were informed via cellphone that hijacked planes were being crashed into buildings. They knew that this was what would happen to them. They realized that their only hope of survival was to take over the plane. I'm sure that they did it in part to save the intended victims on the ground but also because it was the only hope they had to survive. If they could reach the controls and radio for help there was a slim chance they could land the plane. I'm sure that if the people on the other flights had known the intent of the hijackers, they would have acted differently. The 9/11 hijackings were a completely new and unexpected form of terrorism. To call the passengers weak and cowardly is shameful. |

why does everyone seem to want to remember 9-11 Why would you want to forget such a tragic incident? its a day that showed how a group of idiots took us down. and then we were such pussies to do anything about it. let me grab my popcorn & pull up a seat while you explain this to me. At least the passengers in the philadelphia plane fought the terrorist. Because they knew what was coming based upon the other 3 planes that had already gone down maybe? but the other planes hit becuase we had so many cowards, who could have maned up and prevented the towers form being hit You realize that prior to 9/11, as some posters have already alluded to, the "standard" hijacking of a plane resulted in hostage negotiations, right? Not being used as a guided missile. Calling those passengers cowards when they had no idea of what was coming seems a little shortsighted on your part, to say the least. We actually used to teach folks to sit in window seats (harder to grab them from the aisle), dress & act inconspicuous, etc. when they were traveling on official .gov business. That all changed due to 9/11. Please educate yourself before you try to armchair quarterback the actions of the victims from 12 years ago with your 20/20 vision. It makes you come across as an insensitive @$$ IMHO. |

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." As to your question in the thread title, "Why do people say we have to remember": I offer up the families of the plane victims, the twin tower and NYC victims, and the NYPD/NYFD victims and workers, many of these folks who are suffering ailments still. They CANNOT HELP but remember. If the reality of a 9/11 anniversary each year bothers you, just go back to playing some dipshit online D&D game or whatever for a day. Take off your ass-hat, put your thinking cap on for a change. Show a little heart. |

Reindog- thanks for posting that pic. I've yet to visit NYC in my lifetime, that will be one of the first stops. That day was almost identical to today, here in E TN, as far as the weather... My thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected by this attack. Let us also be mindful of our servicemen/women, LEO's, and firefighters that hold the line, everyday, this day and tomorrow.

Was gonna refrain from commenting cause my first thought was troll, but I just had to come back. Bill, where were you at on this day in 2001? Maybe that will shed some light on your insensitivity to the subject. To call those people cowards, I'd like to think that if you did that in a room full of the family, firemen, police, port authority, or even some BadWebbers, or any other Red blooded American, you might actually come away with a better understanding of Pride and possibly a little difficulty with riding. |

Why remember? So you do not repeat the errors of the past. The "coward" comment is uncalled for. A foolish and stupid comment. Many above on this thread have spoken true, so I won't repeat their sage words. You could, I suppose, equate the policies of the past, ( cooperate, wait for negotiations ) with the actions of DHS & TSA to try and make Citizens, Sheep. There's a good argument there. It's not the first, last or only bad policy about terrorism, crime, and victim attitudes. The heroes of PA, honored today at a memorial in a lonely field, knew they might all die. They were not victims, in the old, real sense, just because they did not survive. They were Not defeated. They also fought for a higher cause than selfish survival. This is not a thing favored by the autocrats of this planet, but Enough Americans are by nature, or can become in moments of stress, Sheepdogs. I can offer lots of historical evidence, but instead would suggest V.D.Hanson's "Carnage And Culture". http://www.amazon.com/Carnage-Culture-Landmark-Bat tles-Western/dp/0385720386 |

I believe 1125 got some enlightenment from some great points of view. I can see where he meant no harm..... so I will leave that one alone. I was in the mess decks, in the middle of our weekly training for my division. At the time I was a nuclear machinist mate on the USS San Francisco, a Los Angeles class fast attack tied up to a pier at NNSY, Portsmouth, VA. When the first one hit the tower, our divo came in telling us some drunk pilot hit a building in NYC. We turned on the TV and were watching live when the 2nd plane hit. I was off base, in my barracks room packing, within an hour. We were in the shipyard for a reactor core swap, but everyone was locked down on the boat for 3 or 4 days in order to protect its secrets and weaponry, and we were all put on notice to deploy with other boats if needed. I was put on watch on the bow of the boat with an M-16 for midwatch that very night( a nuke qualified for M-16?-yes ). Getting off and on base for the next week was a 4 hour process. I never got sent over, but many of my shipmates did. I know one particular boat was over there 9 months because of that. They were headed back when the attacks happened. After 9/11, the civilian population around Norfolk did something that actually surprised, disgusted, and angered some of us. They actually started treating us with respect. I understand, it is easy to become calloused from a few bad apples. But the way we were perceived until that point was horrible. I don't know why I resented the change of heart, but like many other things, look at it and shake my head at my younger self. That moment redefined my enlistment. I actually wished for a long time I could have combat to speak of. But after helping support my fellow veterans that have come back mentally and physically damaged from field combat, a selfish part of me is happy I didn't have to go through what those brave souls did. From here until the day I die, I will continue to support and advocate programs which help veterans re-adjust to civilian life after returning from active duty, injured or not. I still don't think we take care of our vets the way we should. It is really sad, actually. My fellow Americans, I will always remember 9/11 as a cowardly act of terrorism against our innocents. Although I am now a civilian, I will always be willing to pick up a shovel, wrench, gun, to protect and serve each and every one of you. Because we are tied by the bond of the soil beneath us. God Bless America. |

Amen, Matthew. I never got the honor of serving - my father (Cmdr/USN-Ret) refused to let me enlist and out of respect for him and what he had done (3 tours - Intel - in Korea in the 50s, CPA for HUD and for the National Gallery of Art after retirement), I went to school and got two degrees. I have many, many friends who have served. I also have suffered - in private sector - a form of PTSD and head injury, along with social issues from those head injuries, from an accident five years ago. I sympathize with our returning warriors...and I, unlike many people, have a very real understanding of what they are going through as they re-integrate into the private sector. Every day is a challenge, and I respect them for what they have done, and what they are going through. Not only our Military, but also our First Responders, LEO's, and Medical personnel. First responders and medical folks kept me alive five years ago - they truly do the work of God on earth and I owe them everything. Literally. On 9/11, I was working at a Jeep dealership. I heard the radio cut out, and go to the news broadcast as I was logging the morning's parts delivery. The dealer was - literally - across the street from Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD. Yes...the "bug factory". The only comfort I had was, if something happened to Detrick...I wouldn't have to worry about limping away. It would be over. And at the time...that was a very real concern. Fear, disbelief, shock, and sorrow - all of those walloped me into a near-catatonic state. We closed early - at the polite suggestion of some Army folks who came by, fully armored and armed - and I went home where I was able to watch the events unfold in full-color horror on TV. To this day, video and stills of those events turn my stomach. I don't get angry, not right away...but I want to puke immediately upon seeing those images. Was it a shining moment for the USA? Probably not, at least not in the air or in the airports or in the pilot training facilities. Ground personnel - fire, rescue, police - on the other hand...ABSOLUTELY a day, a week, a month, of strength and resolve. Those men and women went through, on American soil, more than many of our troops ever will. And...they do it on a regular basis, when they roll to any vehicle accident, house fire, or motorcycle accident. Over and over again...because they care, and want to help. Was it an example of cowardice, in the air or anywhere else? Not a chance. |

"In order to teach, one must occasionally offend. In order to learn, one must occasionally be offended." I hold to the hope that we've helped since the OP. I find that if I take the time to really try to reach someone when it's important, it's a good thing. At the very least I know I did the right thing. |

Somehow I just realized what this means, this online community we call the Badweb. I care. You care. We all are in agreement that one of us should be corrected. We cannot drag any one individual towards the goal, much as a horse won't be dragged toward water to drink. Mostly, it takes time. For any one of us though, our singular rides on this big blue marble will bring us into contact with the good people. I've met lots of them simply by being a Buell aficionado. This can be given to random chance, but I might disagree with that. The OP displayed a bothersome amount of ignorance. Not knowing this fellow, I cannot judge, but I must call him out. Let us all strive to help enlighten him, not yet excoriate him. |
