Repeal of teacher tenure and replacement with a scheme that puts teachers without tenure on annual contracts and teachers who currently have tenure on one, two, or four year contracts.
Creation of “Opportunity Scholarships,” which amount to vouchers that can be used by families at 133 percent of the federal poverty level to send their children to private schools, draining resources and support for North Carolina’s public school system.
NO Teacher or State Employee Salary increase.
Phase Out of Master’s level pay for anyone not receiving that supplement by the 2014-2015 school year, unless a Master’s degree is required by their job.
LEA funding cuts for guaranteed classroom teacher positions by more than $286 million in FY 13-14 and by more than $245 million in FY 14-15.

Perhaps you will want to tell me why any of these are bad ideas? OK, I get that no raises would be a disappointment but other points have their merit. BTW, I'm not a resident but my step-daughter and her family are.

no raises
no benefit in getting a masters
cutting funding for teachers so we/they have to pay more out of pocket for their kids

the tenure part, eh, that doesnt bother me as much. but no more benefit for higher learning? and no raises in salary?
yeah, no wonder our school systems/kids keep getting worse and worse

"cutting funding for teachers so we/they have to pay more out of pocket for their kids"

We spend more per student than any other country. And yet our schools suck. Throwing money at the problem obviously isn't working.

That's not an attack on our teachers, I think they aren't paid what they're worth, in most cases. But in some cases, teachers need to be fired, and because of the union and tenure system, it is very difficult if not impossible.

And the ratio of "administrators" to teachers is alarmingly high. Far too much bureaucracy.

I won't support an increase in funding to schools until they spend wisely the money I already give them. That applies to the rest of the government as well.

No dog in this fight here, but...

Over the last 30 years, revenue spent per student in the public schools in WI has increased 100%, yet we continue to churn out dolts.

My wife taught for 18 years. I have a sister who teaches, neices' who teach, a cousin who does too. There are many good teachers, some great ones. Like Hoot said, the problem is with the ones who want the good salaries for a minimum amount of effort. Back in the old days, teachers worked into their 70's and had authority in their classrooms. Today, they have chaos all around them (you can thank the admin and some parents for that) and they get to retire at 55. Most gov't workers retire much sooner than the average private sector careers and that, my friend, stirs resentment!

I've seen admin buildings that were flat out amazing, and amazingly over staffed while schools and class rooms looked like crap. Admin floors of beautiful granite while dirty peeling lino sits under students feet.

And I've seen teachers make $70,000 a year in small town Northern California sitting on special boards and committees, only showing up in class rooms 3/5 of the time. And then complain about how they are aren't paid enough.

Break down how much a 40K a year teacher makes by the hour, and you'll find it's not to bad. 40K = 22.22 p/h + benefits. Thats: 40000/(180 school days + 20 in-service at most)/9 hrs/perday = 22.22. 70K = 38.88 p/h + benefits.

Based on MY personal experiences, and perhaps mine only; I have zero sympathy for teachers in-terms of how much they are paid.

More money is NOT the answer IMO. More accountability is.
