My XB1200 won't shift past second gear. First, second and neutral are operable. Could this be anything simple that doesn't require splitting the case? If it does, what else should I replace while I'm in there...pistons and rings? crank bearings? Cost? |

Probably something as simple as a bent shift fork. If you've been popping out of gear lately, then you'll know. |

how does the shift fork get bent in the first place? seems to be a pretty hefty part.... |

Gets thinner as it wears, then bends with the force required to make a gear change. |

Questions. Mileage? Last trans oil change? when? were there any metallic particles bits in the oil? What oil? Anything unusual happen as a precursor? Doesn't sound like a broken or bent fork to me, more of a selector mechanism problem. There's 3 forks in the box on two shafts, the 1st/2nd fork on one & on the opposite the 3rd/5th fork & another for 4th. I've got a firebolt repair manual in pdf, if you want it pm me. You'll need an e-mail account that accepts large files gmail is favourite. |
